Stihl 044 Cylinder Rebuild: Got It Running!

Overall the Rebuild process was very strait forward it only took a T27 torx and an 8mm socket to get everything apart, mostly just a lot of fiddling until things slip into place. Now the only thing left to do is fine tune the carb and oiler and maybe pick up some little add on bits and pieces like new dogs and a real bar cover and I'll be ready to go out and get'er cutting

My 044 still can pull the cord out off my hand if i don't think , i bought it new in approx 1992 . I love it . Used for falling eucalyptus and up to 6ft dia dry red gum fire wood . Clean air and fuel . And it still looks good .ps , i put an oil soaked air filter on it from new and simply washed it each fuel up with the same 2 stroke mix , clean and oiled at the same time

That cylnder is a little dark colored for Hyway. Some 044s had both 10 and 12mm .

Just bought one of these used. Runs great but needs a new oiler, so I got a kit off Amazon. We'll see if that does it.

On the note of a fresh rebuild, I picked up a Stihl 290 that wasn’t running Did a lil diagnostics and found it had a broken ring Scored the hell out of the cylinder and destroyed the piston The saw looked like it was redone Clean where it would normally be built up with gunk Even the carb was spotless The only way I could figure it failed, was cheap parts

Sounds like a great candidate for more cheap parts lol. I'd throw a $60 Chinese 039/390 big bore kit on it and either run it or flip it

I stuck a 390 meteor cylinder and piston amd sold it for $250 to my neighbor He’s an ex firefighter He needs a good saw
