5 years later and this video is still exceptionally helpful! I stood in my shower thinking how the heck....? Now I know exactly what needs to be ordered and how to fix my issue! Amazing, thank you.
I couldn’t get anyone out to fix my shower door. All the places I called said that since they hadn’t installed it, they wouldn’t fix it. I followed your video and fixed it myself. Thank you!
very important to note, when you say, “flip it over”, only flip over the PVC sleeve. If you flip over the entire door and frame. The shower door would open from the inside and that would not be advisable (because the shower door metal hinge has a curve to allow it to open out words only) I tried this and it worked! Thank you so much! My customers are so happy I saved them hundreds of dollars!
Sir, big respect for this video. May thanks to you for the intention and effort. I'm repairing my shower door now. Fantastic. Hope this video is monetized!👊🏾🙂
👏🙌I almost bought a new semi frameless door kit this weekend to fix our door. I've been looking for parts at the local hardware stores and couldn't find any, and in fact wasn't sure what I needed. This video solved it all. Just got the door off the wall. (Was a bit of a pain) Ordering the PVC sleeve now. One thing to note is, not all sleeves are the same. Make sure to measure the inside and outside diameter too.
I just want to say thank you for the video. I’m a DIYer and can figure things out pretty well on my own; however, I not so arrogant to check out a video or two, because knowledge is powerful. You gave great instructions! Thanks!
Thanks for the support Sharla. I had fixed that door several times, but eventually the screws on the bottom of the door stripped out causing the door to drop down. I will be replacing the entire door soon.
This is exactly the problem we are having. Your video was the first one that popped up! Thank you! I felt so bad that no one would come and help you put that door back up.😢
Thanks for the excellent video. This was the only solution that I found to help repair our shower door. The information was presented very clearly and thoroughly. At first I thought this would be a bigger project than I wanted to take on. But I called at least 4 or 5 glass installers and none of them would work with a continuous hinge, so your instructions gave me the confidence to try. My shower door wasn’t as tall, so only weighed about 45 lbs - much easier to handle by myself. The aluminum frame pieces were a little different, but the instructions were so good I got the door off very easily. Using a drill template, it looked like the old sleeve had a 5/16” OD. I ordered the 66” sleeve from Amazon. When I installed the new sleeve I couldn’t get the door closed - it looks like the sleeve is too thick to fit in the opening. I have not heard yet from the supplier if there is another place to order a thinner sleeve, so think I need to find another solution. What type of new door are you planning to use? It seems that continuous hinges are no longer used for shower doors!
Thank you very much for the video. It’s explaining every single step so perfectly and is easy to follow. Just follow the video and voila! We fixed our shower door!👍🏻
Your video saved me more than 2K$. Every one wanted to replace the entire thing. Followed your video/instructions and successfully repaired it myself with flipping it over. Waiting on the part from your amazon link for permanent fix. THANK YOU
Thank you This Guy, I took your advice and tackled this job. I removed the door and inspected the bottom closely. The bottom of my door was corroded and no longer square. I filed off the bottom of the pivot so it was square. I decided to get some #6 stainless washers to place on top of the bottom pin to raise the door about 3/32. First I stacked the washers on a 10 penny nail and ground the diameter down to 5/16 so they would fit in the channel. This made up for what I had to file off and gave me the clearance I was hoping to achieve. I greased them with lithium grease and used WD40 on the hinge sleeve which I did reverse. Door now works like new.
You can still reuse the plastic part if you cut it in half and slide the split ends into the center. That is what i did and the door swings like a dream. Thanks for the video.
Alright man- pretty cool, you’re the only reference I could find when looking to fix issue with my shower hinge- I need little more info because it all looks great but until now I thought I have an issue with the “stopper” that’s in the hinge- as it has )had, as it broke) this small plastic thing at the end that I thought is operating it, pivoting around. I thought I’d just replace it and be done - now I’m thinking I might have even bigger problems… Thank you for sharing this nonetheless!
Thanks for the excellent video assist! I particularly love the little pictures added in for clarity... :). I have this problem with a client's door so will give it a try. Plus, I think your video is the only one out there for this type of repair. Even if it's not the only one, very helpful! Thanks.
I searched this issue, this video pops up. Exact same shower from the door to the tile, Lol...this should make it even easier for me I hope. Well done video, Thank you so much!
