***ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
This Stihl MS 180 handle replacement job was difficult. It was my first time tearing down any type of chainsaw. The tear down wasn't hard, the difficult part was removing the caps to get the broken handle removed from the chainsaw.
I accidently broke the Stihl MS 180 handle while taking a tree down. I had a rope tied to the base of the tree and was pulling the tree with my ATV when I hit the chainsaw with the left wheel, cracking the handle.
I didn't like how it felt while cutting wood with the Stihl chainsaw with the broken handle. It felt flimsy and unsafe.
I really like this MS180 chainsaw and wanted to fix it properly.
I'm not a professional small engine repair man, and I made a couple mistakes by removing 2 of the rubber mounts that hold the handle on, but I managed to get the job done.
I wanted to share this tutorial on this Stihl MS 180 handle replacement in hopes that it will help someone else. It will help you with what to do and more importantly, to avoid the mistakes I made. After all that's how we learn right!

Tip - I Just changed the handle on my MS180. After you remove the plugs from the rubber grommets and the throttle assy. You can just leave all the grommets in place and move the bottom front grommet from the engine ( leaves it in the handle ) and the other 2 remove the handle from the grommet ( leaving these 2 in the engine ). I used an easy out to grab the plastic slug that locks the grommet in on the handlebar and slide it out then the grommet came out of the handle easily. Inserted the grommet into the new handle, pushed the plastic slug ( greased ) into the grommet with an Allan key till it was home. Greased the rubbers and then fitted the handle bar back onto the engine in the same way. Then reassembled the rest. Now that I have it worked out i think it would day 20-30 min max to change the handle now. I must also note that I use WD40 ( CRC ) to lube the gromments before handle removal and grease before assy. Hope this helps Pete

You missed the most important part in this video and that was how did you reassemble those grommets into the handle? so I did not remove the grommets from the main body, but I did remove the grommet from the lower portion under the chain. My new handle came with new grommets but not new plugs. Anyway, my process for reinserting the new handle was basically as follows. The Gromit on the lower portion under the chain was relatively easy to put in, and I started by inserting the new handle portion on that which you could do pretty easily. Lubricated the grommet with some oil, figuring that these were all oil resistant because oil gets everywhere on these things. Then I try to insert other two grommets sort of one at a time using a screwdriver to flex them in place but that didn’t work. So I got them approximately lined up and then used a large parallel clamp made of wood, an old one, and applied for some pressure to lower the throttle handle. that didn’t work so I started at the top one and was able to snap that one in the clamp carefully. Then I followed with the one. Then it was easy to finish the assembly. Hope this helps.

Yes I was going to ask how it got broken. Great job replacing the handle. I can see where it would get a little tricky. Thanks for making the video so I have something to go by if I ever have to do this. I guess the main thing I learned was to make sure I don't accidently run over my saw.

I was felling a small, decayed tree, got my blade pinched, and ended up dropping the tree on my saw (oops) and broke the handle, leading me to several of these videos. This video is really well made, but after doing mine, a huge piece of advice to anyone tackling this task... Get yourself a small syringe and fill it with a 50/50 mixture of dish soap and water. Remove the plastic caps, and then pry the side of the rubber grommets away from the handle and squirt the soap mixture all around. Instead of pulling the grommets out of the saw and handle, just pull the handle off the grommets (you can use a flathead screwdriver to help push the grommets all the way through if you need to). You can even cut the handle so you can pull it straight away from the saw (although mine was already broken so I didn't need to cut it). I mean, you are replacing it anyways so who cares if you destroy the old one? I was able to pop the handle off in about 5 minute without destroying any of the rubber grommets. The hardest part was that the lower grommet came out of the saw all on its own and I had to work it out of the handle. Every video I watched complained about how much of a pain it is to remove, but it was super-easy.

not many people are saying this but the rubbers are meant to stay in the mounts! and pry handlebar over the rubbers! they don't need to come out of the saw housing! to remove the handle bar! pry bar over the tops of the rubbers after removing the caps!

yeah I wish I read this before shredding one trying to get it out of the body. As mentioned above, don't try and remove from body, leave there and pull the handle off leaving them in place

Looked like a big job. Where is your dealer located? My Stihl dealer sucks here , they honestly don't have a clue. They can't even fix anything at this place they have to send to their other shop....so frustrating. They just want to sell you stuff. Thanks for sharing

If you replace the rubber mounts you will have to remove the motor to pull the plastic off of the upper mount to do it right. I am in the reassembly of a 180 right now.

Interesting video Roland. If I ever get up to Canada to visit my daughter and her husband, I definitely want to hook up with you. She's in St Catherine which is in your neck of the woods isn't it?

I just did this to mine, to all of 15 minutes, i fugured out that if you push the rubber grommets in through the handle, they pop right out,yu can remove the handle and use wd40 and the grommets popped right back into the new handle. Took longer to sharpen the blade than replacing the handle.

The hard part was as you say taking the plugs out of the vibration rubbers. Well that was easy the part I found difficult was removing the old handle from rubbers. Get a small screwdriver or to and work handle off them. Started with bottom forward rubber but the rubber came out attached to handle. Then prise off the top one and last the bottom rear. The rubber attached to the old hand I just busted the handle and it fell out. Then put rubber inside the hole from rear and work it into the hole screw driver fingers a bit of spit it will pop back in. There is a white plastic bottom to the rubber that will be closest to engine. I will get back to you when i fit new handle. Aussie Mate

I used a knife and screw driver. I ruined them and bought new plugs. It's not an easy job.

He rightly didnt show because if you take them out like i did, itd be a 50 min video. The upper grommet that plugs in against the head requires removing the motor assembly to get the rubber back in the plastic retaining plug. Hopefully you did as other commenters stated and dont remove entire rubber grommets unless theyre destroyed
