They might as well have been brothers who were born one right after the other....so close in age that they almost develop and mature at the same time but not quite...sometimes the older one is constantly needling the younger one about just figuring out how to do something they’ve know about for a whole 6 months. Other times the younger one hits a growth spurt and surpasses the older and has the ability to start world war 3 by just ever so slightly smirking while the older brother struggles with whatever the younger one has gotten down....never ever ever sharing any space any toy any praise...always fighting when at home and putting the other down or showing each other up...but without even thinking about it, they unite as a whole so much greater than the sum of its parts when ever faced with some external challenge or test that reflects on them both. You see it happen in sports, academics, work, art, music etc etc....two equally matched siblings, growing up together, who are both the fiercest of rivals and the most natural of partners. Never able to support each other in practice as everything in that space becomes a competition and yet, in spite of this, they come together as team effortlessly when it’s time for them to perform together. It’s beautiful and horrible and often produces some of the most amazing music, athletic accomplishments, etc...
Ok...i just ran throughh the quarter notes with my band as he suggested. Now i just have to sit back and wait for the cash and women to start pouring in 🙃
Makes me chuckle when he says ‘rather’. That’s his London living coming through. One of my favourite drummers ever along with The Police being one of my favourite bands.
One of very few rock drummers whose sound is so original, so distinctive, you can recognize his playing immediately. Great drummer! Awesome chops. Lots of power too! Love his work with The Police.
Stewart is the best drummer ever. Not some dude that yells 'Solo!' every other minute. He plays very sophisticated and is a top-percussionist. And Tama is, by far, THE drumspecialist.
@@kai326 - I'd say more like "Cocky" . Going way back to his beginnings. Just ask Sting about it. I would NEVER use the word "Humble" to describe Stewart Copeland. Its almost laughable.
What does he mean? Does he mean to for example hit the snare on one and three instead of two and four for a few bars and then go back to 2 and four again?????
I own the Copeland official TAMA set (last one made) midnight blue, Zolacoat , octobans , one skin and the MASSIVELY HEAVY snare chrome-over-brass - special ordered from Sam Ash General Manager) toTama. Its been years since I have even seen the drums. recently we had a massive flood in NYC (6 feet of water) and the drums were floating in the garage to their amazing credit NOTHING was warped, in fact they dried by themselves maintaining their original tuning. All the hardware shinny and rust free. These babies will be worth a TON of cash one day. I paid over $2,000 37 years ago.
Stewart Copeland's music is so creative and captivating. He composed the music for a video game series in the late '90s to early 2000s. The tunes are nothing far from perfection and creativity. Hearing the music (especially the first game of the series), you can clearly hear the percussion in each tune; the percussion is clearly the star. Stewart Copeland's personality is so fun and he's so easy-going. He's so fun to listen to. If you want to hear the music, it is from the original "Spyro the Dragon" game(s) series -- "Sunny Flight" is mainly composed with percussion, just if you are interested in hearing more of his percussion. It is incredible that he created the songs with simple MIDI on a keyboard, but the percussion stands out so clearly and is so complex. He's a very talented man!
SM B - He also composed and performed the music for the Showtime original series "Dead Like Me". Unfortunately, the show only lasted one season. But it was a great show, and his music made it even better.
Stewart is up there with the likes of Bonham. No question. Instantly recognisable, totally original. Amazingly tuned drums, especially the snare. Thanks for getting me into drumming when I was a kid.
A friend had a Stewart Copeland sig series kit 5 piece in his garage, I remember playing it ALOT, with different musicians that came thru, my only comment ALWAYS was distinctly "these drums SING!"
Stewart's not just a drummer, but a superb musician, composer, song writer, and producer..That's what makes most drummers who meet him, shit their pants...
I was ten years old when Synchronicity came out. I liked it. I liked the hit songs by The Police like, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Don't Stand So Close To Me, De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da, King Of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger, and Every Breath You Take. But then a few years went by and I stopped listening to The Police. My freshman year in high school, my brother bought Outlandos D'Amour on cd and it completely renewed my interest in The Police, because by this time I had been playing drums for 3 years. I eventually collected all of their studio albums and I have to say that my favorite album by The Police is Regatta de Blanc. When I was 16 I played that cassette in my car over and over again, absorbing every groove, fill, spash cymbal, rim click, everything. Songs like Contact, Does Everyone Stare, No Time This Time, Bring On The Night, Deathwish, Walking On The Moon, etc. That album gives you a lot to think about, from a drummer's perspective. Thank you Stewart for playing one note to the left of the music, or whatever it was you said.
Like Ringo and Charley, Stewart has the FEEL ! Nobody loves Virgil or Simon or Gavin more than myself but Stewarts sound is like no other! Peace from Detroit MI.
