What a good attempt at having a go at describing sticking hands, you are wandering into other fields of skill and there are many fields of related skill that run together with sticking hands, stance, short power, 12 forms of ging power, dung gung, inch force, and about 50 other related fields . Sticking hands is a vehicle between set training and and fighting in ancient China it was frowned on that a student was hurt as who would feed them as no form of insurance was available other than family support a thing that was unfavourable to demand and frowned upon by all . There's a whole story about the morality of fighting and hurting 10,000 steps from high mountain to the sea. This is all about the human condition of desire and domination of resources and how the masters managed the population in a less violent method of water resources which in its time was money . Gate theory was discussed this has 3 levels high med and low so as you stick to a person for a fraction of a second which gate do you use and also ying yang theory when exerting pulling or pressing directional change when and why . Dung gung the opening of gates to allow a blow through the defence for impact destruction on them . The first and quite a good skill to add to sticking hands a short force basically you contact stick for a fraction of a second to align forces then detonate a massive energy burst that the area of the body cant tolerate either generally or specifically. This is why these are separately trained as this is very dangerous to join them like putting a primmer in a grenade not for the foolish or greedy masters are very carful about this union as there are many stories about fools flexing their abilities on the population for their own benefit. Maybe in the future a structure could be safely explored . Thank you for this exploration and maybe more to come.

Indeed it is a place in which everything comes together and can go in many ways. My teacher would always describe sparring and sticky hands as a laboratory where you test and try your stuff and help both yourself and partner to elevate your skills. I am definitely making more videos on sticky hands in the future. The full videos of which are going to be available on my patreon, link in description. But I will likely show clips here as well. Thank you for giving your view on this as well!

@@redjademartialartsofmchenry Here is one to think on.A circle is a pure form as you attempt to make this it changes when in contact with another as soon as you get slippage This disharmony is the begining of a potential event and is this event turning yin or Yang because the appropriate response should be the opposite as its potentially a harmonious answer yin Yang yin Yang kind of idea a basic understanding of the 5 elements is handy as an observational tool for solutions to tactical problems it's like the play ground game paper scissors rock kind of idea

@@mrvgranfield Indeed, the circle deviates on it’s original course. I look at it as a sphere encompassing me and my opponent. My hands trace the sphere at different vectors and as contact is made, the vectors change. Taking the disharmony that can occur from being disrupted and curve to trace the sphere another direction. Yin/yang overflowing like a wave of change. Change too quick for the opponent to have a proper yin/Yang response as it would have already changed by the time they can respond. Not with physical speed, but with continuous adaptability.

Damn...I need to hear from this commenter. So many things to learn. He explains why there wasn't a sparring system in Kung Fu. Very practical reasons. But, how do you improve fighting? This is still a problem in modern systems (not only chinese systems) wherein a person can train for 10 years and still be incapable of fighting. It's a puzzle.

