Hey Bob.. Awesome job done... Now that's an informative video. tried playing the chord watching other videos, no success..This actually helped me play the chord easily.. Thanks. Keep up the good work going. Cheers!!
Hey Mayank, great to have you here and glad this mini series is helping! Yes, I'm trying to make this channel more like real lessons rather than just a demonstration sort of thing. Appreciate greatly your comment and good luck. If you like fingerpicking, check out this really easy song series ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R1d_vprBkTE.html Cheers! bob
Started a few weeks ago after retirement at 62. Purchased a well rated app course but have felt that my A, D and C chords weren’t getting any better. You’re very detailed instruction on C has bumped me from stagnancy in the right direction. So important to get the basics right to progress.
Hey Ned, great to hear from you and thank you for taking the lessons here. You are doing very well after only a few weeks and I'm glad the C lesson helped too. I have another video on holding the guitar (did this after this course) which is a big help for all chords as well: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0eNtyn783cc.html My channel here teaches mostly fingerstyle guitar for beginners and if you are interested, please do check out my playlists courses which are here: ru-vid.complaylists You will also see there the D chord lessons too. If you need any help with anything please let me know. All the best and happy pickin' !! bob
Bob, Thank you for the help this video provided. I am 52 years old and just now learning how to play. I recently purchased a Fender Strat and have been struggling with finger position. Tilting the neck up, moving the thumb further behind the neck, and learning proper position one finger at a time was key. I am two days in and looking forward to tomorrows lesson (Part 3). Jeff
Hey Jeff, glad that you are learning guitar! Wow, Strat... great guitar!!! Yea, at first all of these little rules make it possible to play, but as you get better and play more, you are going to find that the positioning and such is not that critical. I'm very happy that these lessons are helping! Keep up the good playing!!.. bob
Hey Duaine, thank you for taking the lessons here and glad that it helped! Yes, the thumb in the right spot really helps a lot!! Happy pickin and thanks again! bob
thank you for these lessons. .. I am just beginning and your method for learning C chord is perfect! Keep up the good work, Bob. I'll be following this till I can do this without looking 😄 Juliana in New Jersey
Hi Bob that’s no problem, I’m actually getting C now thanks to you, maybe not every time but I’m able to get it I’m trying to speed up my chord changes at the minute, C to D to G and a few others like Am Em and G7. It’s slow but it’s getting better can’t thank you enough for your help with C I don’t think I would have got it without you.
Hey Ian, really really happy this lesson helped. Much of what's learned on guitar is important to take things in small sections and move slow (which is actually a lot faster way to learn)... All the best and big thanks...!! bob
Hi Bob, Just finished this lesson & most likely will have to spend some time practicing…It's a hand killer for me, lol, & I keep touching other strings, so I guess I will move on to the next lesson After I get this Cleaned up. Thanks so much for your help..
Hi +Brenda Kopecky , yea, this is the hardest standard chord for most of my students (the F Chord is right there too). Make sure to arch your fingers, that's the big key to this chord... play on the tips of your fingers. Also try using a guitar strap or rest your guitar on your left leg. You can even get a foot stool for the left leg. All this stuff counts, if you don't do one, it won't work. whatever you do, don't get frustrated.,, go a little each day. .. if you're going to practice more, take a lot of little breaks. You will get this!!
Hi Bob, just started here. Struggling pain a little with ring and little finger place. But will follow your guide for sure as it is a great help but of cos it'll take some time. Thanks Bob.
