May I suggest that you remove the bridge rectifier and repeat the experiment in AC mode? You are loosing power in the rectifier to the ~1.2 volt drop across 2 diodes. You also might consider lighting an LED without the rectifier. Great video! Thanks.

Not only that , he needs a guide rod at the top of the magnet so the magnet moves in a straight line. I think he can get more power with a higher resistance , so the magnet can get up to speed. Flywheel is another required item.

With a processor with an a/d converter, you could make a synchronous rectifier made of VMOS FETS and get a zero voltage drop rectifier.
@GlennHamblin
@GlennHamblin 3 года назад
@@benthere8051 You can actually buy ideal diode ICs now, no micro required for synchronous rectifiers.

Folks, this is solid gold information, simple as it is. I've been scratching around the internet for the last couple of days looking for information on Stirlings. There's not a lot. There's a lot of TALK about them, but nowhere you can just "buy one" the way you would a DC or AC motor, and precious little in the way of plans and actionable information. This is material that gets your foot in the door. Add in some understanding of thermodynamics that lets you start to quantify what you're doing using real physics, and you're on the road to discovery.
@tenbitcomb

Spot on. At least this guy is experimenting with designs and keeping it simple. It's also strange how stirling engines seem to have really fallen out of vogue on the internet in the last 10 years.

There are Microgen generators that you can buy and even CHP systems Ököfen for household use. I've been searching a used microgen generators or very good drawings, but it seems to be so complex to build at home that it would be better to find one.

Would it be more efficient if you had used a speaker for the power generation ? A 2nd step could be to variably change the resistance through an arduino board because the engines output varies in frequency and this way you could steer the result.
@KipIngram

It sure would be nice to know how much heat power is going in, though I see how that would be hard to know. Maybe you could measure how much fuel is consumed over some period of time? I understand of course that this is a proof of principle demonstration - not a serious attempt to convert power. I've tremendously enjoyed your videos on this - thanks for your time and effort!

It needs a guide rod on the piston to keep it from hitting the coil. Or making the coil wider to account for lateral movement. Great video, thanks for sharing!
@BJL2142
@BJL2142 Год назад
Your right it needs a guide because making the coil diameter larger would reduce efficiency, in my opinion not a solution to the problem at play

The orientation of the magnets may not be very efficient. The magnetic field lines in this prototype may be running almost parallel to the coil. Would it be better if the coil was cutting the field lines at 90 degrees? Maybe if you could re-position the magnets it may make a difference. I'm not sure of this. Maybe someone could let me know if my thinking is wrong here. Thanks - Great video.

@HvdHaghen
@HvdHaghen Год назад
Perfect. This is the way to go. The efficiency is low, and others did not want to measure it anymore, but by knowing the efficiency you can easily see what changes improve the engine. I would even recommend to use an electrical heat element (for 3D printers) or a heater band (for injection molding) when doing measurements, because then you know how much energy goes in and comes out of the engine. I think stirling engines can be made much more efficient when the makers have a clear sight on the efficiency.

The orientation of the magnet realtive to the coil isn't a good one. Moving a magnet into or out of a coil doesn't induce a lot of current. The magnet should move sideways relative to the axis of the coil. I know, hard to construct in this setup, and the power taken out will most likely immediately stop the engine. But just if someone is wondering.

The power that's generated by an oscillating mass is given by using the formula for simple harmonic motion : Power in watts =1/2 m .(2πr.f)^2 Note that this gives the same result as the Rotational formula : 1/2 I w^2 , where I is the moment of inertia, as I = mr^2 and w =2(pi)f, So if the mass, m, of the magnet is 50g = 0.050kg and the amplitude r of the oscillation is 1cm = 0.01m and the rate of oscillation is 20Hz. Then the power is 0.5x 0.05 x (2x 3.1416x 0.01x 20)^2 =.0394 watts =39mW Please correct my assumptions of the mass, amplitude and oscillation rate. Note the amplitude is half the peak distance moved by the centre of mass

Because that top is made of rubber it is not going to allow the weight to resonate in a perfect up and down motion, it smacks the sides of the coil too much. It always will too, unless we can figure out some other way to tap electricity from it.

@GlennHamblin

Except buck converters lower voltage. A boost converter could be considered, but that would be tough at that low voltage. However, there are joule thief circuits that run below a volt. Still won't be very efficient, so power loss.

Can you build a small wind turbine that generates electric traditionally (alternator method) with also a Wimshurst mechanism added to it to harvest additional static discharge? They both use rotary motion, so it would seem that you could combine mechanisms to produce something interesting (I have a few ideas on top of this, but just getting a little test in place would be intriguing).
