Still Wakes The Deep - Review After 100% 

Loved this game. Played it through in a single play session. Just under 6 hours for me

As a guy from Scotland, Glasgow the voice acting on here had me sooo happy all the way through.. soo much slang used and the deli very of words perfect. Also had some good big Scottish names as voice actors.

Love your content, Mort. I recently watched a video about how so many gamers struggle with committing to finishing games. Yet, you routinely beat games swiftly and thoroughly, and I know your ethic is inspiring for a lot of people. How you do anything is how you do everything. I think a great topic for a video would be about your perspective on how you complete so many games. I know you do it to stand out from other reviewers, but I wonder to what extent it’s become your personal philosophy. Raising a son, seeing things through, etc. Is it work ethic? Discipline? Was blown away by the voice acting in this game! Despite being very different games, it reminds me of how Xenoblade Chronicles and souls games tend to include a lot of British voice work, it’s great to hear.

OMG Mortim I work on oil-rigs in Scotland (and everywhere else in the worled) BUT I had never heard of this game and thanks to you I've seen it and cant wait to get home (from sea) and play it, ive also passed it onto my colleagueas so you have pushed this game to a lot of ppl :)

The voice acting in this game was outstanding, some of the best I’ve ever encountered. Being Scottish myself it’s not often we get to hear accurate accents by genuine Scottish voice actors. I imagine some of the slang may confuse some but it certainly won’t detract from the experience. Completed this in a single sitting (5ish hours) and thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. It’s on Gamepass so if you’re able to do so I’d definitely recommend giving it a go. Great work Mort, big respect for the quality content you consistently produce.

Makes a lot of sense to me to make a walking sim for a lovecraftian story : protagonists don't have much agency in stories about cosmic horrors, that's the point

I just finished Still Wakes the Deep. It's not groundbreaking. But I enjoyed the experience. It's kind of like Firewatch, except amazing graphics.

Definitely going to play it on game pass. The architecture of the oil rig seems to translate to game graphics really well.

Amazing game and story! There're many movies with the same premises, and getting to play the protagonist that makes you feel the suspense and horror makes it an amazing title!

Was looking forward to your review on this one. I'm definitely still interested but think it will hang out on my wishlist for a while.

Buggy indeed 😅 I got soft-lock in a mission and the last checkpoint is set after the bug The only option is to redo the whole game (Idk if you're talking of this kind of restart in your video) The Dev team told me that they're doing an update to fix that and being able to restart at the last scene But for now, I can't finish the game The Chinese Room one is one of my favorite dev teams, I'm used to having some issues and bugs in their games but nothing that prevents finishing them For a 4h - 5h game at 35 bucks, it’s sad to see this lack of polish for a game that is so linear 😕

Sounds like the perfect setting for this kind of story/game. So tempted to get it, but I figure I'll wait until the bugs are straightened out and at that point might as well wait for a sale. I'm betting this game will be just as good in a year or two. Bugs can really take me out of the mood in such an atmospheric game.

My major issue with this game is that even though the setting is well done but we never get to know what is this alien or creature that is taking over the rig or the lore behind it. Maybe they are looking for a sequel in which they will explain.

Really like the look/atmosphere of this and really enjoyed The Chinese Rooms previous work. Great honest review and I think for me it's a "wait for a sale" kinda game. I don't want to try and devalue anyones product or hard work but it does feel a little expensive for this type of game. £19.99 feels like my biting point and it's not like I don't have anything else vying for my attention at the moment with the biggest backlog I have ever known 😂 Keep up the good work Mort

Beat it in one go at 4 hours, loved the ever living shit outta the Voice Acting

Played this on Xbox game pass and funnily enough it has been the most enjoyable game I’ve played for a while. Horror wise it’s very light but the intrigue into what the creature is high. The ending was seen a mile away but as I said I genuinely enjoyed the game and will actually give it a second run.

Anyone think the flashlight is weird? Its like light doesnt reach certain places. Try aiming it at water foe example

Subtitle options are flawed. I tried several times to turn off the subtitle option but it goes back on when encountering the next NPC

As a comment on the bugginess, im playing on a Series X and im about half way through. Not had a bug yet but obviously the second half could be. As said its on Gamepass so the price isn't an issue. Im loving it so far.