Hi Beena, I'm glad you are working on this but not happy to hear that you are having pain. Here's another video that I made after these lessons that might help as well: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0eNtyn783cc.html One key (if you didn't hear it in these lessons) is to relax your hand and fingers. It's typically stress and lots of force used that cause the pain. First, relax your fingers and place them into position (with out pressing down). If you are holding the guitar properly you shouldn't be pressing really hard to get clean notes. Spend some time to just position the chord as relaxed as possible and get used to it. Then when you feel ready to press down, try just one finger. The proper technique alone and relaxation will make all the difference in the world. I hope this helps!! Happy new year Beena!!
loved ur step by step seemingly slow teaching but very essential nd letting us know our common mistakes..really made me feel so good when I could at last hear the clean tones.. was uplifting when I want to give up when my wrist nd finger hurts
Hi Anita, thank you for the kind words and it sounds like you are doing well with the playing. Always better to do a little each day so it doesn't get painful. Is your guitar hard to play?
Your manner of teaching is awesome. I'm an accomplished pianist and teacher. However my bucket list included learning to play guitar. I hope to go to jam sessions and such in about six months. Other videos I tried were so fast I had to keep repeating them over and over. I'm sure I'll learn much faster this way. Many many thanks.
Hey Carol,. so great to hear from a fellow musician and instructor! No doubt you are going to move at a much faster pace than most here but, your comment about going slow to move faster is such a great observation and one that I'm hoping others will take note of if they are serious about playing guitar. Hope you will check out the fingerpicking that I'm primarily teaching on the channel and hope you will keep in touch! Thanks Carol!! bob
Hey Rob, great to hear from you and yes, guitar is the ultimate test of a person's patience, as it can be so frustrating when you can't get things quickly. Just have to stay with it- and a lot of reps- hope you are having some fun as well with all this.. If you need help just let me know! All the best and thank you for taking the lessons with me! bob
@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Im actually a self taught drummer, since that seemed to be pretty easy to learn, was hoping itd be just as easy to learn guitar lol,,anyways,i just gotta be patient and this way is great in helping me learn a finger at a time instead of just trying to knock it out of the park from the start
Hey @@robmiller931 , this is great that you are a musician and drummer no less. I think that is the perfect background for guitar since it's all time based anyway. Wish everyone would study percussion first before playing guitar. I have a few drummer friends that also picked up the guitar (after becoming accomplished at drums) and they are all really good guitar players. Same will happen for you..
hi Bob, i do have really small finger so it is really hard for C cord but you are a best teacher. i will try really hard day by day. btw. i will take guitar class from senior school this fall~~ I always like to play guitar bc i am a drummer but never have been try it. Thanks again.
Thanks Bj, you have an advantage from playing another instrument... in fact, drummers tend to do well when learning guitar. Also think it's good to take as many lessons as possible, so happy to hear you are going to take guitar in school. All the best, and keep me posted with your progress!! bob
Hey Maddgun, thanks for taking the lesson and sorry for the delay, as it's busy season for musicians and I'm gigging a lot. Yea, this is a tough one, I think one of the most difficult. But get this and you are going to find all the other things easier. Guitar is about playing a song that has easy and hard in it... Hopegully with some playing, it gets easier... all the best and thanks again!! bob
Hi Bob thanks for your help I really appreciate it, I’m going to keep trying for the next week, if at the end I still am not getting it do you mind if I contact you again?
Hi Jan, I am sooooo sorry I didn't see your comment until now. :( I just found a whole bunch that were hiding on another page in my RU-vid settings that I wasn't aware of... ugh.. So it's been a month and how is it going with this? Yes to contacting me- any time! And I don't know how your comment ended up on this page but, now that I know where to look I will check back... all the best and thanks.... bob!
This is good for someone who has never played c chord but not great for someone who just struggles with it. I already know finger placement, I just cant get a clear chord no matter how much I try. It hurts my wrist.
Hi Dawn, thank you for writing to me and I'm sorry that this lesson didn't help so much. The good news however is, I am almost always able to help solve problems if you don't mind a little back and forth. So to start with, I would like you to watch this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0eNtyn783cc.html and see if anything here helps. There's multiple reasons why your wrist is hurting (it just shouldn't) but first I have to start ruling things out. If this video doesn't help then we can keep going until solved. I will be on the lookout for your reply. Besides the dreaded C chord- happy 2021!! bob
Hey James, great to hear from you. this is a customized 1977 Mossman Great Plains. There was a fire at the Mossman factory (I want to say maybe 1978 )and this guitar was there, but not damaged by fire. However perhaps from the heat, the top warped and so did the neck. I had a new fretboard and bridge. put on I use this guitar primarily for gigs these days.
