Find out what happens when the ultimate 4x4 noob drives one of the most potent 4WD's in the World. Also: Land Rovers mucking about and an awkward recovery! Warning: Contains nuts!
I sold my good old Disco V8, so I could buy this rare Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer 710K! Here it is for you to enjoy, among other off-road madness. Despite this Pinz being extremely capable, I am not so much yet. So I had to get recovered from a bog, in reverse, with only one rear view mirror and no means of communication. It was epic. I drove home that same day, even though the gearbox was full of water. This thing is indestructible, and I still need to learn how to use it properly...

Right on, my friend! Glad to know there is some form of interest. Your Pinz looks brand new, it's beautiful! Hopefully I will be able to restore mine to such a nice state. I would like to take the body off, weld the damages areas, have it blasted and resprayed in the original colour. That would make an awesome video series. Anyway, I have over 80Gb of footage to edit about rebuilding the carburetters, ignition, changing fluids, adjusting valves, gear shift linkage, refurbishing the brakes, etc etc... I hope to find the time to edit all of this soon. Thank you so much for watching, and feel free to share. Kindest regards, Geoffrey.

Nice one, Bob! Mine is a '73. Thank you for your kind words. I will be rolling out some more content this year, most definitely. This is such a super-duper vehicle, a bit like the ultimate 4x4 unicorn, that I am so glad to be able to share it with the world. Very little content is out there about it, and if there is it is either highly pixelated or in Russian. :-) Thanks for subscribing if you just did. I am mechanically inclined, so lots of various content is on the way, Pinzgauer included. I run this channel as a hobby, a full time job takes up most of my time. I can't afford to post every week like those billionaire big-timers out there, so thank you for your patience. Kind regards! Geoffrey

@@gmcevoy I've been interested in this amazing vehicle for awhile. Was concerned living in the states with maintaining it. As you mentioned there's so little usable content out there on it. I finally found a good 710k with a source for spare parts. Got the confidence to buy it. Hope to have mine the end of the month. Trying to gather as much information as possible. Came across your channel. Your content has provided the most helpful information. Our vehicles are 40+ years old but incredibly capable. The engineering & hardware is so solid on this machine. I'm expecting to need to do basic maintenance & upgrades. Want to keep it as original as possible but do the upgrades like the switch to electronic ignition. My father was a mechanic & passed that interest & knowledge to me. Do most of my own vehicle maintenance but must admit not sure what I'm getting into with the Pinz. Guess I'll learn. Still extremely excited to own & enjoy this incredible vehicle. Thanks for posting & your help! Subscribed & looking forward to more! Yeah, totally with you on real world work life balance. Glad to get any information. Best wishes.....Bob

@@bobv7753 Thank you Bob. Much appreciated. I suppose all depends the state your forthcoming Pinz is in right now. I almost bought a restoration project (thankfully I didn't), and in the nick of time stumbled across this gem I have now. I hate the colour, and I would love to be able to take the shell off, strip it down, weld what needs welding and paint it in its original colour (RAL6014 I believe). I am busy saving up in order to rebuild the front portals and brakes. If I can afford it, a fresh set of tyres would be nice. I hope to be able to keep this engineering marvel for as long as I live, so I am not in a hurry really. I am concerned that it sleeps outside, as it doesn't fit in the garage. I must find an indoor space for rent... Keep in touch, Bob, do let me know when your Pinzgauer comes through! All the best, Geoffrey

Well that's different, what a fantastic looking vehical i knew when the video started that you had gotten stuck from all the mud on your jeans lol but dont be hard on yourself that water was deeper than it looked and deeply rutted to. That tank like hatch was a good escape route not sure if there was even room to open the doors
@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy 3 года назад
It was so deep that it sort of floated for a couple of seconds, before sinking. There was a sort of step in the bog, and the ground just went under me... Beginner's mistake, I should have walked and tested the depth beforehand. Lesson learned. If it weren't for the hatch, I would still be sitting there, as it was impossible to open the doors. I think it stalled because the electronic ignition module which I installed got drenched immediately. I have since then relocated it inside the cabin, high up. It should hopefully never happen again. This being said, I was sure I had killed it forever, but nay. I drove it home, after a bit of careful wrenching. Thank you for your heart-warming comment Darren, it is always something that I look forward to.

Very classy vehicle, when you described the drive line. It sounded suspiciously like a TRX 4, F/R locking diffs ect. I like the pay to play area and great driving my friend getting that beast around wasn't easy no doubt. Side note ( lovely👂 defenders )

@gmcevoy 2 года назад
Yes indeed! Haha. Even if it is the best 4x4 in the world, it is worth nothing if you can't use it properly! Hahaha. I had to remove the spark plugs to drain the water out of the engine. Once that was done, I drove it home the same day. This thing is invincible, even in the hands of an idiot! Lol 😆

What an incredible series! I am currently looking for a 712 :-) ... so if you're looking for content, maybe address some of the service differences between 4x4 and 6x6? :-)

@gmcevoy 2 года назад
Thank you! I would love to do a comparison! As soon as I get acquainted with a 712 owner not too far away, I will definitely look into doing just that. Putting them side by side, and testing out on the tracks of course. I am convinced the 710 would outperform the 712 in most cases, but I could be wrong. Wait and see? :-) Best of luck with your research, and do please get back to me with the good news when you have found one! All the best, Geoffrey
@MrMaikeul

@@gmcevoy amazing! Why would you think the 710 would outperfom the 712? a wheelbase vs weight angle? :-)
@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy 2 года назад
@@MrMaikeul the shorter wheelbase is definitely an advantage, weight as well. However, the 712 has a bigger footprint, so theoretically would have the advantage on loose terrain such as sand. I hope to be able to compare both some day.

Awesome? I so badly want to get a 710 expedition! I'm not sure if the box can be removed so you have a truck. Like a truck camper.. go camping jack up the box on the back and still have a truck to drive.
@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy Год назад
Hi Dan! The roof is bolted on, so it can be removed but as a whole. You would be left with the windscreen and side-screens, which are bolted to the doors an can be removed as well. You could fabricate a cabin if you have the skills, and have an awesomely unique flatbed Pinzgauer!
@pinzgauernorcal
@pinzgauernorcal 3 года назад
you should inspect all the gear oils after you submerge them like that the water gets inside just change all 8 gearboxed should be fine
@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy 3 года назад
I checked it all as a matter of course. Only the gearbox was contaminated, so I replaced the oil and made a custom breather pipe. I also relocated the electronic ignition module (Pinz SSi) inside the cabin, so it should never stall again when so dramatically drenched. I hope to never put myself in such a situation again, mind you.

@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy 3 года назад
@@pinzgauernorcal Thank you for your much needed wise words. I am still amazed that I drove it home that very same day. I had to pull the spark plugs out because some of the cylinders were full of water, and drying the electronic ignition module gave a good spark again. Cranked it up and it fired immediately, spewing water out of the exhaust. These things will outlive us all. Since then, the starter motor engagement mechanism has seized so I am busy rebuilding it. Waiting for parts to finish it up. I still have to remove the brake drums to give them a clean and adjust while I am at it. I have noticed a drag in the rear left a while ago. So most definitely more Pinz oriented content coming up. I am surprised at the following these peculiar vehicles get. They are like the 4x4 unicorn or something. I had a tough time finding this one, I suppose I might as well make a video explaining a little more about its story. Thanks again for stopping by, and for your kind words. Much appreciated. Speak soon I hope! Always nice to get acquainted with other Pinzgauer owners!
