The Stickie 3.0 came together the morning after I had a dream about different ways to create the extended body on a stick caddis nymph. Yes, sadly I dream about fly tying too!
I wanted a bigger stick caddis, with plenty of weight to it for drifting through deep clear pools where fish were sighted. That week, I was staying with Scott McPherson of Indulgence Flyfishing for a few days so we could go and explore a couple of new stretches of a creek we had been wanting to look at. I got up on the second morning and told him of this cock-eyed theory that I had dreamed off, so, he boiled the kettle and I got straight onto the vise and tied up a few based what I could remember from the previous night's dream.
The resulting nymph caught several fish that day, one going just over 4lb for myself and one weighing in at 8.5lb for Scottie! So, it goes without saying that a lot more were tied. Since then, it has been responsible for a staggering number of very good sized fish over the past year and has well and truly earned itself a place in each and every one of my fly boxes.
