GunsForSale.com presents a behind-the-scenes look at how firearm manufacturer Steyr-Mannlicher makes their barrels.
Steyr, Austria is the home of hammer forging, and firearm manufacturer Steyr-Mannlicher has been hammer forging barrels longer than any other company.
We visited their factory to see how and why they manufacture their barrels differently than other companies.

Fascinating. It's nice to see modern mass production techniques and hand craftsmanship together.

Thanks, I now feel at ease with the purchase I made yesterday of a Pro Hunter in .223. I picked it from a fairly good range of firearms available in New Zealand. It will mostly do range work. All the reviews for the most part highly acclaim the Pro Hunter and all Steyr rifles. It will be my second Steyr.

I own a vintage SL in .222 Remington that I bought second hand. It still looks brand new and is an absolutely beautiful Rifle for being 46 years old! Nothing else even compares or comes close to being as remotely accurate as my SL! I love my Steyr Mannlicher SL, if you're lucky enough to own one than you know exactly what I'm talking about!

My L9-A1 with it's 4.5 inch barrel is the deadliest accurate pistol I ever fired. I love those trapezoidal sights. Fit and finish is an A++.

Ah yes, there used to be some many koala bears and kangaroos in Steyr, Austria we had to built these amazing rifles to hunt them down and now they fled to Australia (don't ask me how).
@pieterveenders9793

You seriously don't know even how they got to Australia? It's pretty simple actually.... They got there by way of Austria's neighbour Sweden, known around the world for its chocolate, banksters, and stolen Jewish gold. Not to be confused with Switzerland, the Scandinavian country renowned for its meatballs, Abba, and cheap assemble-it-yourself furniture.

Quite a few of the hammer forging machines are built in Chesapeake, Virginia at GFM-USA. Those machines typically go to Remington, Mossberg, S&W, Colt, etc. The same machine built in Steyr, Austria would cost much more because of the euro.

Actually it is not only Steyr Mannlicher that uses our forging process, you will find it in Ruger, Winchester, Colt.... to just name a few.

I would still like to see even a simulation of how the lands are cut whilst the barrel is forged, I cant imagine the tool they use. All I can htink is similar to a broach that has to be shrunk to be removed somehow.
@pieterveenders9793
@pieterveenders9793 4 года назад
That's the thing, the lands aren't cut, they're forged. Broaching is also a method based on removal of material by cutting. If anything the closest you could compare it to is button rifling, both button rifling and hammer forging use a carbide negative inside of the barrel and enormous forces to compress the steel on the inside of the barrel to take on the correct shape/form (i.e. the rifling). But the big difference between the two methods is that button rifling uses a carbide "plug" which is only 1/10 the length of the eventual barrel, while hammer forging uses a carbide mandrel which is the full length of the eventual barrel. And with button rifling that rifling button is pulled through the drilled barrel blank with a force of several tons to form the rifling, while with hammer forging several rotary hammers around the circumference of the barrel blank use many tens or even several hundreds of tons of force to forge the barrel.

I used too like steyr but they made defective pistol barrels that bulge after a little while. I bought a brand new one and the barrel bulged after a few shots. I sent pistol in they told me it was a squid which was false because they sent it back with a used 3.6 inch barrel because they had no knew ones but he said they were redesigned to be better so they did have issues they were going to charge me for the new barrel when and if it came in. Well it never came in. And the used one they sent me started doing the same thing. So I sold it. Bad customer service. And not dependable as it should and they come unrefined some beat up a little. I was lucky when they first came out like 2 gen they were good bought 2 a 9mm and a 40mm. They were good guns. But I will tell you about a great gun with a great warranty and service it's Smith&Wesson M&P 2.0. These are great guns hands down better. The steyr pistols are not worth what want for them just like glock. M&P are better

American companies don't produce hammer forging machines for small arms, as of now, because of the arrangement with GFM. Those factories were partially defense subsidized by the US Government, with the stipulation that the machines be manufactured in the USA. Had this agreement not taken place... General Dynamics, Miller Tool and Die, Honeywell, or Dayton would be making forging machines like they did during the 1960s. We don't make junk here, Austria is just a convenient supplier.
@ryantripp4728
@ryantripp4728 6 лет назад
Lex5576 that is completely incorrect.... I built machines “small arms” gun barrel forging machines... my father is also an electrical engineer there and has been there for thirty five years

Hammer forging didn't originate in Steyr. It originated in Germany during WW2, then after the war it was picked up in Steyr.
@BirdRaiserE
@BirdRaiserE 8 лет назад
This guy is correct. The germans looked into a better method of barrel making for the express purpose of improving their MG42's. Before hammer forging, the MG simply went through barrels at an unacceptable rate.
