I've used Stew Mac and liked them. But I've also used some for $10 for 3 on amazon and work great as well. Either way, if it works it works!

please, which ones did you get on amazon? there are many but not all of them have good reviews, they say some are not inclined at all. Which inclination did you use: 1°, 0.5° or 0.25°? thank you very much if you want to help me!

I just got a jaguar classic vibe and I'm gonna put a 1 degree in cuz I love really low action. I'll see how it does. if it's to low then I'll take 2 minutes and swich to .75.

Get the StewMac shim. I made my own and it was an absolute pain in the butt. Solid neck to body coupling is important to tone and sustain and those tiny shims won't cut it.

The Stew Mac shims are definitely worth it. Makes a proper neck shimming much easier with the knowledge that you have a perfectly angled shim. I went with a full 1 degree for my Jazzmaster. I agree, they are not cheap but the issue I have with Stew Mac is their shipping costs. I paid $10.00 for shipping on the shim. I once paid over $6.00 shipping on a 49 cent item from Stew Mac. A bit ridiculous.

I recently built a body from scratch and installed a Bigsby. I need to angle the neck to get the proper setup. Have you ever heard of anyone sanding the neck pocket, rather than installing a shim? Thanks for any feedback!👍😎🎸🎶
@NathanSink
@NathanSink 5 лет назад
74dart man I haven't heard much about that, but it seems like a valid option. I would imagine it would be tricky to get an even taper across the entire pocket.

@@NathanSink yep...that's what I was concerned about. I thought about experimenting and taking off a little at a time. Not sure yet. I may go with a shim. Everything turned out real nice so far, except for angling the neck, so I don't want to mess up now. Thanks for your response...appreciate it!👍😎🎸🎶

@Ben-yy7io

@@NathanSink The only things I would recomend spending more on is the output jack and switches. You can get away with cheaping out on tone caps and pots so long as they are within +/-10% of the suggested value. Don't fall for spending more for fancy capcitors, they don't affect your tone, only the value chosen does. Cloth wire looks nice but isn't really necesary. Put a shim in my neck and it stopped the big bends from choking out . I have no issues with the stock pickups . Used a piece of cardboard to shim the neck and it didn’t reduce sustain at all , but then again jazzmasters have almost no sustain

I use Stewmac shims myself when I need a shim even though I know how to make them. The thing is not that they are difficult to make but that they are quite time consuming to make. I would personally rather spend the $8 to $10 for a Stewmac shim than to spend an hour or so making one. Not only because an hour of my time is worth more than $10 but because I would rather spend that hour doing something else.

Absolutely a small shim at the back of the neck pocket WILL ramp the neck up on the upper frets and it will fret out , it may not right away but it will over time , and if left in for a long period will retain that shape ... not good. I would go back to this "luthier" and get your money back he almost ruined your neck!. Congrats for doing the right thing ! and finally someone NOT putting little pieces of cardboard tape and other crap in their neck pocket and posting their videos telling people to do this and screw up their guitars . Thumbs UP!!

Fender make neck shims in the same way as your luther. Their factory shims for Jaguars are just a thin piece of plastic made from leftover pickup bezel.

Those StewMac shims are very fragile. They crack after installed (can't support screw tension, and screws weren't overtight), you gotta handle them very carefully. They work well in terms of size, but I was expecting more for what they cost and their advertised "strong" hard maple.