@@davidbarnwell6180 In the past in China if you got injured it was frowned on badly because most people were agricultural peasant class. Every one worked for their bowl of rice every day so if you got injured through the folly and stupidity of fighting for ego this would be a double disliked and deemed a disgraceful as costly fool. We in the west have lost the idea of clan mentality and the benefits to the collective so if you go against the hive mentality you had better be trained and very good at fighting as you may get big trouble from not only your clan but the other clan as well so you better have good reason as this would cause a big problem for not only you but worse from your clan as well. The 10,000 steps is about the Tibetan waters passage to the see and its rice paddy's stepping all the way to the sea. SIEFU'S were a vitally important cog in the great societal wheal as they would train people in kung fu ( MANY SKILLED APROACH).The skill level for most would be low mostly practiced a bit daily and at the end of harvest when pressure was off a bit and one could train .This was mainly to defend water rights for the clans rice paddy vital for the clans interests so the water would be fought for if deemed unfair or disproportionate water hoarding. A gang of able young men would go up the hill for a punch up and restore water passage back to normal or increased, it would be vital that it was just a bit of vandalism and a punch up at most . This is how the upper sifu and lower sifu would like things to work out don't forget there was no law so this balance was vital to harmony and reasonableness of the water crimes the Sifu's would try to balance this heated blood so everything would start to run smoothly again. This would now be call resource management of an exotic kind, However the siefus had special students Di Sie Hing or number two long term project this is the point where training takes a different root remember the many skills part mentioned before this is how the training would begin first set training with many JONG training devices wood poles bamboo sand bags etc the beginning of conditioning toughening up the body normally with chi gung within the training breath work (hay lek) out of the hundreds or even thousands of skills depending on trust dedication and perseverance the skill tree would be added like selecting a musician for an orchestra string wind precision type of outlook deadly skills being the very last and never shown to normal students as this would be the root to the worst repercussions,. No law has its down side as well as the group or clan would be held guilty for misdeeds and could be held accountable from a siefu's point of view a massive liability so high training was a precarious endeavour and some siefu's would rather not train students to a high level especially if powerful Clans were abound .Departmentalization of skill groups like( sticking hands, legs, body) mostly forgotten now are one of the first joining skills to join forms to combat in a controlled (SAFE WAY) to practice random inclusions so that one can control random energy either in pulling or pushing kicking or grappling these move on to short power skills shock palms elbow skills knuckle punches clawing pinching sealing the blood taking the breath etc cum na joint locking sealing the cavities dim mak point striking and medicine as well as many other skills can all be added to these structures these are the true weapons and to learn them is a responsibility in it self as in our day this would be way to dangerous to explain on a public forum but I hope this gives some idea how kung fu morality of combat has come about as its mystifying to many . There were 400 kung fu styles at its peak so its hard to fit all in one bag so my apologies to some.

Could it be also that most traditional arts are grappling arts as well as strking arts? So, when I hit i want to grab immediately after? Or when im wrestling im combining striking with my wrestling? So sticky hands allows me to train that element of continuity? Continous pressure? That im not trying to disengage? Because Im always trying to wrestle after I hit or vice versa?

@@davidbarnwell6180 that’s exactly it. In Chinese arts, distinguishing between grappling and striking was more a modern phenomenon. Before it was said there are 4 aspects of Chinese arts, Da(hitting), Ti(kicking), Shuai(wrestling/throwing),and Qin na(locking/acupoints Striking). While some arts may prefer one of these methods over others, all 4 still make up the art. And with the constant adherence, there is non-stop pressure on the opponent. Never allowing them a chance to “reset.”

This would be the grapplers approach to chi sau but there are many other types for example in kung fu there is no limit on adversaries multiple fighters so in a massive brawl depending on it severity (one solution blows) are the recommended solution. Grappling is in that circumstance not a recommended approach as you would get badly cut maimed or killed as it takes to much time and energy and is way to vulnerable while fighting, but is fine one on one .

@@mrvgranfield many associate the word grappling with wraps and locks and while it is that, it isn’t limited to that. Simple single throws are a part of it as well. This sticky hands exercise is about building sensitivity and swarming/sticking ability while fighting. It would apply the same to multiple opponent situations. The only difference is the weaving in and out of opponents and changing who you are sticking to at any given moment. As the video is presenting it in a one on one scenario and not showing how it would be done with multiple opponents, it is understandable that there would be misunderstandings about its application to multiple opponents. But we have to understand that the idea that this is solely for one on one is a misunderstanding. About grappling in multiple opponent fights, grappling is extremely effective, but not in the way some might understand grappling as being “entangled” with an opponent. Our Cheng style Baguazhang for example covers this well. It is essentially a wrestling style on wheels. Running and weaving footwork with quick, nasty throws. It’s approach to multiple opponents is to use its weaving footwork to get to the outer edge of the group and throw down the opponents one by one, continuing to weave to the outside so that we are only ever engaging one at a time. Considering that the earth is a non forgiving weapon when being thrown onto it, for many it will damage and take them time to get back up. In the time that one gets up, another is thrown.
