I can appreciate everyone doing their own version of this song but there will NEVER be anyone quite like the beautiful, soulful Miss Billie Holiday 🙏🕊️🙌💜

I am an English teacher, and I am constantly looking for ways to stimulate my students with interesting assignments. I use Strange Fruit to teach figurative Language and too often ignored American History. I think my students will enjoy comparing Sting’s version of Strange Fruit to other artists’ versions.

It's a very good action, because their accents are really very different. I should say for you to try Cassandra Wilson's version.

Southern trees bear a strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees Pastoral scene of the gallant South Bulging eyes and the twisted mouth Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh And the sudden smell of burning flesh Here is the fruit for the crows to pluck For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop Here is a strange and bitter crop

This song was recorded for Amnesty International about 1985-1986. I owned the LP record namely "Conspiracy of Hope":www.discogs.com/Various-Conspiracy-Of-Hope/release/1212257I was 17, but got impressed by Sting´s voice and the power of this dark ancient song, previously performed by Billie Holiday.Greetings from Madrid - Spain

You are right. I bought this album in 1987. Great artists for great performance.

He does a great version of the song. I would hesitate to call the song ancient. The song isn't as old as my Dad.

I just did a vinyl rip of the American version, "Rock for Amnesty." This is one of the best songs on the album.

I've turned it to digital and "remasterized" without thinking of preserving the audio in wave form - no mp3 compression, that I really hate. I'm looking for someone that indicates me some digital version, on cd. If any of you get it, please let me know. Thank you.

For sure. It was recorded by Sting for a special project on Human's rights! I didn't put Billie's name because I thought everyone might know the song is hers.

This isn’t a “cool” song because of or in addition to the bass line. It’s one of the most poignant songs about the hanging of INNOCENT Negros during the 1930’s. It was initially performed by Ms Billie Holiday and it ripped the soul right out of her. It’s talking about how stupidly inhumane we were to other human beings simply because of the color of their skin. Although well done, it nevertheless reminds how cruel we can be to others due to some petty difference- a trait we have not yet lost and part of what makes other countries think we are borish , self righteous idiots. Next time do a little research before posting about how “cool” a song is!

Yes. And thank for backing me up! I’m finding our young people are too tuned into “touchy, feely” crap than actual facts and documented history. Thank heavens “the greatest generation” didn’t get into that and instead “got the job done”. I talked with a know it all 14 yr old the other day (online) that told me we (Americans) “got what we deserved at Pearl Harbor” because we dropped the Atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Amazing!

matieking How much time did the Japanese give before Pearl Harbor? A war that at the time we had not entered and were doing everything we could to stay out of...your view point of history seems to be somewhat skewed.

@@saunieh what the japanese did at pearl harbor was equally horrible, but didn't kill as many civilians. It's irrelevant to the atomic bombings anyway, different issue which was also wrong, but i don't feel like you as a American want to compare your actions to the Japanese, it's like saying well look at what the nazis did, so we matched what they did. You don't want to be on the same horrible level. Fact remains that the atomic bombings were grossly mismanaged, the president at that time was not in control of the bombs, the military commanders were, and they acted wrongly by bombing two cities. The Japanese would've surrendered after one most likely given the chance, and the possibility of dropping a second bomb would still be there. I think I'm being quite objective, seeing the wrong in both parties, while you seem quite skewed towards America. Although understandable, saying it's justified because of pearl harbor is a fallacy, it's a warcrime nonetheless. Obviously pearl harbor was horrible, but it has little to do with the issue of the atomic bombs. Ending the war was the main objective, not retaliation, at least that's how it should've been. Which means one bomb would have been enough. The two bombs worked differently and were developed seperately and the only reason both were fired is because they happend to be ready around the same time. Here's a good explanation www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/7pz3nf/why_did_the_us_decide_to_bomb_both_hiroshima_and
