My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. I was looking for a lightweight blower for my deck. ru-vid.comUgkxgioZQl3J5wPGAeDINzbieKbT5qomSEx3 There are some huge trees around my house and the leaves and pods drop all over my deck. Having to move furniture around to sweep has become too big a chore. This blower was the answer. It is light enough for this 70yr old lady and powerful enough to blow all the tree droppings off my rather large deck. Thank you B&D. Be aware the cord is not included. I use a 3 prong outdoor cord 25' cord for my 12' x 20' deck. The cord retainer works very well, but don't try to pass the plug through it. That is NOT how it works. You just have to loop the cord and it works great. One of my best purchases. Very happy.

I learned a trick from Leon's Chainsaw Parts and Repairs regarding carburetor testing. He has a tool to pressurize the fuel inlet, which checks the needle valve as well as the gaskets on the pump side of the carb. I use a Mini-vac hand pump to pressurize the inlet. It should hold 5 psi for 10 minutes. This has saved me a LOT of aggravation on two cycle diaphragm carburetors and has gained me some happy customers. You could also pressurize the tank to verify the vent on the tank. Thank you for making videos and helping people with their small engines!

I repaired diesel locomotives for 12 years and they were much easier to deal with. These little engines can be a pain in the ass..

During WW2 before starting some aircraft the ground crew had to turn over the engine to eliminate hydro lock before starting the engine. This was due to oil leaking past the rings.

Not just ww2. Still done today on the yak for instance. Any radial engine can get oil and fuel in the lower cylinder.

You can take a 10 gauge ( Yellow ) wire connector jammed over the needle screw heads and turn the adjustment in or out

The proper term she's wanting to use is hydra- locked. It's not compressible which is the reason it locks up. It can cause major problems If it can get turned over. This lady knows all this stuff, she's a dang fine mechanic.

Tanaka ECS356 Tanaka kogyo Co. Ltd. it has an oil adjuster on it. originally my father in law left gas in it (completely dried up) so I used carb cleaner (gas additive) to soak out the nasty stuff. then rinsed with gas mix , then finally put fresh mix in and got it running. I am looking for replacement air filter, and new plug. this is my back up saw, it also came with a jig & round file to hand sharpen the blade, have not tried that yet. how long does gas/oil mix stay useable? I have been using the stihl oil mix with alcohol free high test gas. thank you or your reply love your videos they are so helpful in taking care of all of the small engines that I have. have a great day. barry

@@artillerest43rdva7 if u use pump gas non ethanol 93 then I'd say 3-6 months. Stihl guarantee their fuel unopened 10 year shelf life and 3 years after the deal is broken. Anyway what I do is but a small thing of Stihl pre-mix fuel and when I'm done with the weedeater-chainsaw etc I empty my tank, put just enough of pre-mix to get the engine started and let it run everything out to where it has premix in it through storage. It works for me.

Yep, funny thing about liquids is they can throw tantrums sometimes, especially when you try to compress them. That's when they give you the bird and say "No, and I'm going to break something if you try and make me." Many years ago I was in a hurry and drove through a particularly deep and long puddle that was hanging out against the curb after several days of heavy rain. My car had a cool air intake with a low tube that went by the tire, never cared too much about exactly how high it was off the ground and my setup did not have an in-line relief valve. Made it about 2/3s through the puddle before the engine went BUMP and the car died. About a week later 3 of my 4 piston rods came out of the engine in an S shape, along with about 2 cups of water from the manifold. That's how I learned about the term hydra locked ^_^ good times.

Regarding the hi and lo carb adjustment screws being damaged, I have used a dremel tool with a cutter disc to cut a slot in the head of damaged screw and then just used a regular screw driver to make adjustment. If the damaged screw is below the casting, just cut through the casting to get to the screw. I have successfully used this method several times.

Excellent, just what I needed. I got an Echo doing the same thing but leaks out the carb intake and onto the garage floor. It does have a vent thingy with a hose attached to the gas tank, definitely will check that first before moving on to carb. Thanks Chick!

I have a blower like that and have been keeping it in my truck. Very good informative video. The last time I checked the gas after being in the hot truck it was under very high pressure and blew out gas. I am lucky it did not flood out like the one in this video.

Hi The term for getting so too much fluid in the cylinder that it won’t turn over is called hydro -lock. That is one of reasons why they hand turn the props on a radial engine before start. Thanks for the good information an keep up the good videos Harry B.

This is why I store my tools with fuel removed and fuel tube ran dry. Cuts done on corrosion and pressure. Worth it. If using it often, store it cool as possible.

been watching your videos for awhile now. just helped me with a problem. been doing some chain saw carvings a lot since Christmas last year. have made about 10 bears, 10 owls, three eagles and a couple turtles so far. well for Father's Day was making Dad a 36" tall welcome bear and my main carving saw (240 Husqvarna) started running poorly.lack of power mostly. adjusted the carb and got the job done, but still not running great. today started another owl and the same problem again. awhile ago you had a video will a Stihl blower or trimmer and found the muffler screen all carboned up. So took out the screen on my saw and found it almost completely plugged up. cleaned it up, put back together and a little carb adjustment and running great again. some of the problem is that doing carvings you are only running the saw at low RPM's about half the time. sorry, this got so long, but thanks.

Wow that gas trick to get the fuel out through the spark plug hole is awesome!! You get the gas out AND water the lawn at the same time! Nobody look behind her at the wide open concrete space where the gas would evaporate in a matter of seconds and not damage the lawn or ground .