Hi Bob you lessons are great but I’m still having troubles with my fingers hitting the nearest strings even when arched I think my hands may be too fat lol maybe the treadmill is needed before I will be able to get it 😅
Hey Ian, great to hear from you and thanks for taking the lessons. So quick question for you? Is 1 finger okay, or are you having problems with that too? Let me know and I will try to help you..!! bob
When I started playing c cord where kinda hard but they are not that hard. I find F cord a lot harder. It's bar cords and the B cord that are really difficult.
Hey Eddie, thank you for watching the video and yea, a lot of people have more trouble with the F chord for sure (depends on the person). Barr chords as you know another story!!! If you need any help let me know and I will do my best.... bob
@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons thanks Bob. Yes any help I can get on doing bar cord would help. My biggest problem is I have not practiced bar cord. I just started learning Guitar and have many other things to learn first. I am teaching myself I can't afford to take lessons. The internet is very helpful.
@@eddiepuddy4883 YES, RU-vid is just great to provide this opportunity for us! and like you say, so much to work on besides the Barr chords... actually I don't use them so much so no worries for now. Keep me posted okay? thanks Eddie! bob
Hey JB, thanks for taking the lessons here. Yes indeed, the arch and the angle..! I did another video after this series that is helpful too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0eNtyn783cc.html Wishing you a good 2023 on your guitar! bob
Hey Smokeycat, I'm really happy these lessons are helpful. Learning the C chord is not easy but you will be able to do it if you just work on it a little each day. What I recommend is to practice this in addition to any songs you are doing.. Just a matter of getting your hands used to it and be able to automatically go there... Wishing you a happy new year 2024... lot of guitar too!! bob
No I can get the first finger great it’s just the fourth string I keep touching the third string, I virtually have to get my thumb on the bottom of the neck to get a clear tone but then I can’t sustain the position I am using a small stool and resting on my left knee lol my guitar is virtually vertical
Hey Doug, e mail me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com and I will send you the the chord chart. But what song is is you want? let me know.. Thanks Doug! bob
hey bob.. I know its been a long time since this videos out so I'm not expecting you to see this but if you or someone else who knows could help me see's this I'm having trouble with muting or buzzing the 3rd string while playing C major. I'm pretty good about not muting the other strings but whenever I play C major there's still a buzzing sound of my middle finger touching the 3rd string. thank you in advance to anyone whos might help me out!
Hey Haunted953, thank you for taking the lessons here with me and here's a video that will help with this (but I do point some of it out in these C chord vids ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0eNtyn783cc.html the problem is you are not getting the correct 90 degree angle when pressing down, so the guitar neck has to be tilted upwards. It's a combo of things that all have to be correct in order to get the clear sounding chords without touching other strings. Follow all the steps and let me know if this helps- and thanks again ! bob.
@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons okay for sure. I’m still new to guitar so I’m letting my fingers rest for today haha. Can’t practice as much until they harden a bit. Definitely will check out the videos though! Thank you
Hey Walter, thanks for taking the lessons here and let me see if I can help. I am noticing you are on lesson 2 here and in lesson 3 with adding 3 fingers, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aF2rvqSBtLA.html this is my guess where you are having problems in the stretch. But ALSO (and this is VERY IMPORTANT..) please watch this video as this I'm sure is perhaps 99.9% of your problem, unless there's something that I don't know like part of your finger was cut off. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PAjXnxy1w6s.html this is all about body positioning and I go over this in this C chord series but I think this video goes into greater detail. Please watch and let me know if this helps! Happy 2020 year of the guitar!! bob
I'm asking about the guitar because I have a few students that needed a larger size guitar. I don't know what size your guitar is (how thin the neck is). I know this guy with the fattest fingers that has a wider neck sized guitar. Man can he play, but prefers the bigger sized neck. Let's rule this problem out first.
