Still MAJOR QC issues with new vinyl records | Ozzy Osbourne Ordinary Man pressing problems

I thought these sorts of problems were a thing of the past, but sadly there continue to be many quality control issues with new vinyl pressings. It was really bad 5 or so years ago, and seemed to be getting better. However, multiple issues are being reported with the new Ozzy Osbourne album, Ordinary Man (scuffed vinyl, warped, pressing problems, etc), and there are many other recent examples as well.

Hello, happy to see you talking about this problem. I bought (+/- 10 vinyls/ month) . I know now the good pressings plants and bad pressing plants. You should know that the worst pressing factories are currently in the USA. A simple rule to apply. Always prefer a European pressing to a US pressing to be sure to have quality. American pressings are mostly curled with marks, scratches on them. The best pressing plants worldwide: 1)Records Industry (Netherlands) (Its Music on Vinyl) 2) Optimal GMBH (Germany) 3) MPO (France) You should also know that the pressings at GZ media are often bad. I noticed that the quality of the PVC is often bad causing a deterioration of the LP after 4 to 5 listening, because these pressings plants hurry to press and the PVC is heated less quickly and less strongly. Thanks for You Vidéos !!!

You are correct, although RTI in the U.S has been stepping up their game and issuing better quality pressings. Which is encouraging as audiophiles are pushing for better pressing and it is having some effect.

I use to press records up until a year ago. Because of the trendies getting into vinyl QC has gone out the window because of demand at alot of plants. We had a good QC department thankfully. I bought the Jimi Hendrix Band Of Gypsys box set. QRP pressed it. I worked with a couple employees that worked at QRP. They said their plant was always putting out warped product. Of the eight records in the box set at least 4 had issues. One had some bad "dishing". I even had a MoFi record come to me with a kick warp. Unacceptable with the prices they charge. Those scuffs look to me like the pressing plates were scratched or at the very least very dirty. I used to take my watch off when installing plates. Even the lightest bump would cause a scratch. We had a couple Warmtone presses from Canada that were not made very well. Their Achilles Tendon was the sensors on the machines were always sending out false errors. Made pressing a nightmare.

Could you have a look at my comment I left above and tell me since you worked at a pressing plant if anything I mentioned could be causing the issues. I'm interested to know. I've never been to a plant. So I'm just making a wild guess.

@@goldenvinylspin Each Machine and Pressing Company is different. With the Canadian Warmtones. The pvc pellets are heated, pushed through an extruder into a puck form. Then a top/bottom label sandwiches the puck and moved into the press. Once pressed it was picked up and moved to the cutter where the flash was trimmed off. Then the machine moved it to a stack spindle. Every ten records were separated by a thin metal cooling plate. Test pressing we did it every five. All that was done by the machine. Although for some reason(maybe a computer glitch) sometimes it forgot to pickup a cooling plate. So we used to manually put a cooling plate on the stacks. From there they are cooled usually overnight. Then the QC guys would look at every record with gloves. And Yes, I would guess alot of the larger plants don't look at every one. After they passed QC they were sleeved(paper/rice or anti-static) and jacketed by hand with gloves. As far as blemishes/warps, so many things. Wrong heat/cool down cycle, Dirty pressing plates, scratched pressing plates, finger marks, bent cooling plates, bent shaft for cooling spindles, being packed in too small of jackets, shrink wrap putting too much pressure on jackets, putting too many records in a shipping box, not stacked properly on shipping pallets, paper sleeves rubbing during shipping, etc. Dont know if too much suction on the record when being pulled off the press would cause warping because the record has cooled down alot before moving to the trimmer, but I guess a possibility. But if it was warped a tad the Trimmer has two pads that press down flat on the record when trimmed. I do know sometimes the pressing plates would fail after a certain amount of records pressed(the center mounting hole/hub would break like a tearing fingernail). We had an air jet setting that could help with vinyl sticking to the plates on the press, but use too much air and that can cause other issues. That is probably the hardest aspect of pressing. You do something to fix one problem, but it could make another problem(s). Trying to find a balance in all the machines settings was very difficult. And then you get into colored vinyl or a PVC brand that makes the pressing process more difficult. I only did it for a short while. Not the dream job every vinyl guy thinks. At least with the machine I was pressing on. I was spending too much time diagnosing and adjusting/repairing the machine. It got old really fast.

I returned to vinyl about 5 years ago and accepted that sometimes you get scuffed or warped vinyl or some lousy pressings, hey that's the way it's always been, I remember in the 70,s taking Dark Side of The Moon back 6 times before I got a listenable copy (and the 7th one wasn't perfect). Unfortunately approx 50% of the vinyl I have bought in the last 12 months have had unacceptable faults and been returned to Amazon UK or my local record store here in Liverpool. The guys in the store raise their eyes up to the sky when they see me come in holding their store bag with a vinyl in it. I,m not super fussy I,m just like everyone else who wants a quality product for a premium price. I have now made the decision to go back to compact discs because vinyl is just not worth the price or the hassle of the returns. I,ll still watch your shows though Frank, love em.

