We ran out of space on the SD card and missed out on the stocker ms461. Probably just as well. "Wooda" embarrassed itself I am betting. We did run the 044, since it was already barred up, against the stocker 461 in the next recording session to get an idea. You will be able to view that meeting later if all goes well.
A nice little saw-off for comparison purposes.
Using a 33" Oregon lw bar with my full complement Windsor chain. Still trying to get the inland grind dialed in - 2nd attempt here.
I get asked on how much power is gained from certain builds. Here is a pretty good bench mark for what the kits yield. I did try and let the saws feed as close to the same since the dawgs on the 660 are the intermediate size that come with the 1/2 version saws. Both the 461 & 044 have the big kid version clutch cover and bucking spikes which will change the leverage.
The 461 has ~ 1/2 a tank of fuel run through it and was first started, here, in the video after the operation was completed. The 660 has around 5/6 tank burned and the 044 is well broken in but as you can see from the appearance it is still in primo condition.
In the haste at the end, the tach reading for the 044 did not get verified visually. Master Payton seemed to thing it was ~ the 11k number when I asked him later. Also in the haste, had the 044 spooled up a bit more at the upper threshold, rpms wise. From the look of things, it still would have left the 660 behind had it been in the 13.6k range for the wot reading.
Also worth noting, and I mentioned it, the 461 was WAY fat on the high speed setting. It would have Been a little faster had the high speed needle been in the 14/14.5k range.
I am currently available for custom saw modifications. If you are interested, please shoot me an email.

Stock form both with 36 inch bars a 461 and 660 are equal. The 2 main downfalls of the 660 are the low rpm and the air filtration system. I have a stock 461 and my friend has a stock 660, we took them and run through hard maple with 36 inch bars on both with 115 driver full comp full chisel chains and one touch up before we started, I filed mine and he filed his never touching the rakers(depth gauges). With both bars completely buried in that maple they run side by side for the first cut then the 660 fell on its face in the second and third cuts from a plugged air filter. Bigger don't mean better. I bought my saw used but if I had bought it new I would've stepped up to a 661(completely different saw from a 660) because of the insignificant price difference. For cutting timber though I'd prefer my 461 because it's a bit lighter and balances well with a 20 inch bar where a 661 balances better with a 28 inch bar. More teeth to sharpen and harder to move around with that big saw in my area of Virginia any way

@fabzacres-blackcat 5 лет назад
The 461 is a quad-transfer design whilst the 660 is old-school dual transfers ... I agree the 461 and 660 are pretty close thru the timber in stock form ... Jacks 461 just beat up on the stock 660 while rich on the high idle ... If one mods the 660 properly and runs a max-flow air filter system methinks the 660 sends the 461 packing ! 91.3 cc vs 76.5 no replacement for displacement IF done properly!

@@fabzacres-blackcat all a modded 660 is going to do is match a modded 461 pulling a 36 or less. Now put a 41 inch bar in there and the 461 can't handle it but in my neck of the woods just about everyone runs a 461 or 372xp because the trees normally don't call for a bar longer than 20 inches unless you get a small 2 acre virgin tract then you can cut most anything with a 25 which you don't need a bigger saw for
@fabzacres-blackcat
@fabzacres-blackcat 5 лет назад
ian martin I own both saws and respectfully disagree ... 461r built by Jack and a 660 built by yours truly ... The modded 660 pulls like a freight-train and sure feels stronger than the 461 but then again it has 17cc larger displacement so similarly modded it Should pull-harder ... I use a 20”-25” on the 461 and 25” -32” on the 660 for the occasional “big” timber ...I do prefer the 461r all things equal but have recently acquired a 462c ... I’m liking that version with a 20”-25” bar / chain also ... Just started modding the 462c so we shall see how it works out
@ianmartin7283
@ianmartin7283 5 лет назад
2 saws that are equal stock and should be equal when modded the same way. It's just like you can't multiply by 0 and end up with anything other than 0. A 461 will always be faster stock or modded for just because it runs at a higher rpm. There's not very you can do to get a 660 to go over 12,5 where a 461 likes it in the 14,5 range. Also how did you get a 462? Do you live outside the states?
@fabzacres-blackcat
@fabzacres-blackcat 5 лет назад
Yah , stock for stock a 461 will run with a 660 ; this is due to the low bmep of the 660 ... once modded properly the 660 WILL chew thru 25” and larger logs faster than the 461 ... I know this for a fact as I own both (461 and 660) - if you click my icon I have a video of a hot woods ported 660 that may open your eyes ... the 462 has been available in Canada since nov 1st and since last week of January in the states ... wrap and adj carb NA... ps ... the max rpm numbers you provided are incorrect ... both the stock 461 and 660 equipped with adj carburetor have a max of 13500 rpm ... don’t know where you are getting 14500 and 12500 for the 461 and 660 respectively?

