If I Could Only Own 1 Watch - The Perfect Do-It-All Rolex: Datejust vs Explorer

As I mentioned in a recent video, I'm done with Rolex. I don't plan to purchase a new one anytime soon, mainly because there are already multiple Rolex watches I love in my collection-most importantly the Rolex Explorer (ref. 114270) which I consider the perfect, do-it-all, any situation watch that works with almost every sartorial selection. However, as my Explorer is currently away for servicing, I've been reacquainted with an old flame-a classic Rolex two-tone Datejust (ref. 16233) belonging to my wife-which has triggered so many memories, emotions and new discoveries. But compared to my current line-up which includes the Rolex Explorer, a Tudor Submariner (ref. 79190,) Rolex Day-Date (ref.18238,) Rolex GMT-Master II "Pepsi" (ref. 16710,) and my "Bluesey" Tudor Submariner (ref. 16613,) if I had to pick just one out of all of them, it would absolutely be the Datejust. Why is this watch so compelling? How does it compare to all the others? And if I could only own one watch for the rest of my life, why is it currently my number one choice? If you had to choose only one watch to wear for the rest of your life, what would it be? Please share in the comments below!

Perhaps an unpopular opinion but if i could only have 1 watch for the rest of my life it would more than likely be a G-SHOCK.

It's nice to have 1 panerai, I cartier, 1 rolex, 1 omega, 1 Breitling, 1 timex, 1 Casio, 1 patek.

I have an Explorer 1, 36mm and about 10 G-Shocks 😊 I made my choice a while back: One big hitter and then lots of far more affordable fun!

I think you've gone to a new level of almost philosophical watch reviewing, a level which other watch channels can only aspire to

I'd personally pick the Datejust! I've always seen it as the perfect daily and aspire to own a modern one in the future. The gold and steel with fluted bezel combo is just legendary.

I think I'd keep my Tudor Black Bay 58 if I could only have one. On leather, it can be suitably dressed up, but on steel is as tooly as you could want. Killer movement, strong WR, Beautiful vintage looks.

While most people will hate my so-called grail watch, I have selected the Bulova Precisionist as my daily driver. I have taken the time to analyze that I have an average 0.338 second response time with it, and while I do not assign any confidence to that level of accuracy in use, I use the thousandths of a second as a coin toss in timing splits. The watch is amazingly accurate. Beyond even my own expectations and capabilities for reasonable use. I have selected the model 96B349 as my choice from the many available in the line. It is a chunky piece of hardware, but I do not expect anyone to call it out as a baseball cap in a fine dining establishment. As I do not care for divers' watches, at least this one has a rated 300m for depth. I have no intentions to test it at all. What I do test and occasionally use, both personally and professionally, is the chronograph. This watch has the most smooth and pleasing seconds hand sweep, beyond the dreams of Rolex, and rivaled only by the Seiko spring drive. It pulls this off without adding the onus of adding the multi-thousands of manhours to drive the cost beyond Mars. I was so impressed with the quality of this watch, that I impulsively also purchased the Bulova Gemini model 97P158 for my wife. Interestingly it is the only watch that she had ever expressed an interest in, even over her collection of some 15 watches decorating her jewelry box. This watch accomplishes a feat, also in the sub $1K category, that I cannot refuse. It pleases her. Even beyond all of her corporate dress watches she has ever purchased for herself. Some of which were much more expensive than this one.

The 1 Omega watch is the No Time to Die SeaMaster… it’s sporty, amazing specs & heritage, light from the titanium, still flashy with the bracelet… yet, all the while muted as a watch and can go under the radar… this is the perfect 1 watch from Omega.

Nostalgia is a powerful emotion. If I could take a blue pill and replay 1992-1999 I would. Great video TGV!

Back in day that two tone datejust is THE watch many regular people would buy to celebrate a marriage, promotion, having a child/grandchild, starting own business etc. A proud moment you could walk into an AD, for that "made it" moment. Many a restaurant owner to trades people I knew would celebrate opening their business by buying this watch (and many are still wearing it day/night 30 years later). Despite seeming elegant today, due to its 36mm, its an incredibly solid watch. Datejust over an explorer all the way. Personally, if I had to choose one of my own watches as the only life, its a rolex 5700.

I received a blue dial , fluted bezel, DateJust as a graduation gift in ‘83. It still runs perfectly and looks great after decades of wrist time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your DateJust .

Out of my collection I would have to go with my Orient Ray 2 black. Got it almost a year ago and it rarely leaves my wrist. It has handled everything in my day to day and I can still look down and get the sense of enjoyment out of it as the day I first put it on

I love the idea of wearing one watch for years…I would choose and explorer but can’t afford it. I wear a Seiko Willard as a daily but other watches for the office. The Willard is perfect for around the house, yard work, hiking and biking.

Loved this video, especially at the end where you say, ‘enjoy these feelings, enjoy these watches’’. Can’t argue with date just or explorer being the ultimate one watch. I’d lean towards explorer. Im hoping to get a two tone soon. For now though, from my collection my G-Shock 5610 is the one watch that does it al for me. I bought it through pure nostalgia and it has never let me down.

I have to save this one for a quiet moment this evening. I’ve been an Explorer fan for a long time but the Datejust addresses different concerns, concerns I’m becoming interested in again. Fluted bezels really are really something spectacular - like a disco ball for the wrist. My favorite DJ36 always have the miniature Romans on the outside of the minute/seconds track.

You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned "nostalgia." I had a Rolex 1655 from 1978 until I sold it in 1997. And I immediately missed it. But I can't replace it as they are now going for $25,000+!!!! So I got a Steinhart Ocean GMT OLKO Special Edition and - every time I glance at my wrist - it's 1978 again. I LOVE the watch. You should review it if you can get one!