I seemed to have this problem about four to five years ago. Though it seems that the new vinyl I've been getting in the past year or two has been problem free. When researched, it went to come down to two issues. First, the staff pressing the vinyl, lack of experience. All the old guys had retired. The second, the plants have old equipment (no new machines had been built since the 80"s) that keep breaking down,. Which means tighter deadlines, that causes the factories to reduce the cool down and pressing time of the vinyl. Also they don't apply the mold release agent frequently enough.

There's plenty of European grey market pressings of music where the copyright has expired, those source their master from crappy digital sources. Copyright expiration isn't a thing in other parts of the world though, preventing every random John Dough from grabbing some quick cash on low quality crap. Luckily there are lists of those crappy labels available on the web by searching for: "European grey market releases" It has been going on for a while now, but the issue is also becoming more and more common with CDs.

Almost every single new pressing I've gotten in the last few months (about 9 or 10) has had off center spindle holes. The distortion is audible on many of them because I listen to a lot of electronic music and it's very easy to hear when a note is out of tune.

The crazy thing for me is that the used records I buy sound better than a lot these modern pressings. I remember the variability in 1980s vinyl quality, I don't think we often returned albums because the wonkiness was just sort of accepted. Then you'd get a great pressings of Pink Floyd The Wall and go 'whoah!' because it sounds SO beautiful compared the the LPs made with worn out stampers, recycled vinyl, pressings with coning, off-centre holes and other issues. Albee213 what’s not possible? CDs have a bigger dynamic range but they don’t have more resolution. There is information beyond the CDs capability of 22kHz on a record. You can debate whether it is necessary or not but that would be a different argument.
@Albee213
@Albee213 4 года назад
@@trueaudiofiles8453 I cant argue with what people think sounds better. I collect all music and love records, I just want people to understand the facts. CD/Digital samples and stores a wave form digitally and then reproduces it perfectly. Yeah it does not capture the highest frequencies above 20khz, but most people cant hear them, and most devices cant reproduce them. And even if we could hear them it would literally be noise and its very low db and once again make it renders it useless. So anything below 20khz is as a technical scientific measurement, superior for digital formats. Its all analog, digital just stores the information digitally and that's not much different than how tape stores sound as frequencies that are sliced up along tape. For tape to have a frequency response of 25khz it slices the audio into 25,000 slices across the tape over what ever measurement.
@trueaudiofiles8453
@trueaudiofiles8453 4 года назад
Albee213 I don’t think we need to go too deep on here about digital vs analog because quite frankly it’s not appropriate and really unnecessary. I am quite aware of everything you mention above it’s just that it boils down to people’s preferences not which one is technically superior or not. That brings us down a rabbit hole that religion and politics does and we don’t need to go there.😎

I think Ozzy's camp knew the pressing had issues. I received an Email from his website where i ordered my copy. It was the Limited Edition pressing that came with a signed Litho. It stated that my package would be shipping soon and to be "understanding" if the litho and record came in less than Mint condition. Actual words from the email. It may have just been covering themselves if the litho got bent or smudged. But i think they knew there were issues.

I suspect that the quality control problems stem from the fact that vinyl record production (at the pressing plants) almost ground to a full stop for many years after CD's took over. So when new pressing plants emerged and old ones ramped their production back up they didn't have the expertise to ensure that their pressings were of the same high standard as before. I don't think it's carelessness or cost-cutting. Just lack of experience is producing top quality product. I think this will improve with time, provided vinyl doesn't die off again DUE TO the lack of quality control now. I did have some quality issues back in the 1970's when a lot of record companies were using regrind (old records ground up, label and all, and reused to make new records). I hope that using regrind is no longer a thing. Also; does the Ozzy album have more than 25 minutes or so per side? If they tried to cram a lot of music on each side (so as to avoid issuing the album as a double vinyl release) that might account for the low volume level of the pressing and hence the audible background thumping.

I work in a production factory. They are constantly messing with our process. We press hard board and it's hard for them to get a consistent mix, and our plant has been running for 60 years. I guarantee the problems are a mix of everything you just said. Lack of experience and keeping cost down are the main culprits. Not enough quality control and a rush to production. They have to get the science right or you will have a flawed product. They are learning this stuff on the go, from old recipes. The best guys that did it for years are retired or dead. They will learn to put out a good product or people will ditch vinyl, What's the point if it is shit.