Real question is how much money is invested in each one? That is where the rubber meets the road....$ amount per second saved when cutting.
@fabzacres-blackcat
@fabzacres-blackcat 5 лет назад
That’s an interesting question Mike ... imho IF a guy has enough work to warrant the extra cost then by all means make the investment - IF a guy is cutting firewood to heat his home then maybe get an older used saw or a new farm/ranch version ... If you’re using the Saw for Felling / Wood Processing / Chainsaw Milling etc the “stock” offerings pale in comparison to well-ported ones ... Lotsa guys porting saws nowadays , some good some not so good ... some get decent gains some moreso ... I actually own 2 saws built by Jack and he builds a durable, powerful saw ; never had as much as a hiccup from either one and both are STIHL producing to this day
@mikewhitman830
@mikewhitman830 5 лет назад
@@fabzacres-blackcat appreciation! ✌ I personally am a mix between firewood guy, small mill operation, and so some falling for friends and such. I have been thinking of getting a saw done up by Jack and my question was intended to get some feedback. What size Stihls did he build for ya AND so you feel that the band was worth the buck? Thanks in advance!!

Mike Whitman 241c insane-0 and 461r extreme ... I have a few videos of them in operation on my utube channel ... Saws have more than earned their keep and are STIHL in tip-top running shape ... The extra cost incurred initially was more than paid for after a few jobs and its all gravy after that - plus you have the enjoyment of running a ripper saw ... how does one put a $ amount on that ?
@fabzacres-blackcat
@fabzacres-blackcat 5 лет назад
Mike Whitman I “Wood” think that a Hotsaws101 461R wood be a fine Saw if Jack can STIHL get them ... He makes the 461R really “bark” and will easily pull a 32” + bar thru hardwood ... I’ve got 20” 25” 28” and 32” bar/chains for my 461R - truly a “one saw to rule them all “ plan
@ctllogger
@ctllogger 5 лет назад
That's a interesting way to look at it. My 461R that Jack operated on is 11 seconds faster per cut than stock. I use it on landing for bucking logs has over 2 million bd. ft. Still running strong.

The "whine" he was talking about on the 660 @13:00 may have been the chain seating on the spocket. I didn't hear anything different on this end.

mighty strange to hear a saw blubbering at almost 14k rpm!! Usually figure they'll come up way short of that if they're sounding like that!

The 44 moves right along! And who doesn't want to hop out of the crummy and tell everyone on the landing, I've got a 44 magnum, do you feel lucky? Sure makes it hard to run a stock saw after running a well tuned worked over saw!

Looks like the times were 1)461 20sec ; 2) 660 25 sec; 3) 044 20sec .... I have a 660 that I recently built that wood give both smaller siblings a haircut lol ... the stock 660 is a bit of a dog in stock trim ... the bmep is WAY low for that size Saw ...
@fabzacres-blackcat
@fabzacres-blackcat 5 лет назад
Yah , I believe the 660 is around 7.2hp stock - pretty sure with a dual-port cover and retune ya get around 7.8hp ... 91cc Saw with tiny stock exhaust outlet ... wasn’t pleased with mine until it was “flow-enhanced” now it hits all the targets up to 10000rpm and pulls like a freight train ! Don’t know what STIHL was thinking on that version? Maybe Epa ???
