Stewart Copeland's Snare Drum * Of Mysterious Provenance & The Tama SC145 Snare Drum

This early/mid 70's chromed brass Pearl 5.5x14 snare drum (I think it was officially Pearl model 6356 and/or 4214) is the exact model drum on which Tama based the "Tama SC145" Stewart Copeland signature snare drum.
In Tama's original literature from when the Copeland Signature snare drum came out-it's got to be at least 10 years ago now I believe- it was described as based on the design of Copeland's favorite snare drum: a 'no name snare drum with mysterious provenance'. Well, here is one for you to see, as Copeland confirmed in one of his earliest Sacred Grove videos.
Really fast, I must now confess that I'm one of those rat bastards that helped accidentally piss off vintage Pearl drum collectors over the years by erroneously referring to this model as a JUPITER (which was I think model 4914DC and offered in both 5.5x14 & 6.5x14).
They're very nice heavy cob shelled drums. And indeed the Copeland signature Tama SC145 is a great drum (that one is in fact 5x14 not 5.5x14. I have owned one at one time. I in fact prefer the sound of the Copeland Tama SC145 to these Pearl models, btw. If you're looking for one: follow my advice contained in this video to spot one!
****And be careful! There are some 3 liners that are older, and then some newer than this exact model that have different '3 lines'. The '3 lines' have to look EXACTLY like the 3 lines depicted on the drum here. Send me pics of the one you're considering buying to my bonzoleum at gmail addy and I'll help you out (I will not buy it out from under you-I'm not a rat!).

"All these years I've spent trying to get that Stewart Copeland snare drum sound or that Stewart Copeland hi-hat sound," said Primus' Les Claypool, who began jamming with him in 2000, "and he sat down at this [drum kit] that was laying around with old heads on it... And all of a sudden there was that Stewart Copeland snare drum sound. It made me realize it's all about how he attacks his drums, how he plays."

I restored one of these COB Pearl snare drums for someone not long ago. They didn't even know what it was. I was honest and told them how much it was worth. It was in terrible shape and looked like crap. Completely disassembled it and restored it to brand new again. It sounded great. Great vid mate 👍

Stewart Copeland made the majority of The Police recording using the Pearl Custom model fitted with a die cast hoop. Logically, as he endorsed Tama, live he would be seen using a Tama snare drum. In the studio, endorsees tend to use what sounds best, not always what they endorse.

This was unexpected fun. I'd love to watch a 10 minute analysis about my favorite snare drum: Fibes 6x14 Chrome over Fiberglass. I also owned and loved the PINK clear...but there was nothing like the/my Fibes Chrome. I don't remember what the stock batter side rim was but I always changed my batter-side rims to die-cast. And Buddy Rich agreed.

Terry, great video. I own the Tama SC145 snare. Love it, glad it’s made in Japan as I heard some of those signature Tamas are made in China, don’t know if that’s true or not. Guess what I just got today...Paiste The Rhymatist Blue Bell 22” Ride! Just came in the mail this afternoon from Cascio Interstate in Milwaukee. It’s great, not as dry as I thought, but I’m new to drums. If you want me to drive it over to your studio so you can record a video on it, my pleasure. It’s pretty cool. Gorgeous as hell. Lemme know. Some guy advertised a COB Pearl snare in my local area. I'll be honest I didn't know much about it, it was only $135. Turns out after I bought it and shared on the group I realized it was a real Jupiter with parallel system. I didn't know the difference between the COB snares, thought they were all the same. Drum is in amazing shape, unforntunately the snare wires are all messed up and no real replacement exists anymore. I saw rDavid video on a modification but I want to keep it original.

Great video. You say nobody was making Chrome over brass in the 70's but rogers and pearl? Ludwig was making the COB supraphonic 60' and 70's . 70's had that blue and olive badge. The pearl that Copeland played is a "Classic Deluxe" model. Jupiter is different. They list them side by side in the old catalogs. Jupiter has way different throw off.

Terry, thanks for this video. I've got the 6.5" in COB (with the parallel strainer and in almost pristine condition considering its age) and the 5" in steel, and have sworn by these for years even before they became quasi popular again. The 6.5" COB has die cast hoops, and I love it. Total workhorse snare, but it does weigh a freaking ton.

It's in good hands now with a friend. A blucro can be made. Find a less expensive 6.5x14 Supra or Blacro (or resissue Acro) and give it a goos light sparkly blue spray painting! The slight muffling of the shell tones it up a bit. *If you ever see a 6.5x14 Acrolite with it's factory 'black galaxy' finish, buy it. It's an incredible drum (as are the 5x14).

I bought a 5X14 Black Galaxy off Guitar Center for 89 shipped and yes it is a great drum. Wide tuning range. I took the sound control out as it was rattling something fierce. What kills me is the wild price differences for these drums. I have seen them as low as 50 and as high as 350. Crazy.

I have just taken delivery from an ebay win of a 6 1/2 Custom brass drum....and after doing a scratch test, it too has an alloy shell. It has the 3 beads, so again, I stress, these drums are not always brass. A magnet test by the seller did not alert him to fact that it might have an alloy shell, just ruled out steel. My comments are there to add a little more info to your already very informative video and are not meant in any demeaning way. With a Jupiter or Custom it's always Caveat Emptor - Buyer beware.
@bonzoleum
@bonzoleum 5 лет назад
Howard- I was typing this "Thank you sir. Part of the thing that throws people off is that with the more popular Ludwig 'Brass vs. NotBrass', the magnet test isn't appropriate as the choices are brass and aluminum, but with the Pearl, the shells are either brass or steel-therefore the magnet test is valid..." And then it dawned on me-are you saying that you have a Pearl 3 liner that to which a magnet doesn't stick, but after scratching down, shows no goldish color? That you think isn't brass?
@howardevans6302
@howardevans6302 5 лет назад
@@bonzoleum Yes, the drum has the 3 bead shell and like a Jupiter drum I own, when you file the inside of the bearing edge fold, or scrape inside any drilled hole, all you see is bright 'silver' aluminium alloy, no 'gold' brass shining through. I could tell by the weight , even taking into regard the weight of the hardware. Also, an alloy shell has a dull tick where the brass still retains a ring, when struck. Of course stripped of all hardware, the weight is unmistakable The seam is also a clue, brass would be brazed, and the steel or alloy shells are welded.. It's a similar conundrum to all those first re-issue Ludwig Black Beauty drums made with seamless brass shells, but in reality were bronze shelled. Under plating, nobody knows what metal lurks ha ha. Again, you really have to check and re-check to be positive about the shell material used on these drums. Even lack of pitting doesn't say it must be brass, as alloy would pit. Pearl's chrome plating was pretty high quality back in the 1970s. Neither this 'new' drum or my older Jupiter have any shell problems, yet the lugs on both have chrome cancer - that gritting that shows under the chrome, but never actually pits. That must simply because of the different metal used to cast lugs.
@bonzoleum
@bonzoleum 5 лет назад
Wow-thanks Howard-that's the very first I've ever heard of a Pearl three liner that wasn't either brass or ferrous! You should make a video for the die hard Pearl folks!!