Hi Frank. Vinyl QC issues with US pressings seem to go back a few years. I recall the major problems people had with US pressings of the Beatles stereo vinyl box back in 2012. Rainbo was the plant involved. The quality problems were frequent with that release. I managed to get a German pressed set. The subsequent Beatles Mono vinyl box was pressed exclusively in Germany for the world. It appears a lesson was learned and since then the recent Beatles remixed 50th Anniversary vinyl reissues have thankfully all been German/EU pressings. Love your channel mate 😊

I agree the amount of pressing defects is totally ridiculous. Also the trend toward heavyweight vinyl (which does absolutely nothing to improve sound quality) contributes to the problem. The heavy vinyl shifts around in the mail and gets scuffed and it also cuts through the sleeve/jacket during shipping. Back when I bought records in the the store I rarely had a brand new one with seam splits and sleeve rubs. Now I return records for seam splits constantly.

As an old guy, it brings back memories of all the frustrations I had with vinyl back in the sixties and seventies, and explains why the compact disc was hailed as such a “savior” to recorded music. I'm noticing on new US presses of releases by Sony will have issues. I had bought a reissue press of Jeff Buckley's Grace album (it really should be a double vinyl given the album is over 50 minutes long but I digress) and it had some pitting in the lead-in and a slight warp. On quiet passages, there's a touch of surface noise but it's not THAT bad. We also bought the 1st Stranger Things OST (covered all tracks played during seasons 1 & 2). On the whole, no warping but surface noise for sure. Also, the inner grooves seem to have some Wow & Flutter issues... the tonearm seems to VISIBLY sway on Africa. Thankfully I only paid $24 for the double vinyl @ Target but my point was this was also a SME release. Any other label (WMG, Universal, EMI) hasn't presented any issues yet. Keep in mind, these are US presses. My son bought Skunk Anansie's Paranoid & Sunburnt....UK remaster press and it sounds amazing....no issues whatsoever.... In summary, it's a combo of things. There needs to be better QC at the plants and better handling procedures by the retailers that carry them

Been seeing these issues with roughly 50% of vinyl purchased in the past 5/6 years, quality control at some plants is shocking & given the price of some of these releases I'm amazed at how many still use those crappy die cut paper inner bags when poly lined would offer far better protection. Called out one label who seemed to produce crap pressings 80% of the time & was told 'shit happens' blaming transit movement from plant to label to customer.

So I just took a chance and ordered a used one and got a nice copy. I had a problem with Bon Jovi 7800 as well, multiple new copies from amazon. Honestly, I have all of the vinyl need. I'm not much on getting new music on vinyl, it's really the older music that I like to have on vinyl, so I think I'm done with vinyl, I'm tired of getting older records with skips as well. The thumping noise can be caused by locally heating the vinyl record after pressing. You should look for uneven reflections to see it. It means that the vinyl is thinner at certain spots of the vinyl. If you have an old trashy record, you can 'replicate' this issue for experimentation by pointing a very hot hairdryer on just 1 spot on the vinyl, while the vinyl is laying down flat. That way the vinyl will not warp, but there will be a deformation in the vinyl which can be seen by looking at the reflection. I think it has to do with record pressing plants speeding up the process because of the large cues for pressing records. This might happen when either vinyl doesn't have enough time to cool down after pressing or when the heat of the steam generator is too high. I recently had exactly that type of deformation on a vinyl of Chet Baker - The Thrill is Gone Also made a very low frequency thumping noise, somewhere at the middle of the b side.

Quality Control? Years ago I was collecting a series of two-disc albums in the "Motown Gold" series issued by EMI-Bovema NV, Holland. Volumes 1 through 4 were okay but when it got to Volume 5, The first copy had foreign matter contamination of Record 2/Side 2 Tr.1 close to the intermediate runout groove between Tr.1 and Tr.2. I took it back to the store and it was replaced, the replacement copy had EXACTLY the same problem. Returned it and the third copy had..... Yep! EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM! All three copies had the fault, all on Record two, side 2 Track 1, close to the intermediate runout groove between Tr.1 and Tr.2. I gave up on Volume 5. If I'd have been able to get that set from EMI-Electrola GmbH, Germany, that issue with Volume 5 would NOT have arisen. I blame EMI-Bovema for that fault as their product is on a par with Philips, UTTER GARBAGE!

Most of all of these comments are spot on. I will add this as a major cd collector as well as vinyl that new CDs and even a few DVDs/bluray are also starting to suffer from QC issues too! In the last few years a few brand new sealed CDs I’ve purchased have big scratches right across the CD like someone literally took a sharp object and scratched it. Also circular scratches are becoming more prominent but that’s due more to bad digipacks and the cd spins on the center peg as it’s being shipped from the warehouse. Also I’ve actually seen finger prints?!? Basically what we have my fellow physical media collectors is streaming is the main form of music and film consumption so manufacturers are spending much less time and effort into the making of the product because in the grand scheme of things such a low percentage of the population are actually buying it. It’s extremely frustrating as someone who still loves physical product but unfortunately it’s probably just going to get worse. The biggest issue with vinyl is it requires a lot of care and attention especially when it’s being made and that has obviously just gone right out the window.

