This video shows many of the realistic drawing techniques and concepts I teach in an upcoming still life drawing workshop.
To draw this drawingI used Graphite, Charcoal, and Carbon pencils on white paper. I used a frisket mask to keep the subject clean and white while I rendered the background with charcoal and carbon pencils. Then, I sprayed the drawing with fixative to keep that area from smudging while I worked on the onions, garlic and paper bag.
One of the key things I like my students to learn from this one is the enormous impact of creating a graduated background. The darker background on the left side helps make the lighter areas of the subject appear lighter in that area. The lighter background on the right helps make the shadows of the subject appear darker on that side.
