What a genuine bloke, different to the old school lads who were mainly there for just a piss up and a laugh, no wonder he had a great career compared to other players round his ability.
I used to run a very cool bar in Boro called Frescos. Played dance and funky house, Stewy was in regular. Knocks about with his old school mates and stuff, real down to earth lad. Even in his peak, was never a big time Charlie! Always gave tips and what a legend. Thanks for your top after the 2 all draw versus the Geordies Stewy, great times at Frescos.
Met Downing some years back at Flamingo Land, I went up to him and quietly asked if my son could have a picture taken with him as he was a fan of his. He was with his family as well so I would have actually respected him even if he said no, but he was reyt polite and said yes. I think he respected the fact that I wasn’t loud n leary as he was acting all low key with him being with his family. He was a big name back then and would have probably been hounded.
IKR! Fucking hell. People RIP McClaren to PIECES nowadays I've ALWAYS liked the man personally. EVERYONE says he was GREAT on the COACHING side. That's NEVER been doubted. I remember how BIG his rep was at Man Utd when he was under Fergie and when he came I was like YES! Bit of NEW SCHOOL progressive shit not OLD SCHOOL Robson who bought old players and basically revved em up and told them to just go out and play. Not exactly a master tactician. He gave us some of the BEST times ever though did Robson so I'll ALWAYS love the man. So did Macca though like Downing mentions here the UEFA cup run was MENTAL. Coming from behind and winning in the last minutes it was a FAIRY TAIL run and fair play we came up against THE UEFA Cup/Euro leagues BEST TEAM EVER Seville that's THEIR competition. They BOSS that.
@@mattdevereux5940 For one, we never gave him endless stick .. we actually give him all the support he needed as we were proud to have a Boro lad playing in our team and for England. It was his second stint that was disappointing .. holding the club to ransom over a contract clause and that stopped us from playing him, he wasnt good enough during his second spell .. that's what spoiled his rep with the Boro fans.
Me and my mate had similar experience to the first team steam and jacuzzi incident when on trial at Boro but with a completely different outcome. Instead of Ince telling us to f off, Viv Anderson greeted us fully starkers and had a proper conversation with us asking all sorts of questions. A naked Viv Anderson was a humbling experience in itself 😆
Not a Boro fan, but I remember that period in the early to mid 00's when they had a lot of high profile players. Karembeu, Boksic, Mendieta, Zenden, Ince, Juninho, Viduka, Hasselbaink, Boateng, Reizeger, Southgate, Woodgate, Mills. Back then there wasn't anywhere near the wealth in the PL as there is now, so makes me wonder how Boro were able to pay those sorts of wages.
They had a very wealthy chairman .. fair play to him he put huge money into Boro and had a good go .. felt a bit sorry for him he deserved to win something
I love Gazza and all his stories are great, but there all over RU-vid as he’s been interviewed that much. Still great stories but not as funny when you’re prepared for the punch line.
Great podcast 🙌🏼 got a bit irritating when everyone was cutting him off, talking over him & interrupting a few times when he tried to tell a story. Some player, doesn’t get the credit he deserves. A local lad, first team starter within the team we had 🔥 cant fall off ⚽️
@@whodoyouratemore yea does seem a little crowded doesn’t it. Was a good laugh i really enjoyed it. Watching the danny mills one at mo. Just on the this one the interruptions killed a few stories stone dead haha
Yeh it was a bit irritating and mostly cutting him off because they thought of a joke and wanted to get it out to make THEM look funny. It's ALL about the guest NOT the host. Come on lads thats interviewing/podcasting rule number ONE.
Cool. What a career. I know brownie and parky take the piss out of their careers but, this show has shown how hard it is to even get on the field in league 2. Respect ✊
Tuncay is SUCH A LEGEND for me! SOOO underrated. He was MINT! I LOVED him. One of those players that you can't NOT like. I think Boro fans forgot about him WAY to quickly IMO.
Go onto Middlesbrough fc own RU-vid channel, he has a video dedicated don’t get me wrong I think the youth of today don’t even remember him but I was 16 at the time and he’s well remembered by my generation
I was there at Portsmouth and remember drooling over Downing young Milner and petrov all in the Midfield. We won 4-2 and Downing scored a diving header for the 3rd goal.
People forget without downing we wouldn’t have got to the Uefa Cup Final. Wonder how many scoring opportunities he created, how many assists he got in that competition. Bet its a high rate
In 2005/06 Stewart Downing was the best winger in the country (including Ronaldo) In that Season he was unreal, he got Boro all the way to the europa league final and played class in the Premier league and was on the short list for Barcelona, Chelsea, Man United etc but the 06/07 it was down hill. He was still good but he was like a different player after that 05/06 season.
Can SOMEONE ANYONE who MAY know about this confirm/deny this story I heard YEARS ago from one of the Boro "Ultras" who supposedly heard it from a first team coach he knew. There was a game and Downing was announced "injured" but apparently there was a hushed up drugs thing. Supposedly on one of his FREQUENT nights out as he mentions here, he took ecxstacy and got found out by the club. I've always wondered how true that is. Not something someone like him would ever come out and tell I guess anyways. But I remember my mate being ADIMANT it was true. This was when he was a young lad still at Boro NOT after he came back before he first moved.
I can’t say for certain but according to people who know him very well, all of those rumours were massively exaggerated or completely made up. Downing barely touched the drink on nights out. Even as a kid he was disciplined in that way. The rumours would come out because some of the people around him would do things like that or had reputations and because people would see them with him, they would assume he was doing it too.
@@stevenprofitt Fair point. BUT what about this scenario? On a night out with the boys people are doing E and he TRIED it? like stupidly or even got spiked? Something happened that he got found out by the club OR he said like listen i was spiked lets keep this thing hushed up and they said he was injured for the next match. They way it just came out and was told to me, it just seems like one of those things no smoke without fire. It just came out of the blue. It was a ONE OFF thing.
@@rooneye I’m not saying it didn’t happen, but I doubt he was out in a club a few days before a match and as far as I know, MDMA is only detectable in your system for a few days.
Did he say was it was because randy learner was American he didn't understand football ? He understands sports injuries because they do play sports in America and he understands finances hence why he's a rich businessman ...What a stupid thing to say .
FSG were new to football and let Dalglish and Comoli sign players. They signed shite like Charlie Adam and Andy Carroll. Downing was another but he’ll admit he could have done better. Henderson was the best signing made.
Yeah agree with ya, seems a decent bloke but the bald guy is annoying...always looking for some laugh which more often than not is not funny. Laughing at your own jokes regularly too is painful to listen too
A complete & utter disgrace the way he treated us after how we stood by him for 6 months while he was injured. No problem with him moving to Liverpool but the way he went about it was so disrespectful, & holding up a Liverpool scarf with Andy Carrol saying welcome to Liverpool while still playing for us………glad his career nose dived & beating his Middlesbrough in the playoffs was so sweet seeing his face that night at villa park. 🖕🏻
He was injured playing against villa, done brilliant for you and deserved his move, managed to be player of the year for West ham and for Boro after he left liverpool