Hi Nantale Christine, I am imagining that you are now able to play the C chord (or some of it). I am wishing you all the best on your guitar and love you too! bob
Hi +gokunex3 Great to have you here! If you go to the end of this video 2 of How to Play a D chord, there is a link directly in the video. All you do is click on it and it takes you to lesson 3. Good luck with this and thanks again! bob
Didn’t work for me. :-( My finger pads always land on the string beneath whatever string I’m supposed to be playing, so that means muted guitar strings. I have to shape my hand like a contortionist to even come close to getting the chord and I know that’s not right. And my thumb ends up almost on the other side to even do it wrong, lol.
Hi Jacqueline, love to hear from people but hate it that this didn't work for you. So I have another video that I"m hoping will help. I made this one after the C chords series.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PAjXnxy1w6s.html. It's all about body positioning that enables the stretch and to be able to arch your fingers and play on the tips of your fingers. Try and let me know okay- will hold my breath and keep my fingers arched, oh, I meant crossed! bob
Hi Karynne, thank you for taking the lessons with me and glad you are playing guitar! So here's another video that I made after this series which has to do with the importance of body positioning. .ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PAjXnxy1w6s.html It will help stop the muting of other strings with having the proper angle with your fingers. All the best and hope something here helps!! bob
Hello To by, thank you for taking the lesson. So, I would like to help you but I first need to know what you mean by knuckle seeming waving? Please explain with a little more detail if possible and I will do my best to help. Thank you- bob
Acoustic Guitar Videos Lessons I meant its not parallel everytime I try to play with proper technique.. I guess it's my guitar size.. It seems for age 7-12 and also my fingers are 3.0-3.5 inches long.. so,the problem might occur to my stretching..
I wish I could see a photo or a video of what you are talking about- picture is worth a thousand words! Can you e mail me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com? I'm still not understanding what the problem is (I'm sorry!). Are you not able to play the C Chord or are the notes not coming out clear?
I would love to see what you are talking about. Any way you could e mail me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com and send me a photo of what you are talking about (just your left hand) or even a video? I'm trying to envision what you are talking about and can't imagine. It's really great that the chord sounds good and that usually means you are doing it the right way, especially for this chord.
Hey Samuel, glad the lesson helps. Yes, this was a giant problem and I had to go for speech therapy for two years. This was an older video and if you check out the newer stuff, I think you will see an improvement.
So frustrating I have spent so much time on this one chord listened to countless lessons and no matter what I do my middle finger on the forth string 100% of the time mutes the third string. Maybe that finger is just to big to play this chord, spent more time on this one chord than I care to remember.
