In this video I work on a Stingray boat that came in non running and sitting for around 9 years. After the customer drained the fuel, I investigate why it's not getting any fuel. At the very least I find it needs a fuel pump and carb. What else will I find on this journey of fixing my first boat?

theres a cold start option where you can rev it in neutral. sometimes there is a button that you press then you put it into forward but it doesnt put it in gear instead it revs it up while starting then you can idle after starting.

I do 2-3 "forward to neutral" pumps of the throttle before starting if the engine is cold.

I knew there was something like that but I couldn't crack the code so to speak. The owner has taken it out a handful of times after I fixed it using the proper cold start technique and it's been running great for him.

I have a carbureted I/O Merc. For a cold start, I put my boat in neutral, then pump the accelerator handle forward and back about 8-10 times, then start it with 25% throttle. This generally does the trick.

Thank you, for some reason I couldn't figure out how to get around the safety switches that only allowed it to start at idle.

There should be a button on the accelerator, you press that in and then the shift lock button on the handle to move it into neutral

You keep the lower unit / out drive all the way down because of the u-joints. When an I/O is running, the driveshaft, u-joints and gimbal bearing (if it has one) are always turning. And you never go above idle when the lower unit is up. Puts a lot of stress on the u-joints.

I don't know boats either Ellis, I never worked on them professionally, although I did help a guy out as a second hand, working on his boat, maintenance related stuff, not so much fixing. I would have been thrown through a loop on this one as well to be honest. But in the end, you got the thing to start, but dam she's cold blooded. Since that Mercury engine is a 4-cylinder, thats no longer considered a small engine, thats like automotive now, so your getting quite the education, along with the rest of us. Since its carbureted, it should have an accelerator pump, I can tell you that much. When you get on the throttle, it should shoot some raw gas in advance, to prevent acceleration hesitation. Ideally you want an 800-RPM idle for automotive engines correct. Hoping to see more!

It's just a simple electric choke. It starts working the second you turn the ignition key on.

Hopefully it will cold start after the new owner gets it. Seems like a good little engine and sounds decent as well. Thanks for the videos.

I did not know the proper cold start technique with the boat but it has been running good for the owner ever since it got fixed!

There's an idle screw at the bottom of the carburetor for that

Weird...my same Stingray has a MUCH deeper tone to it. That one sounds like an angry Honda

so I got a boat with a 3,0 and have the same problem love to talk to you could i call you we are in PEI Canada and i think that it is the idle screw or the cable the boat has been running but now have trouble cold starting every thing else has been eliminated but the idle screw since watching your video I myself worked for 30 years at a John Deere Dealer in town as a parts manager i always wanted a boat so after my wife passed after a long illness I bought this boat no time to buy one earlier any way if you could give me your phone number I would call for a chat unless you have a email address