Highly recommend In Sound Mind for a similar great experience

Played on GamePass and I completely enjoyed this title. And as a "usually play easy mode on fps' and stuff" type of guy, I went with Standard and found it fairly easy-ish. There is a lot of stealth, but there are lots of items throughout the world you can use to throw and therefore confuse the enemy so you can sneak around virtually un-noticed. I had absolutely no bugs or crashes in my game at all and agree with one of the comments below as when I died just a couple times (mostly from falling stupidly), the save points were good and I never lost a lot of game-time. Plus, dialogue options are "skippable" so if you died right after one, you can skip it on the re-spawn. I'm glad I didn't pay $30 outright for this, but honestly, it was one of the best voice-acted games I've played in quite some time and thought the developers did a fantastic job with the atmosphere, story and gameplay here. I would give this like an 8/10 and it's for sure a "must play" for me. It's definitely very linear and has "walking sim" vibes, but had my heart racing on numerous occasions and the map of the ship was really impressive

Played it this morning, maybe 5 hours?? Anyway, what may be interesting to some is that I played on my baby series S, and besides some frame drops right after loading into a new area, I had Zero crashes or any other real technical issues. It was fun. I think though I would never have paid $35, or if I had would have been a bit bummed.

I enjoyed it but you are right about the price and I don't see myself replay it

Really great narrative experience, played it in an evening with my wife watching. We enjoyed it. However, that price does hurt. It makes me wish we could still rent games.

i played through it and i absolutely loved it, even if i have to admit that after playing it on max settings on my pc. It has terrible mouse sensitivity and moisi outside kept catching me, because he somehow got bugged above me and i couldnt escape him (for few respawns). (Never had any crashes or gamebreaking bugs i couldnt cheese my way through).

I haven't played many narrative titles...I'm assuming Zork and HGTTG don't count...until a recent single one. At least that I can remember. Anyway, that was The Invicible. Which I really enjoyed. A playable novel. Fully VO which was good. Length and cost, value proposition, gave me discomfort. So I'm open to this type of game now. But price is what you pay, value is what you get. I'll keep an eye on this on; good for a change of pace. Thanks.

Just played this on series x, I'm a snob when it comes to tech issues and bugs and this game had 0 I can think of, the only thing I noticed was an almost stutter at the autosave points but that's most games really

Looks cool, but i just cant play games were you just need to hide from monsters (amnysia style) and sneak around.. walking simulators no problem, but sadly not if i cant protect myself

i think 35 dollars is ok for it although the only bugs i show was caz's feet when climbing being to his chest and the female npc having her hair float over her head like a lego witouth the hair part

Personally I didn’t care that much for the story. I liked the novelty of playing on an oil rig though. And the absolutely best part of the game for sure is the Scottish dialogue and accents. Loved learning that they call electric “the lecky”

I usually buy games full price but having just spent $40 on Shadow of the Erdtree, which is looking like an entire Souls game worth of content, I couldn’t drop $35 for a walking sim

I think we should question our beliefs about game length vs. the price. So many games nowadays are extended to a point of utter boredom just to justify their price range, which results in so many unfinished games. I'm 30 and in the last 5 years, I've only finished games that either take maximum of 20 hours (Journey, Firewatch, DMC5) or are masterpieces such as RDR2, Witcher 3, and BG3.

Yeah, it's too expensive for what it is, I'm going to wait to get it for 20 or so in a future sale.

While this isn't the type of game I usually play, hearing that it's good gives me more hope for VtM:B 2. Hopefully we'll see some of the more horror elements incorporated into it as well (even if it's just one mission like the hotel)

Your comment about "walking simulator" being too reductive is even funnier because one of the achievements is actually names Walking Simulator. You get it for not sprinting more than 10 minutes worth in the full game but the name is fun.

Makes no sense to me to buy it when you can play through it via Game Pass in one evening and then have a bunch of other games for the price that you can play for a month.

Honestly, it's mid ! The rig looks fantastic but until the end, we have no idea what that giant creature looks like. Caz's story is not easy to get a grip on, you have to get used to their accent and subtitles apparently are not always correct (had the occasion to speak to someone had himself that accent and he confirmed to me that subtitles are not entirely right) In the end, I thought Caz history came a little bit too much into the story but it is what it is. Interactions with other NPC is very limited and they're so great that I wish you could have learned more about them. Finally, I regret that the story turns out like most story of the same kind, in the end, you're the one doing everything and npc gives you orders to do this and that without really ever risking their life (even if we know what happens). I think the game would have benefited to have other npc coming along and forcing you to work in tandem with them to accomplish different objectives. (oh and it seems like your co-workers gets turned into monsters instantly, like Rennick while you get caught by tendrils multiple times without any secondary effects) The screen getting those weird effects also never does anything like driving you insane or having an overall effect on the character in the long run. Also, only one ending... No way to save some npc, have a different outcome, etc. which limits the replayability very much. It's a straight line from start to the end. Absolutely no surprise during the story, nothing impactful ever happen.

Playing on gamepass, so far the game is good especially the story but I prefer games that don’t rely so much on avoiding and/or running from enemies Edit: I was gonna give it a 3/5 but the story was so good. 4/5 for me 💪💪

I like "walking sims", especially for horror and investigation type games. But, I don't like it when they shoehorn in combat. Don't do that. It ruins the experience, IMO. There shouldn't be fighting, or any 'run or die' moments.