Glad to help Shane. Good luck with the door because the hinge design isn't too good. I need to replace my door all together because the screw that holds the hinge in place stripped out.
I am with you, brother. I love WD40. It has a million uses. And thank you for this tutorial. Now I can repair my shower door! Good work! OH! And thanks for letting me know about WD40 cologne for men! I'm headed out to buy some now!
Glad to help James. I do want to add caution that eventually the hinge developed a crack that caused the door to fail completely. I am currently rocking a shower curtain in place of the door. The plan is to replace the entire frame and install a new door.
Thanks bub...I appreciate the information! I have a door with a similar hinge to this and it sure would have made it A LOT harder without this informative and funny video (despite what some might think I think it is hilarious the little pics you were putting up...you don't take yourself too seriously). I was able to get mine out pretty quickly thanks to your video and I have already ordered the replacement part (thankfully only my plastic part was split...I watched your other video too). I am getting ready to put everything back together so I can keep using the shower and will do it all over again once the part arrives....thanks again!
Very helpful. I have the same type of shower door, but in my case, the metal siding that's drilled into the wall is cracked up and causing the door to sag. Where can I buy a replacement for that hardware? Thank you so much again!
Hey Brother!! Thank you for this GREAT video!!! You just helped me sooo much!!! I have at this point bought 6 monthth to a year.!!! VERY DIFFICULT for a one man job. but it can be done. I Jut suscribed and gave you a thumbs up!
@@ThisGuyProductions i was holding it with my son and watched it shatter in our hands lol. I think I can salvage the parts, definitely getting a new hinge (thanks for the link) and the spacers (this was missing! Thanks to your video I realized that) at the bottom. Do you mind sharing that link for the door???
Well done my man .. That effort and that entertaining and informative video is reason to subscribe. Little different from my door, but close enough to glean some tidbits.. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this! My task was slightly more difficult because the hinge was already halfway popped out of the bracket (we just bought the house and that's the condition the shower door was in) and I had to pry it out the rest of the way with a butter knife. But once I got that done, after a bit of sweating and swearing, I was able to get the whole thing replaced and rehung. I also have to replace the rubber gasket at the bottom, but that's a much easier task!
Thanks for the video, fortunately my shower door is not as wide, weight about 35lbs still I got my son to help me install. Now I did the " flipped the hinge" at the broken end I took a piece of heat shrink and shaped it to a U ,installing with this temp fix was difficult because the metal portion would snag the heat shrink but with some beeswax and hour + got it to slide the hinge back to the door, works but for how long. Sub n liked!
Hey, This Guy! Great video, very informative, and I think you've helped me figure out a problem, but I'd like to double check. We had two problems with our door (or rather, same problem, two separate causes) 1st problem: the rubber drip stopper at the bottom had split and started to drag at the handle side, you'd have to lift the door by the handle while opening and closing. Took off the flashing, flipped the rubber around and raised it, all good. 2nd problem: door is still catching at the bottom below the handle. I thought it was the same problem you describe with the hinge sleeve, but I think may actually be the bushings. I can phyically slide the door up and down on the hinge, and I feel like the top bushing is too high. Question: Would it do to just unscrew the bushing, raise the door, slide the bushing down and retighten so that the door can't slide down on the hinge? When I raise the door, i feel like I have almost an inch play between the bushing and the hinge sleeve.
Its been my experience that those bushings screw into a designated hole in the door frame. It wouldn't hurt to remove the door and give it a shot, but proceed with caution. You should also inspect the points where the hinge makes contact to ensure it hasn't warped. That happened to my door in the long run. I will be replacing the entire door soon.
Did that work? That's what I was thinking of doing. Or lifting the door then putting a shem below the bottom hinge so it doesn't drop. Might be best to do both.
@@thomasharp3246 i went with This Guy's knowledge that the screws on the bushings screw into dedicated holes in the housing behind the bushing. I unscrewed, got everything cleaned up, including the long nylon piece, then assembled, placed the **upper** bushing where I actually wanted it, about a quarter to half inch lower within the tube in my case, so it snugly sandwiched the hinge. I then drilled a new hole through where the bushing's screw hole newly lined up, being careful to make it a fraction smaller than the screw so that the screw would thread itself a new home. I did that the day after my comments with This Guy and so far I haven't had any issues since, though i must have slightly altered the levelness of the door, since it likes to swing closed now, not an issue for me. I just need to readjust the level of the drain trough at the bottom again to make it properly drain instead of dumping water on the outside when you open the door.