I use, and recommend using copper base anti-sieze on the muffler bolt threads. I have a roll-up stick from loctite. Never use aluminum based anti-sieze. Just a suggestion from a retired seventy three year old industrial mechanical technician. Have a good day.

@@jeffcooper5789 I learned, in a foundry with continuous high heat that the aluminum based anti sieze would cause the threaded area to sieze. Doesn't sound right but would seize every time. Finally I learned copper base solved my problem with thread siezing.

Wow... that was a lot of fuel. I've had to work on saws that were pulled 40 times with full choke and I've never seen flooding that bad. Great video and great work, I fix tools for the fire department and firefighters can be a bit... harsh... on their tools, so now I can add this to the possible cause and 'how to fix' checklist. In fact I just ordered a carburetor for an MS 460 today because a saw won't stay running after somebody turned out the idle screw to the point of removal and then manhandled it when trying to screw it back in. Now the threads on the idle screw are buggered and it chewed up the threads inside the carb as well so, RIP on that one. Hoping there aren't any additional issues and we'll see if the new carb fixes it.

I was able to push a piece of fuel hose on my hi/lo screws and adjust them with no damage. I now have the correct tools to adjust mine from a set like you show here.

Pull the fuel pump diaphragm and hold it up to a bright light, I suspect you will find a hairline crack in it. The crack will pump fuel through the impulse port into the bottom end of the engine causing the hydro-lock. I've replaced several units under warranty due to the connecting rod being bent. The issue is caused by the carb body casting not aligning with the cover casting. The constant flexing of the diaphragm against the mis-alignment of the castings causes the crack. I've brought this issue up with my distributer in Missouri, as well as Stihl corporate in Virginia Beach when I was there for training recently. This issue is often mis-diagnosed as a leaking needle because the carb won't hold pressure when tested via the fuel line connection, put you thumb over the impulse port on the carb and it will hold pressure. Thank You.

Hydrolocked!! Got it right off the bat.😁 And Mower Medic is cool. Donyboy is very good as well. Oops, almost forgot Steve's Small Engine Saloon. One quick tip. Use a drain pan whether outside and especially inside. You don't want to kill your grass by draining fuel on it, and you don't want raw gas on your work bench. Could accidentally ignite if there's a spark of some kind. Gas fumes hang low to the ground and hang around even on a work bench, and ya never know. Good vid. Like school. Stay safe.👍

Cousin bought an old mid to late 80's early model Stihl 021 saw. It ran, but not well. Changed the fuel line, put a modern style 250 tank vent on it, then looked at the carburetor. WT-215, the metering diaphragm was put on upside down. Gasket was glued to the top plate, diaphragm was still good, but the gasket needs replacing. I've been through carbs, refurbishing them, never seen that before 🤣. Buying a K20-WAT rebuild kit today for it. Afterwards, it should run like new as the cylinder and piston look practically new and it has a LOT of compression. There's also a carb adjustment kit on Amazon for around $20, has every driver for carb screws, even a Stihl flat screwdriver, picks and brushes as well as two metering lever height gauges for Walbro and Zama. I used the Zama gauge on a brand new, from Stihl FS 56 RC-E carburetor, the needle lever was so low, had to bring it up.

That engine was what is called "Hydro locked" an engine that can't turn over due to the cylinders being filled with a liquid.

This can result in twisted and bent articulating rods in lower cylinders. Always turn the prop by hand before starting a radial! 😁

Yes. Last year my brother 5yr Tanaka did it carb was leaking gas in the engine, He took his to the shop. The same week mine started doing it. I use mine commercommercially. Mine was 6.5yrs. The dealer doesn't sale or service them where I bought them at. I replaced the carburetor. Running like a champ now. He got his back not fixed & the guy charged him somewhere near 85 bucks with brand new wrong spark plug. I changed his carb too. Wouldn't pull because spark plug was too long hitting the piston. I took my plug installed it in his, 1 or 2 pulls it starts. I did it for free

Remember, she has to break it down so people that wouldn't know what hydro like is. I raced boats for decades, more than once it blew over backwards while topped out, engine went under twisting close to 10k rpm, rods looked like a lightning bolt qll bent and crooked, crankcase and block was full of spider web cracks, fuel pump, carb and ignition was all that was salvageable off them

I usually take a picture both before and during disassembly which helps with the reassembly process.

I have that same blower ,bought it at Runnings for my Xmas present. Makes a great turbocharger for getting a brush pile to burn 🔥 down with some extra heat.

For carburetor adjustment screws with rounded off heads, try using a short piece of vinyl tubing with an ID slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw head. Heat the tubing in hot water and stretch the ID just enough to wrestle it on to the screw head. When it cools and shrinks down, it will grip tightly enough that you should be able to turn it. In a pinch, this tubing can be clipped with just enough to grab on to and left on the screw for later adjustments.

With my $7.50 Auction Homelite antique I cleaned the Walbro carb, replaced the fuel lines and paid $8 for a new gas cap, and added the $44 Shindaiwa 400 Speed Head and I’m rocking and rolling the weed whacking now. Had a similar problem with my SH86 however it happened while running. It turned off 2 different times and was basically locked up. First time I found a bolt backed out that mounts the engine. It got jammed into the back of the blower wheel. The second time it happened on the other side of the engine jammed against the flywheel. Both times all it took was putting the engine mounting bolts back in. Also found a couple other bolts loose. So if you have this problem best to tighten both sides.

That was pretty cool of with the blower and stuff I never thought about the diaphragm things like that getting stuck and junk I have mentions sometimes about leaving them in the heat or out in the sun is not good