Stewart, Sting, and Andy were all destined for greatness, all born with God-given talent, creativity, opportunity, and musical inclination I remember Eddie Van Halen talking about creativity and ideas.. he said they were simply given to him from an unknown energy as he pointed his hands into nothingness, RIP EVH There is definitely some higher power or cosmic energy creating greatness in a variety of areas of life, some people are just put on Earth to do incredible things
@@SXI96 Could be, I've heard great musicians, in subway waiting areas, street musicians, random clubs, some these people are truly gifted, but have not cross over to stardom/celebrity status, never hooked up, maybe tomorrow or the next day is the hope, that keeps them jamming away, and/or it's the love of music itself, who cares about the money or fame....
Saw the Synchronicity Tour in Dallas in '83. Just blown away! Stewart's hi-hat work is reminiscent of a rock-n-roll Max Roach. Great nuances and detail. Impeccable musician, as are his mates in The Police.
With the Thompson Twins and The Fixx? I saw it in Tacoma, WA. I sat behind the stage (there was a PA system back there) so I could watch Stewart easier.
I joined a joy division /David Bowie style band as a kid. I hadnt heard indie but I loved copelands/Jimmy chamberlin sound so played that way. The band used to detune my snare tape up my Tom's. On refection it was an interesting fusion of sounds when it high pitched
Make me an offer and you CAN own one of two made officially being Copeland's set. (1 of 2) Bids start at $15,000 Seriously I have not kept up with drum technology but from what I see not even TAMA has been able to reproduce the Copeland set. The little stuff (tom rack, quick mounts, Bass drum spurs) were jewels. The cymbal stands with the counterweight was a first and they ARE heavy (were?) My set seemed it was designed by NASA. GOOOOO TAMA . I did see recently a set of LUDWIG and was VERY impresed , still they do not project like a 37 year old TAMA.
As a brotha whose parents moved him to the suburbs back in the 70's... I was looking for a rock drummer who could supply some funk, some soul for me to relate to. Bonham gave me hope, Copeland closed the deal lol
I remember reading an article that his method of tuning a snare drum was basically to tighten the lugs is tight as he possibly could. When he couldn't get them any tighter, that was it.
adam872 Yeah. Tama's are great. I've had my reissue Imperialstar (their beginner series) kit for awhile now and they play and sound better than most other drum kits. Hopefully I will have enough mula to buy a nice Starclassic Maple kit like Stew here.
The short stack hyperdrive kits are SO GOOD! BRING THEM BACK!!! I have been calmly waiting for a newer series of them to release. Until then I will keep playing my Saturn kit.
The father of my son, a drummer, had a very brief reply to me telling him I loved the drums on "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic". That was, "Aaaw! That's just a bunch of hi-hats." Jealous much? Ha, ha!
I very much enjoy listening to the intellectual prowess of SC! Also, as a mentor to many aspiring Day Traders, I know that musical prowess and gamer skills give an edge to those with them in our exciting Day Trading world. Stuart, though you may not have interest (or maybe you would), I speculate you could be and would be an extremely skillful and successful "Volatility Hunter" in our Day Trading World. May you always be able to do what you love.
My first Tama kit was a 6pc imperialstar with concert Tom's in a blue metallic wrap in 79, wish I didn't sell them but next kit was a 5pc superstar in mahogany. Great drums always sounded great.
I do not know if Copeland should be ranked among the world's greatest drummers - of course he's successful, phenomenally so - but godDAMN, I sure do love listening to his playing, probably more than any other drummer.
+Aryno Wyrth There is no such thing as "the greatest", it's all about taste, and of different styles and idioms. Sure, I appreciate Copeland's elegant style, but he's just one out of perhaps fifty different drummers that I enjoy listening to ( myself included :-)
No Stewart, it wasn't luck. It was a lot of hard work, dedication, persistence, and raw physical talent that turned you into a music icon. The only "lucky" part was that we - the ones who grew up with your music, were "lucky" enough to witness and support your artistic expression by buying your recordings and showing up at your live performances.
Let's be honest, a ton of it was luck and destiny, there are SO many pieces of a puzzle that need to fit together to achieve this level of greatness.. Stewart worked his butt off like so many musicians do, but the rest was luck or fate
Although I'm a Ringo , Charlie Watts type of player , I bought my Tama Artstar 2 kit 30 years ago just on the strength of Stewarts drumming .The kit is still going strong , but I have faded away because I played in the middle .You can get a machine to do that .
HEY I own the last one ever made!!!!!!!! A favor from TAMA to an executive of Sam Ash (The wonderful Howie Mendelson) THAT set went through a flood and floated in my garage for 3 days . After dry.. NOTHING was rusted, the ZOLA coat was VERY clean and the hardware just needed some lubrication, BTW THAT SNAKE is a work of ART! Price for the kit in 1983 $1,275!
I wish TAMA Drums Official would re-upload this video at a higher resolution -- I doubt they recorded this with a 144p cell phone camera -- and with a bit more footage, or all of the footage from this shoot. Come on, TAMA!