@@thomasharp3246 i should note that I adjusted the top bushing down, because when i would lift the door UP, i had a quarter to half inch of play, so i moved the bushing DOWN so that it would stay at the higher position, hope that's not confusing.
Hi, thanks for this video, I opened the hinge tried to slide and it didn’t move, then I took the door out and took the hinge out to find that it resting on a small hole and its holding in the place with that hole. What should I do now?
Great video, thanks for taking the time to make this. In my situation I have the exact same door. The door has "dropped" so to speak causing the bottom to scrape on the bottom rail. Is the plastic hinge insert the reason that it would cause the drop? My aluminum rails do no appear to be cracked in any way. Does the weight of the glass sit on the plastic sleeve hinge?
Careful because my door wasn't dropping off the frame. It was leaning because of the broken hinge. Recently my door started "dropping" and it was due to the aluminum frame wearing out and causing a curve in the hinge. Basically, there is no repair if your hinge has warped. I am awaiting an entire door replacement soon.
Thanks for the video. Mine was a bit tough as the screws and hinge were quite stubborn to remove. Probably 20 years of hard water would do that. What perplexes me is…why doesn’t Home Depot or Lowe’s carry this part??? If they did, this wouldn’t cost us $50. I guess they’d rather us buy a new shower door than fix an existing one.
Yeah, its an oddity to me too. THank goodness for the internet. I am flustered that I cant just buy a replacement door. They only sell the entire enclosure.
Great video sir. I have a question about the bottom bracket with the set screw. Is it the continuous henge that keeps the door from rubbing at the bottom? I am looking at my dad's door and I don't see the hinge coming down to meet the bottom set screw bracket. The door was taken off to do tile work so somehow someone must have had the door jacked up prior at the bottom so it wouldn't rub. Could this be the case? Thanks Steve
#1 Thanks for the very informative video! #2 Yes WD40 smells amazing to me too #3 You have done this a few times, but i have to ask the question..............does the door really need to come off to get to the plastic hinge? or can one carefully pull the old plastic hinge pin and carefully slide in the new replacement? and thanks again for the video it saved me probably a couple hundred bucks!
i have the exact same problem. how do i know the thickness of the hinges ? i have the following descriptions on the top corner of the shower door: tempered ANSI Z97.1-2004 16 CFR 1201 II SGCC-25743 3/16 UA thanks
My door didn't have that plastic "hinge". it was round metal, part in the whole piece. It appears that the door glass actually slipped down, not sure how to get it sleeve portion to slide down. probably special tool needed.
Hey Nate, The metal on my hings has a hairline crack now forming that is causing the door to sage. The manufacturer said they dont sell hinges and that the whole door needs to be replaced at around $300. I bought some JB Weld and plan to try it out this week. I will post a video as well. I am not certain it will work, but will need to try something before making such an expensive repair. Once the JB weld is applied I will keep an eye on it to let anyone else with the same problem know how it works out. Keep an out out for the video.
Hey Nate, I just posted a new video where I show how to fix the cracked hinge with JB Weld. I'm not sure if your door has the same issue as mine, but so far the solution I have put in place seems to work.
Where can I find a replacement for the continuous hinge itself, not the sleeve. My chrome piece is shredded off a little bit, from waiting to long to replace hinge sleeve. Thanks
I watched your video on how to replace a new hinge sleeve for a droopy glass door. If only my door was the same as yours! Once we took the door off the hinge, there were no screws to loosen to remove the hinge itself. Any ideas on how to remove the hinge itself to change out the sleeve?
Can you send me a photo of your hinge and closeups of the ends where the screws would be? bds.mark.benavidez@gmail.com . There are so many different types of doors out there, so not sure if I will have a solid solution. I am working to replace my door entirely using an off the shelf kit from Lowes. Once I get it I will post a video about it.
Hey Kevin, I have had zero success finding the hinge parts alone. I have found plenty of vendors willing to sell me an entire door with it though. What is the issue with the aluminum portion? Mine cracked, but I was able to fix it (temporarily) with JB Weld. That video is on my channel.
