The man known to history as Stilicho rose to power at the moment Rome’s empire began to fail for the last time. As a barbarian in the eyes of the Roman world, he could never become emperor himself, instead becoming the power behind the throne. Despite saving Rome from its most dangerous enemies, the jealousy of those around him eventually led to his downfall and execution, but Stilicho’s legacy would not be as a great general who went willingly to his death to avoid greater bloodshed. Rather he is known as the first of the barbarian generals who wielded real power behind a succession of weak Roman emperors, overseeing disaster after disaster, before the Western Roman Empire ceased to exist in 476 AD.

Always thought the executions of Stilicho and Aetius were the two events that sealed the fate of the Western Roman Empire.

I have always kind of thought it a tragedy but history wouldn’t be the same without it.

very good point that needs much further study but why do you omit the crucial word Christian Western Empire ? that in this same century had been LEGALISED FIRST by Constantine The Great with Edict of Milan that for first time made it illegal to kill Christians and secondly by Theodosius The Great in 380 AD

@@user-eu8ub9cm5t I think it's due to it not being used in history Both Roman Empires are Christians, so why call it Christian Western Empire

And majorian. I don’t think the empire was doomed until majorian was betrayed.

@@sergeantswiss2401 that is an interesting thesis. I mean the Empire didn’t die, just over there in the West, but I get what you are saying

Didn’t know about Stilicho. Thanks for the history lesson. Impressive man with an impressive long list of achievements ending with his execution. The disintegration of the Roman Empire is a sobering lesson that nothing is given and nothing is permanent.

Majorian's being betrayed by Recimer is the ultimate fate that sealed the disintegration of the Western Roman Empire.

Read the 2 volume set from Loeb Classical Library of the last great poet of the Western Roman Empire, Claudian. Among other things he wrote some great poems praising Stilicho. There was a general of the Eastern Roman Empire named Belisarius who also won great victories like Stilicho, whose life also ended tragically. Could this RU-vidr make a RU-vid video on Belisarius? When Stilicho was executed, sadly his son was executed at the same time since his son was considered to be a member of the Royal family who would be a threat to the current Emporer.

Belisarius was a great general when Justinian almost got the full Roman Empire back on its feet but was derailed by plagues, riots and a host of other issues. Certainly worthy of a video. We will look into it
