Filmed in April, 2022.
I had done a fair amount of saw testing on a couple of the ms400s over the last month or so. Small variations of the zippkit tweaking process. I was curious to see how the magnesium piston was going to hold up.
One of the "phases" of testing was 4 different am air filters. So in that session there are 5 runs. The trouble with this log is that it is riddled with knots. It is therefore hard to get an accurate (fair) determination. I plan on reevaluating at some point.
The 400 seen here has been tweaked 3 times. The initial zippkit, then 2 slight changes as I was easing into the "Mag" Slug concept. What we see here is a 400 in Psy-Ko S trim.
The pun on the meteorological conditions was to address the fact that the 5ooi was run when the air was much cooler the evening before. Cool air is more dense generally speaking. Water vapor plays a part in the density as well. More dense air gives better performance to an internal combustion engine.
I cannot say enough about the transformation of the "little turkey" as is seen here besting Stihl®s "golden boy" saw.
Looking at the displacement numbers and how they are derived:
ms400 has a piston swept volume of 66.8cc - 50mm bore x 34mm stroke.
ms500i has a slug swept volume of 79.2cc - 54mm bore x 34.6mm stroke.
Looking at the Stihl® factory rated hp (where hp is relative):
ms400 is 5.4 bhp.
ms500i is 6.8 bhp.
Looking at the timed runs:
4oo @14,040 302R tach & 14,100 edt-9 tach went 10.88 down and 10.88 up.
5oo @ 13,380 with the edt-9 went 12.41 down, 11.29 up, and 10.95 up.
Do I even need to discuss the chain stall...
In the end, a saw down on displacement by 12.4cc was running a little better than the current boy wonder in the saw world. The 400 wins against the 500i again.
I was becoming more well pleased with te 400 the further along I went with the SawShop MakeOver process.
At the time of your viewing this, I may, or may not, be immediately available for custom saw modifications. I am booked out several months regularly. If you are interested in having a saw zipped, please shoot me an email. That is the best, first point of contact.

The 400c piston is not ceramic coated. It's pure magnesium. Stihl used ceramic coating for the T&E testing, which is where that rumor "ceramic coating" comes from. During testing, Stihl found that ceramics were both very abrasive on the chrome lining of the cylinder, and offered no heat dissipation nor weight savings over aluminum. The MS400c piston is completely magnesium that's gone through a complex electrolysis treatment that hardens the outer surface. Remember, Stihl owns one of the largest magnesium forges on the globe, and provide forged blanks to a lot of companies, from tech to small engines to automotive applications. Regardless, is a magnesium piston better than aluminum?... Maybe. Probably not..... ??? Light pistons make quick rpm, heavy pistons make torque... So... ??? It's a double edged sword. I don't see this as becoming an industry standard, as aluminum is cheaper, easier, and stronger. Still, it's a very cool concept with definite historic notoriety. I wish Husqvarna would do that kind of thing again. But the way that they're losing money on the xp line of saws, how far behind they are on technology, and their removing dealership certifications is troubling.

@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 2 года назад
Phil hi. Considering that not all the teeth are exactly the same length on all chains from the factory every time, I'd say no. As long as the teeth & stops are "purdy" close to the same the chain will perform well. Thanks for watching.

Hey Hotsaws, Mike here, You're aSmart fella it seems, I was noticing your struggle with the tach the way you are holding it, Why not fashion a holding device that atatches to the handlebar and then all you have to manipulate is that wire on the edt9...Just saying might be easier to get that reading...

@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 2 года назад
Bryan hi. From "awhile back" - My 346 is the Micro mini Howler. The 262s and then 357s were the Micro Howlers. So by default the 562 and/or 362s are of the Micro varietal. And once properly "did", Howlers. Mini Howlers were the 372s & 046s. Keeping in mind these pet names started well over 20 years ago. When the timber was just starting to get to the 32" bar size. The "little turkey" came after running the 400 in zipped form. It was - "man that little turkey flat gets with it". It is micro in the weight category. It's maxi in the power delivery. Maybe a name change that is more indicative to it's capabilities is in order. Hidalgo comes to mind. Thanks for watching.

Can it be done, put a top end and Piston from a 400 on the 362?
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 2 года назад
O0ninja00 hi. The bolt pattern is the same. The charge (fuel & air) delivery design is not the same. So a 400 cylinder assembly will bolt on but it won't flow properly. Not to mention that the 400 assembly ranges in cost from 410 to 439 at several different Stihl shops. Thanks for watching.
@00ninja00
@00ninja00 2 года назад
@@hotsaws101 ah I see. So it would need a lot of things like maybe the air/fuel system (carb assembly etc) if it is even doable. Cost wise it wouldn’t make sense then if the top end is already that costly, minus any additional items needed like the air fuel items. I have a couple 362 old non-Mtronic, and thought about trying to make one into a 400, if cost wasn’t crazy, but at that price, It’s not worth trying (since it’s not even a guarantee it’ll be doable). Thank you for the reply. Keep up the good work you do. I love watching your videos, even though I’m not a saw or tree guy. I like saws and tools and enjoy watching your videos, your expertise on saws is just amazing!

Is it a bad idea to run the 110 octane gas with the 400?
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 Год назад
Some of the newer Stihl's have pretty decent compression. I've never noticed where an engine that spins up is hurt from a high(er) octane fuel either. But, most of those are leaded. No guides, stems, seats, aka values, that need the lead for lubrication. YOUR lungs need the lead even less. I'd go with a 105 unleaded before using a 110 leaded personally. Thanks for watching.