@@ThisGuyProductions The aluminum portion that the plastic slides over has split away at it's base on top of the channel. I cut the top part of the rail off. installed the door and for about six months it worked fine. Now it's doing it again. I'm in the cabinet business and my glass guy who's been doing this for 30+ years has no idea where to get it anymore. So I guess it's going to be a complete remodel. LOL Thanks for responding. Love your channel
So glad it was helpful! Keep an eye on the metal part of the hing. Not the door hinge, but the frame it sits onto. It may start to develop a hairline crack. This will also cause the door to sag. Mine recently cracked and I am working on a solution.
This Guy thanks for the tip...have to keep an eye on that...I did your trick of flipping the black casing to buy me some time before ordering a new one. I’ll watch for that next video...thanks again.
This is the one I purchased. It was 6 inches too long but I am sure you can find one at the right size already. Also, look for a hairline crack near the top of the hinge to ensure the sagging isnt due to that. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01F44H4W8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I don't know if I understand this. What was wrong with the original hinge that you knew it needed replacement? I have a continuous hinge as well and I have the same issues that you've described. How will I know that the replacement of the hinge will fix my issue?
Unfortunately, it's a process of elimination. I know my plastic hinge sleeve was cracked because it popped and made sounds when the door was opened and closed. Later on my door developed a small hairline crack on the aluminum part of the hinge that I repaired with JB Weld. It wasn't pretty, but it helped. If your hinge is making popping and cracking sounds when operating the door, this video will help you.
Man I'm glad you have the same shower door as I have. Most of the other videos I found for this had the leveling pin/screw. Are those plastic sleeves available at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc?
I could never find them anywhere else but online. I put a link to the one I bought in the video description. These types of shower doors will fail in about 10 years of use though. Mine now has a deformed hinge that keeps slipping off the track.
I have a slightly different door. Mine has aluminum stops at each end. There are 2 pieces of plastic sleeves (?) in the hinge assembly. The round sleeve is less stiff than the one I ordered and it is made of a translucent plastic material. The other piece is just a straight piece of the same material. Any thoughts. I bought the 66 inch version with the same measurement...I could not get it on the assembly at all...I ended up destroying it.
Hey Mavis, it may be due to a small hairline crack on the aluminum hinge. I have a video where I used JB weld to fix the issue. I have actually fixed this door so many times that the hinge finally failed all together. I have a shower curtain up right now until I can replace the door all together.
I see you got the Hinge Sleeve for Shower Doors with Continuous Hinge - 72" Long | Outside Dia.: 5/16" | Inside Dia: 1/4"... how do you know what size you have to get?
It's gonna sound like a smart a$$ reply, but just take a ruler and measure the sleeve. When you flip the sleeve to buy you some time, you can grab the measurements. There aren't too many options out there outside of the length.
Whats the size of that hinge pin and do you know where i can order one or two? it seems to be the plastic hinge pin broke and its not the sleeve itself. thank you.
mine didnt come with the metal end piece with the screw to set it. I have plastic ones that are chipping and the door hinge slides too easily. Anywhere i can buy some?
You can find replacement hinge pins all over the internet. You can probably get metal ones instead of plastic. The challenge is finding the ones that fit best. Please be sure to double check return policies.
My shower door was slightly sagging on one side causing it to be more difficult to close. So I pulled out my plastic hinge like you described but it isn’t split at all. Any other reason it would still sag? The continuous hinge sleeve appears to be about one inch too short for the whole door, could that much cause an issue?
It could be due to a small hairline crack in the hinge near the top. You have to look really close to find it. It can also be due to a shift in the metal posts with the screws in them that hold that plastic hinge in place. They may have slipped. I have had some success reinstalling the door at a very slight angle then replacing the self tapping screw in a new position. In other words, you are installing the door angled slightly to compensate for the sag.
Mine was a little sticky. I think I added WD40 to get it to slide on like butter. I believe there are two lengths and two thicknesses to choose from on the seller I used.
There are not leveling screws unfortunately. You may have a hairline crack in the metal hinge. I did and ended up using some JB weld to patch it. I did post a video about that. Another thing I plan to do soon is to reinstall the door using the self tapping screws currently in place, but instead of installing the door straight up and down, I will angle it slightly so that the other end of the door is slightly lifted. I will then drill the self tapping screw into a new spot. Its a last ditch effort to buy some more time until I need to replace the door all together.
@@ThisGuyProductions I figured it out for my case at least. The glass shifted inside the frame which caused the geometry to be off. Make sure the frame is fully around the glass!
I have listed it on a few comments here. I am not sure if the seller still has them. Here is the link I used: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01F44H4W8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
