Promotional video of the Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer made in the UK at the former Dennis factory in Guildford, Surrey, by Automotive Technik Ltd. Regrettably, BAE Systems bought ATL and decided to stop production of the Pinzgauer altogether.
On the old pinzes, what parts broke most often? (from your perspective as a welder?) They have kind of a reputation for rugged reliability, so you'd have to use them pretty hard to break stuff!
@@TristanMorrow only parts we used to make for spares were roof parts just where they were thin to keep weight down, other than that they were pritty bullet proof until we started makeing the armoured vision the "vector" adding 4 tonnes to the original running gear killed it
It was used by the Yugoslav People's Army and used throughout the Balkan wars, and it turned out very well. After the war you could buy it in good condition under 1000 euros.
None of these were used in Yugoslavia. Yugoslav People's Army had 2.5L petrol models from the 1970s. Any of them is prohibitively expensive to upkeep and maintain due to lack of spare parts.
6:15 great memories to my basic training in the swiss military as a Field medic. Whilst others where freezing in the cold. We could stay in the Pnzgauers wounded department which had a heating :-)))
Had a job where a guy took us for a ride in his 4x4 version(he was trying to sell them to the company). I wasn't expecting the steep climb/drop he went on and ended up sliding down the back side seats
Saya tidak memiliki kendaraan ini tapi saya respect dan hormat kepada seluruh org yang berkontribusi dengan kendaraan ini tetap merayap di planet ini...❤😊
Same with me only saw one in 30 years and it was parked at the local wallmart . The downside is the 6x6s get terrible milage evenon the diesel models .
One of the things few know is that the Pinz is hermetically dust sealed (the mechanical parts) so it turned out to be the ideal vehicle for underground mines, where others failed after a few weeks due to dust-induced mechanical wear of everything....
Why did they buy it if they were going to stop production? What are all those emergency services going to replace there fleet with? I like there 6x6 and their independent suspension system and the differential setup and the portal hubs. It seems to me they had the best ideas to make their vehicle unstoppable.
there was a guy a couple of streets over in my neighborhood that had the six-wheeled version with Colorado license plates - it would've made the most awesome Scout Troop vehicle
Hi dirty3 graffiti, a question for you. When you worked for ATL welding the pinzgauers did you ever get to drive any of the vehicles that you worked on.
@@harveysmith100 I Do realise that Harvey but why stop making them, they are a reliable vehicle and a good off-road vehicle, I'm sure farmers, and people who like off roading would buy them or convert into a small caravette as some people have done.
@@davidphillips8416 I agree David, I would love to see them being made again. Unfortunately the licence to manufacture them is owned by Bae Systems. They make defence equipment. In their world, as soon as the military didn't want them they stopped production. Personally I thing the Pinz is the best pure off roader ever built.
Pinzgauer is a highly accomplished off-road vehicle. Its capabilities, in some operational scenarios, are better than that of the Humvee and the Land Rover Defender. Serbian army is also using a large number of Pinzgauers. There are also data that Pinzgauer, also used by the armies of Austria, United Kingdom, Argentina ....The only problem of this vehicle, which is a large fuel consumer over 25 liters per 100km, depends on the driving conditions of the mind and over 25 liters to consume. But since it is mainly used for military purposes, this is not such a problem.
I have a 710K ... it gets way better fuel economy than that, even off road. Your 25 liters would take me more like 160km mixing on and off road. That is about as good as my Toyota 4runner mixing on and offroad.
agree with you but you forget something,in army you dont care for economy,in army you care about safety and off road capabilities, lets say that you are in the front line and you need to pick one of the 3,you pick the light and fast pinz or the slow and heavy armored humvee? ...i pick the one that have 4 inches thick bullet proof window
***** 718k Pinzgauer´s are very rare, even here in Europe. Only about 500 were ever made ;) so today the only one for sale in the hole world is this one here www.gebrauchtwagen.at/detailansicht.php?id_fahrzeug=5184269 price is ok for the good condition and its older then 25 years so you can import it to the USA ;)
+Max Maruszewski no, production is stopped entirely they are not very fuel efficient, yet reliable and sturdy luke barely any other truck trucks that can be compared to this type are the volvo 202 and 303, also the mercedes "unimog" is a modern truck that is in the same ligue
No. Not anymore. How very stupid: BAE buys the factory and rights to produce the vehicle and then decides that it does not make sense to do it. Welcome to the world of Big Corp.
