When I was younger, in my teens in the eighties, I started my dad's Poulan chainsaw the same way as you did. I was much stronger at that time than I am today. No, for many years. Yes, I continue to have all my fingers and limbs. I had so much fun using it to cut wood on the farm my family lived on. That property was sold possibly more than 5 years ago. Dutch people currently live there. I have so many interesting stories from that place.
Well I just purchased the Stihl ms400 CM chainsaw. I asked my dealer about the 500i. I was told that he had no idea when he was going to get them in and not to take any orders for them. I told him to put me on the list anyways when I picked up the ms400 c. That was 3 months ago. Keep up the great videos my friend Piqua Ohio here.
thank you sir! Appreciate the support! I would love to get the MS 400i maybe for my next saw!. Yea I would put your name on several list at different shops if there is no deposit. The dealer told me the some of the 500i part are made in Ukraine so issues getting supply. He said they usually get 1 at a time. crazy. Ohio must be getting cold now stay warm!!
Had my 500i for 12months now, and put about 52 gallons of fuel through it, been a great saw running 25inch Bars, and sometimes a 36inch . just keep them small bolts nipped up holding them dogs on.
Sidney Ohio Ace Hardware has a 500i on the shelf if you’re still interested. I went in yesterday to see if they had a 400cm & they did not…not yet anyway
If I didn’t do all my own maintenance and repair, I would have bought a 500i. I believe they are a great saw. I just like the basic carb set up of my 661 Mag. If firewood/tree was my main income, I would own one. In the words of BBR, standup and buck! Cheers. P.S. please clean up the cans before the wind makes them someone else’s problem.
That is true! the new saws are harder to work on. nothing like the old saws! i do most of my own maintanece but if that carb goes i will be lost lol. haha I like BBR! also don't worry about the cans lol I clean them up regularly (they are worth money) plus I have 100 acres they wont be anyone else problem but mine.( gotta give the boys a couple cold beers when they come help me split firewood all day). thanks for the comment!
Love my 500i ... I'm currently running a 24 inch light bar but I wanna get either a 28 or 32 inch light bar..My back can't take bending over anymore so it's stand up and buck time for me... Best of luck with the new saw and Merry Christmas
That's true I have never cut with a long bar like that but I guess it would save your back from the bending. At some point I will get a bigger bar for this saw for bigger stuff and milling but I'm having too much fun with the 24 inch bar screaming lol lots of power. thank you sir! you have a merry Christmas as well!
@@backwoodshomestead I am 6’ and use a 28” on my 500. Love it! Very little to no bending. 20” light 04 narrow kerf on my 261 (.325 low pro) and it’s a great saw for smaller wood and light! My 661 and 881 don’t get used very much and my 461 is a tank but the P/W of the 500 I pick it up the most of I need something bigger than the 261.
The only issue on my 500i was the lack of oil to the bar. I pushed the stop pin down on the oil pump and drilled out the oiling holes in the bar to the size on my 201 as the bar was running very dry due to the oiler holes blocking up constantly.
Saw a few comments on here about breaking saws in. I asked the dealer when I got mine and they said just make sure it’s warm and then get it into some bigger hardwood and keep it loaded. Broke mine in on 18” plus ash.
Haha not sure how I feel about that advice. I should ask my dealer see how that compares to other dealers. you broke a brand new saw? on break in? what type of saw?
I suspect this is true but I mostly worry that they don't pre run "under load" from the factory. But I agree they probably know that people run them HOT out of the box. lol
@@backwoodshomestead yeah I doubt they have some guy out the back of the stihl factory cutting rounds with everyone's saw too 😂 they are probably just idled on the production line for a tank of fuel.
I just bought one. So far, I've cut up about a third of a logging truck load of Doug fir. The 500i is okay, but it's balky when restarting after use, which I hate. Not sure this saw is any better than my two beloved 044 Stihls that I logged with in the '90s. Not super impressed, yet.
Interesting! you always got to wonder why they would mess with a good thing. no school like the old school. it defiantly is bulky. your arm feels it after a few tanks. time will tell.
Not to be negative here, but those boots are not great for this job. One slight touch and those rubber things are gone to the skin. Also a big round falling accidentally on your feet would crush your foot. The tops need to be sealed so you're not walking in fine dust packed into your socks all day. Nice saw though. Good exercise.
Breaking a chainsaw in from brand new is an easy process you take it easy for the first couple of tanks of gas about 2 to 3 tanks of gas you give it about half throttle through the log 🪵 and let the engine warm up before you start cutting that’s what we did when I got my MS 261cm about a little over five years ago but I guess every process is different but that is what we did on my saw
interesting I have always heard not to run saws or other 2 strokes on half throttle. I was always told full or nothing. i need to do more research haha! appreciate you sharing your experience. only time will tell if something works!
I google translated your message. he said "Hello, sawing aspen with such an expensive saw is not an indicator, it is a test for 180." I am not cutting aspen... I am cutting maple and ash. Its okay I remember when I didn't know how to identify a tree haha. have a good one Cheif!
The $500 I cannot be the Makita '79 00 that's the truth this is the most overpriced saw for steel compared another German style of really quality they can walk the crap out of this song people out there I can do it I don't care about both sides I like them both but I do one thing in life price praise praise he's the 7900 is cheaper than $100 in the do this as a German saw it is people have to understand something life the truth
the Makita 7900 is not available in my area (not sold in Canada) but even if it was knowing Makita these days I would think twice haha. when you make money from a tool/saw saving $100 is nothing. with a better saw I can make the $100 or $200 back in an afternoon. If you use a saw to make money you should buy the saw that will work best for you and has local dealers for parts and service.