Frank I myself ordered through Amazon a month ahead of the release date and received it 1:00 Pm release date. I was excited about opening my first brand new Ozzy vinyl record ever. Bought his CDs before so when I placed it on my turntable it had no warps so that was good. I have all of Ozzy's regular albums on vinyl before 1995 and they all sound excellent so my expectations were high. Terrible noise ticks and pops. So Amazon sent #2 and it sounded cleaner but the vinyl had the worst looking defects I have ever seen. There were dimples on one side and indents on the opposite side. The rest of defects looked like the vinyl was pressed on scales of a fish or similar markings almost 2/3 of the album. I'm awaiting my 3rd Amazon order which should arrive today. But the story doesn't end there. The day of release I purchased the best buy exclusive. Happen to get the last one in Ft. Wayne. So when I picked it up I looked at it while standing at the counter and saw it looked like it had a possibility of being warped. They shrink wrap the vinyl so tight like u said it causes issues. He said bring it back if warped and you can exchange it. Well wouldn't you know it's cupped like a bowl. So placing it on one side the center is up so a clamp solves that but it is raised on the other side about 1/8 of an inch the whole way around. It plays best of the 3 but still has some rumble at the beginning. I think I'm going to wait for my 5th copy which will be the first deluxe gatefold pressing. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I might try to fix the marbled black white grey best but exclusive since it is so beautiful. Just really ruins the whole experience for me !! I agree it is a good album other than the last song ITS A RAID.

I'm sure someone has mentioned by now already, but if not here's what is causing the thump (for me) There's a very small surface bubble on the vinyl record. I just got my copy of Stranger Things 1&2 Compilation from AMZ, and on sides A/B there is a very small bubble. this bubble is on the same spot on each side of the record. It only causes the thump noise ever rotation and only on 1 song (for me) but it's very annoying because I bought that record because it's a great mashup of 80's songs. It happens on the last song on each side (I think) which is Sunglasses at Night (Side A) and Africa by Toto (Side B) super annoying bc as you say, we pay a premium and should receive primo product. Hope this helps others!

Same problem on several buys here. My take on it is PACKAGING, PACKAGING, PACKAGING. Back in the 80s records were pressed on much lighter vinyl and packaged in lighter-weight inner sleeves for the most part. Therefore, the disc didn’t get banged around as much in shipping and stocking. So now you have 180g vinyl discs sloshing around in a heavy scratchy cardboard envelope on their way to your turntable. Guess what? Scratchy scratch scratch. Cardboard is heavy and it’s like a sandpaper sandwich for your new record. This phenomenon has not once happened with any of my Abbey Road DMM Lab reissues - as in Zeppelin, Rush, The Beatles, etc. - because they all come packed in a padded smooth lined inner sleeve that doesn’t drag against the record.

I have 50 year old records that will continue holding up better than a lot of newer products. And then there is the over use of high gloss jackets; these are going to look terrible in a few years. Obviously, they just cut corners wherever they can as no one complains. Smart to buy where returns are easier.

I have heard of the pressing issues with Ordinary Man, so I just bought the CD and let it go at that. I think some of the issues stem from that mastering and pressing vinyl is a new skill set for the current engineers. They are familiar with CD and mp3s, so they have to learn the craft of pressing vinyl LPs. The scuff marks could originate from mishandling the lacquers or the metal stampers. From what I gather the heartbeat sound is from a problem with the cutting lathe in the mastering room. Some of those lathes are over 60 years old and are tired and need to be updated and replaced.

I don't buy very many new records (just basically Paul McCartney, the Stones and Lenny Kravitz). But I've had this issue on reissues (here's a point I don't see anyone addressing). As one example, I won't buy ANY record by Friday Music. I bought 4 of their Doobie Brothers 180 gram reissues and only ONE of them wasn't off centered! Because of these issues, I would think that record stores would have a field day with this. But there is still something to be said about getting your albums through the mail. This is especially true with limited pressings, records that can only be purchased through websites, and also if you don't live within a reasonable distance from a record store. The weather is another issue. If you live (and I know you're in Canada) where there is a lot of snow and cold, you may not feel like bundling up, getting in your car and driving to a record store--especially if you're only looking for one or two albums. I think the only real answer for this problem is better QC at the record plants. But this is not going to happen, sad to say, because of the costs involved and the demand for vinyl. And lastly, to those of you who have switched to CD because of these and other problems with vinyl: your time is coming, too. It's easily predictable that within a few years, CDs will have a resurgence just like what has happened with vinyl. And then, prices will go up, and you'll find quality has gone down as a result of this demand, too. And then, where will we go for physical music formats....