Looks like the Pinzgauer is based on the Tatra 805, basically build with the same drivetrain design and offroad capabilities. Too bad they are not produced anymore.
why has it stopped is it not being built in austria ? surely it still has a market for civilian uses !.? its looks like the heathfield ,i think the name was but that was 6+4 !
bernard_hossmoto They are not solid portal axles. Pinzgauer has a special independent suspension design (both front and rear) with double coil spring suspension. It has a unique massive central tranamission tunnel which also serves as a part of the suspension. The entire transmission and suspension design was optimized for high speed driving on uneven terrain while having maximum ground clearance at the same time. These vehicles can travel so fast on uneven ground and still maintain good ground contact, that most typical all terrain passenger vehicles (for example Land Rover Defender) would lose control at such speeds and swerve off the desired trajectory. This ability is why the vehicle carries the name of a thoroughbred Austrian horse species.
bernard_hossmoto P.S. To amend my answer - they are portal axles, but not solid axles. They are portal halfaxles in a special independent suspension design.
Harvey Smith yes a 2.5 Td, would have been early to mid 90’s . Great vehicle when lightly loaded, we used the 4x4 for recon and FOB , the 6x6 was a light gun tractor but when laden was just under powered. To be honest it was a while back and I have no idea what engine is used now. Virtually unstoppable with all the diff locks engaged.
Thanks for the info. Production has stopped as far as my knowledge goes. British Aerospace (Bae') took over production but stopped a while back. Up until the end it was the same VWTd engine. I just didn't know the displacement. Sounds underpowered, yes, I have a 2.4 in a LandCruiser and that is underpowered! The Pinz is something special.
Yes it was build and produced by Styer-Puch as e.g. Puch/Mercedes G in Graz Austria but the main constructor was Czech who left ocupied czehoslovakia by sssr Mr. Ledwinka and he was son of another genius who disign Tatras before and after ww2 including a Tatra 97. This model was copied by F. Porsche to made a vw beattle. And btw name Styer Puch come from region styer and from founder name Puch and he was Slovenian
Great 4x4, 6x6 Vehicles maybe better then Unimog just!!??? definitely better then the Land Rovers or Jeeps, Volvo 4x4's nearly the same quality.. NICE !
Clive Sinclair unimog is way more powerful but top speed on the road is half that. Unimog is more offroad but pinz is everything else and it does compete with uni. so pinz in my opinion is better
Better in which regard? It's stupid to say something is better than another, when these are total different animals: Pinzgauers are very small, 710 just over 4 meters, very light, roughly 3 ton. Unimogs today are ALL over 7.5 to category -- so how to compare? A truck with 2.3 meters height to a truck with 3 meters? A truck with 235/85-16 to a truck with 20“ wheels like 12.5“??? A Mercedes G even in military category had a 2.8l cdi engine and lot of power, a Pinzgauer 710 had roughly 80 HP. If you need to go “fast“ a Pinz is not an option. So in which regard is it better now?
Runs circles around slow unimogs, and small enough to fit on tight forest trails. I can drive my pinz 710k faster offroad than most unimogs can go onroad.
I had a 712k with 4x4 Petrol engine designed for radio link. Then his factory price was 62000eu, 6x6 is more expensive. Extremely terrain vehicle for extreme conditions. Worth every eu for what it offers. And more of these prices.

Tatra make vehicles with similar chassis and suspensions so you may make the connection because Tatra was under the old USSR. There is a connection between the Tatra design and the Pinz
