Hey There! Here we discuss and (recap) the reasons why a certain type of collector should not buy a vintage Rolex Datejust. I love the watch, though new collectors should know what nuances vintage watches include.
If you have not seen, my original video is:

You hit the nail in the head. Vintage Rolex watches, when you consider the costs to get it running well and to look good font cost a lot less than buying a pre owned modern piece. Plus, there’s a big risk right now on Frankenstein watches out there. I don’t see how there’s a ton of value in vintage watches anymore, def not the “insane value” Christian from Theo and Harris laughably claims.
@redatticus7606

The Value is a hype pull from the current steel models...now is a sellers market with bubble like conditions.....not good.....and John has just hit the nail on the head.....MOST people I know are not Rolex enthusiast, but want to enter into the club via a cheap 70s Rolex.....mostlt due to budget constraints

I dont think we will see datejusts become as collectible as vintage rolex sports models mainly due to their size and vast amount of referances that were produced. Their just seems to be 4 datejusts to every gmt or sub.

Gold in watches is by far the most expensive gold in the world. Buying new is bad business, however, they loose lots of price in a few years. I bought my 16030 Datejust 18 years ago and still enjoy it. Looks like new!! No box no papers and could doble the purchade price any time. I do not buy watches for selling them. Thank you for clarifying some points.
@johngentile6814
@johngentile6814 5 лет назад
the points you made can be made with any vintage watch -not just rolex. Vintage Omega, JLC, IWC GP, etc can all have similar problems to what you have discussed. You need to know the seller and have to get the watch checked our prior to purchase.

Depends, which requirements do you have? I like vintage, and would chose vintage, but only if you can live with the nuances mentioned. Otherwise buy new as possible :)

For SS and TT Datejust models, they began switching crystals to sapphire in 1985- so you should shoot for that time frame.

Some of us like to have a birth year watch and a vintage DJ is a nice Rolex to have if you are looking for something in the 36-40 mm range that is versatile to be worn for different occasions. The OP and Air King also were on my radar, but I wanted to have the day on the dial.

So I just bought a cool silver dial smooth bezel 1600 and by the prices they have now, I am sorry JP, I don't think there is many people regretting their purchases. Prices go up because people love them and of course because anything new is much more expensive. However, information about servicing and what to watch out for is very much appreciated. Can you please make a video asking vintage explorer 1 owners to sell their pieces? :))))

That is the point. Just not worth it. And I love the look, and the history, and everything else. Still, there is no logical reason why a such outdated case and movement should cost 3-4 k. These old Rolexes were tool watches back in the day (which is what Tudor is now). An old tool watch over 4k? Madness.

I didn’t hear anything controversial. I bought one vintage Rolex Sub. It gave me so much trouble, I flipped it for a modern Omega PO. I appreciate vintage watches owned by other people. I will stick with modern, more accurate watches. Thank you for a thoughtful video filled with great advice!

I have one too and have no rattle or other problems. But I had some polerouters and had one that had the same problems. I send it maybe ten times to service to fix the rattle and it was impossible. I agree with you on that possible problems on vintage watches and the safety of new watches at 100%. I searched for two years until I bought mine.. So my recommendation is: buy the best example you can find and go and inspect the watch before buying. This will come at a cost but saves one from Movement problems that almost can‘t be fixed.

Your point seems easy enough to grasp, don’t know why people don’t get the point. I am a watch enthusiast and I do love some vintage watches, but I’m not knowledgeable enough to appreciate them for what they are! I’m going to be happier in the long run just buying new! Thanks John!

My concern with vintage watches is in the summer. which here is over 110 Fahrenheit with at least 50% humidity and i am not sure if most DJ can handle it or not. but i would consider buying a newer DJ or OP

Great point. I've seen customer watches that have fogged up from very little moisture, so this technically could happen. Though, I live in Miami which gets quite wet and have not had it happen to a vintage watch.

John - You make some very valid points not just about a vintage Datejust but about vintage watches in general. They have their charm - and often can be found at reasonable prices - but they come with their challenges, quirks, and disadvantages, which, I think you explain objectively and fairly. Another honest video. 👍🏻

@JohnPWatches
@JohnPWatches 5 лет назад
Around 30 years is vintage. If the production year is not available, like a brand that does not tie serials to production year, then if the model was made at all exactly as configured past 30 years. Subs, in my experience, have weathered and aged a little better. They are created for sport and durability, whereas datejusts were really engineered as dress watches.

I have my vintage DJ because it was my grandfather’s. Doesn’t really rattle except for the bracelet, although I love the sound. The dial is perfect for the age (1974). The only problems are having to service it (although the 1575 movement is a real workhorse) and the overpolished case, which isn’t so bad. I have a 2009 Explorer I, and a GMT Master II and a Submariner no date from the early 2000s, and I intend on buying a 1990s DJ at some point. I hate the beefier cases on post mid 2000s Rolexes though.

It’s difficult for me to suggest any vintage watch as an option for owning one watch. The one vintage DJ I’d suggest is the Rolex 16030 since it uses a modern movement (3035), despite being 30 years old. As mentioned, biggest issue would be the fragile Acrylic crystal and questionable water resistance.

Great video! I though your message on the original video on this topic was pretty clear. I own 3 Rolex watches and I considered buying a vintage model next, however after hearing your points I've changed my mind and will go modern. The last thing I want is to spend more money right after I buy a vintage Rolex to have it serviced so it looks & operates decent at best. Hearing any rattling at all would drive me absolutely crazy, I'd rather not even deal with it. Again great video, I'm a new subscriber keep the content coming.

First off I can get a Rolex fully refinished & serviced for under $350 by a master watchmaker. Secondly yes the market is going crazy right now because retards are paying tens of thousands for a stainless steel shitmariner. And last but not least you can still get a 1601 with the bracelet for under 2 grand if you know where to look. And honestly, I'm so tired of Rolex, hell I own 4 of them. Right now is the time to buy Omega & Zenith trust me. Especially vintage Speedmasters & El Primeros.
