The story of the crash of the Stinson aircraft in Lamington National Park (SE QLD) and the rescue 11 days later of 2 survivors is the stuff of true heroes and legends. This year was the 80th anniversary and I was able to take part in the full 37km 'Walk in Bernard's Footsteps' from O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat, to the crash site. A wonderful experience.

About Caro::----
I grew up in Sydney, Australia in a family that never went camping or on outdoors adventures.
Therefore, it came as somewhat of a surprise to discover hiking and camping in my mid 20’s and it fast became somewhat of an obsession.
Since then, I’ve become a leader with the Sydney Bush Walkers Club, Search Manager with NSW SES Bush Search and Rescue and author of 'How to Navigate - The art of traditional map and compass navigation in an Australian context.'
The outdoors totally changed my life and I’m keen to share my knowledge and stories with others - hoping that they’ll catch the bug too! Apart from sharing tips here and on the RU-vid channel, I am also a casual guide for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, encouraging young people aged 14-17 years old to fall in love with wild places.
You can also find me as a regular contributor for Great Walks Magazines, live on radio ABC702 Weekends with Simon Marnie and appearing as a speaker and workshop host at events such as Bushwalking Australia Conferences, ProBlogger, ORIC (Outdoor Recreation Industry) Conference, SheWentWild and Women’s Adventure Summit.

i stumbled across this site, 6-3-21, it bought back memories of when i was a 9yr lad in 1947. with a group of boys (41) from kelvin grove school, we went on a week holiday to Christmas creek camping site. i don't know if it still exists because of the commercial attitude of today. we caught a railmotor from South Brisbane station, the rail had not crossed the river yet, the only way to get to Beaudesert back then, after a couple of hours in the rail motor, no glass windows only roll down canvas blinds, we arrived at Beaudesert, then had a bus to the camp site, a long hut, mainly for meetings and meals, and at least 6 or more army huts, 4 double decker beds to a hut, down on the flat ground not far from the creek. one day the camp leader, teachers from the school, told us we would be hiking to the Stinson wreck. we all had the old army water bottles, we were not pampered like today, and most had the old style sandshoes, again not like the hiking shoes of today, the cook had prepared each boy a couple of sandwiches which were to last till we reached the crash site and an apple and orange for in between. i remember we followed the creek for some time then branched off on to the bush trail. we did not cross on any logs but walked through the creek. we visited Westray grave and on to the plane wreck, from what i remember only a small amount of metal and wire overgrown with vines. i did have some photos of both but they seem to have got lost in all the shifting over the years. the only photos i have is of the group of boys and leaders before we broke camp and cookie in the back ground. i hope if any of the boys read this they will add a comment and remember. my camera was a box brownie. roy ludlow

I grew up close to Lamington National Park. I had a great interest in aircraft. Never got that close to the Stinson crash. As a kid I had a great interest in aeroplanes and when I grew up became a commercial pilot. I have flow over the are many times. Can't understand why the pilot and company at the time didn't fly that route to Lismore ie., Brisbane, Ballina right turn 70 deg., turn and on to Lismore. Nice flat country on that route. The 3 engine stinson of the day was a very safe robust aeroplane. One can see by the crash if took a lot of punishment. But sad to say a crash and avoiding a fire was pretty poor odds as the gas tanks were in the wings right near the engines.

I used to walk up to the grave, then travel up the creek to the waterfall where I would have a swim then on the way back once I hit the track I would run back as it’s mostly downhill coming back.

a Stinson is a single engine airplane.

There were single engine Stinsons as private aircraft, but also Stinson Tri Motors used as air liners before WW2.. Airlines of Australia imported 4 Stinson Trimotors for use between major cities, and three of these were lost in accidents due to terrain, bad weather and unreliable engines.

The Stinson company in the USA made the famous 8 seater Tri Motor.small airliner. Many were used in different parts of the world. A very successful aircraft, very rugged and in general a reasonable performer.

Just yesterday I was perusing your Instagram feed and wondering if you were going to resume making videos and a day later, here you are. :) Looks like a great hike. I suspect you've probably seen it, but for others, there is a pretty decent telemovie titled, "The Riddle of the Stinson" and as luck would have it, its available on RU-vid. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RpiKvBkLzXg.html Cheers, b.