Hi Ralph, there can be any number of things causing that 3rd string to mute- but the most likely cause is your middle finger not arched enough. This is difficult because if you have a hard time stretching your fingers to begin with and then place your ring finger three frets up on string 5, it automatically flattens that middle finger. Here's what I'd like you to do and if you could report back to me, that would be great.. What happens when you just play the two fingered C (index and middle on strings 2 and 4)? Is it still muting string 3? Let me know okay. Also and after I did this C chord series I have another video that should help with getting that C chord (and other chords): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0eNtyn783cc.html Keep me posted and don't give up- these things take time and reps- you will get it!! bob
@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Hi thanks for the response I'm not giving up I really want to be able to play bad. I only started a month ago but have not missed a day of practicing. I picked up the Em quick and that's as you know is using the 2nd finger with the third. Sometimes play the E clean as well and occasionally play the G clean. Yes when I play the two finger C the third string mutes as well. I have moved that finger around to every position possible to stop the muting but no luck. Resting on the left leg feels kind of awkward to me but I have trying that as well. Thank you for the help, I have even cut my finger nails short as well. I have practiced so much I already have developed some calluses
@@ralphsera1442 Hey Ralph, playing for only a month... this left hand takes a lot of time to get it coordinated, so I hope you can be patient with it. Is your thumb back in the correct position? Is your guitar neck tilted upwards? Are you playing on the tips of your fingers? Are your fingers arched? You know, If I saw what you were doing, I would be able to know what's wrong immediately. You can always send me a video of you playing (many students do that). Just email me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com . bob
Hey Gabe, Sorry that you are having so much trouble with this. Many times people learn on a cheep, almost impossible guitar to play and think this is what it's like. Maybe you meant to say "whoever made my guitar is a murderer" ... Before you give up you might want to try out some other guitars that are easier to play. I hope this helps... !! bob
No. I was referring to the instrument generally(guitar). What am i going with the left hand coordination. The fact that you have responded to my comment has removed all my laziness and procrastination. Thanks
@@gabesegun7966 Hey Gabe, the left hand is the part that most beginners have the problem with, and also changing chords. I don't know what style of guitar you are trying to learn but I have fingerstyle songs that start with one fingered chords. My thought is to get going with something as fast as possible, and slowly work your way up to the full chords. If you are interested but here's my most basic course. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R1d_vprBkTE.html&feature=emb_logo . There's a free study guide that goes with it as well and you can e mail me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com if you want that too. Thanks Gabe, have a great weekend!! bob
It is helping. I can do the C Chord now when I am fresh but get sloppy as my fingers tire. Speed on changing chords is not there yet. I have had my guitar 10 days so just playing the C correctly at all is a big win. Thanks
Hi Docota, I'm glad you are finding it easy. So many students when first starting find this chord near impossible. Thank you and happy guitar pickin' !! bob

Defiantly for beginners ONLY. Anyone with even a little experience will lose it 5 minutes into the fist video and there are three videos to cover ONE FREAKING CHORD IN ROOT POSITION.
Hey Mark, you are correct- this is beginners only. Title of video even has the word beginners in caps. Wishing you a happy Cdom5add13 and best to you! bob
Hey @, thank you for this and wishing you good luck as well. Problem with RU-vid is it takes forever to find the right instructor at your level and music style- there's so many! What type of music do you play?

Acoustic Guitar Videos Lessons - actually I play guitar and piano. Mostly piano these days. I’m 72. Started with piano when I was 7. After seven years of lessons I noticed that my best friend was always surrounded by all the girls at parties. There was seldom a piano around so I picked up a guitar and started a band. I’m left handed and learned on a guitar strung right handed. Yes, it’s possible. About 20 years later I decided it was time to try doing it right. So I got a left handed Strat and worked until I could play the Beatles, Stones and Eagles stuff I enjoy. I mostly flat pick but do some finger picking as well. Piano was my first love and still is. I play classical and rock. Chopin and Elton John. Music is important in my life. My three children all play. My daughter plays piano, guitar and Uke. My eldest son plays drums and guitar and uke. My younger boy plays cello and piano. How did you get started?
@ Nice to have someone over here with some multi-instrument music experience, and you certainly have a lifetime of it. I have no idea how you were able to change over the strings and maintain your sanity? Everything including the picking direction changes. Kudos to you for being able to make that adjustment! I had a band member way back that played a right handed upright bass left handed and one day he decided to change the strings to left hand. That was a couple days before a gig that didn't go so well. He kept hitting 4ths to start out every measure instead of the one- what a disaster. He ended up changing back and I think he's still playing right hand bass. Still looks screwy... Yea, the guitarist or the lead singer gets all the girls!!! ha ha... I'm a music producer and session guitarist but I love to teach. Started an advanced flatpicking channel back in 2012 but it went nowhere. A music bud of mine suggested beginner lessons and it took off. There's good and bad with it as it takes as you say a lot of patience whereas the advanced lessons you don't have to explain every little thing. Anyway, refreshing to chat with a fellow musician! Hope we can stay in touch- thanks Mark!! bob
