Now THIS I can get into! I have stopped quilting because of all the Quilt Police videos with their stringent rules, math, and measuring. So many quilters seem to quilt in order to show off how anal they are. I need to get away from perfectionism and anxiety, not encourage them. I want to quilt because of my love of beautiful textiles. I have been looking for a method that I could use that would just be easy, relaxing and fun. Thanks to you, I think I have found it. Well done!

Thank you so much! You make me want to cry! I hate that the "rules" stop people from quilting. I can't say I have always been this way, though. I have grown as a maker and am realizing more and more how much the rules don't matter! I do have to say as a RU-vidr you do have to walk a fine line between teaching skills and allowing creative freedom. It is tricky! When I give a "rule," I usually try my best to tell why it is important and what will happen if you don't do it, BUT if the maker/viewer is okay with that, who am I to judge? The important part is to be creative and have some fun. Life it too short to listen to the quilt police! LOL! Thank you so much for your kind words, for taking the time to watch, and for commenting! Screw the quilt police! If it brings you joy to do it, it doesn't hurt anyone else, and people enjoy your gifts, you should get joy where ever you can. Life is too short.😊

I totally understand this - so much so that I have began to quilt with a mindful approach that I set out to enjoy the process only, and when the project gets done, it gets done. No rush, no stress, no worry. After all, we quilt for fun, not because we actually need the product it produces! Fun should be no stress. Welcome back to the quiltiverse and glad you found a strategy that will make it enjoyable for you again!

I am sorry you let the quilt police discourage you. I love Kris O'Neil. Also check out Conquer Mt. Scrapmore with Brenda and 70 Acres Studio for other non-judgmental quilter's. Scrap Quilting is really forgiving and relaxing. Happy Quilting!

I love this idea. My bible jacket was falling to pieces so I made a crazy patchwork cover for it. It looks so nice, bright and cheery. I makes me happy every time I pick my bible up.

Yay! I love this! I also love the idea of a quilted Bible cover. Hmmm. I may have to do that for mine! As for repairing yours, you could even appliqué patches over it. The quilt I show at the beginning (which, by the way, is the exact quilt I am featuring next week), has appliqué incorporated in some of the blocks, too. I do this kind of block all the time without a foundation. The advantage is, you don’t have to undo any sewing, plus you can cut the block and re-sew it in different position obtaining some nice and interesting triangles. I’ve seen others using the batting as a foundation and then just add the back part. Anyway, thanks for the video.

Yes! I have tried these other methods, too! I do have a video on crumb quilting where I don't use a foundation. I opted for this method for this block because I was using vintage fabrics and they aren't always stable, but I probably would have been okay. Thanks for mentioning these tips! @@SewtheDistance Sewing directly on batting stabilizes perfectly, no need to use/waste fabric as stabilizer. Fabric of any kind gets more expensive every day.

When you're hunting for those longer strips (or whenever) you could also stitch two scraps together then put the pair onto the foundation. Even more scrappy look! 😊

I’m too much of a scrappy quilt person but I was gifted some crazy quilt blocks made with this method after a friend passed away. I ironed and squared them all up and make three quilts out of them. They turned out beautiful and are some of my favorite quilts. So, I guess I do like scrappy quilts. 😅

Years ago, I picked up a huge box of fabric scraps (like I didn’t already have enough) from a yard sale. I left it in the box for a few days before I went thru it. To my sup rise, they were all vintage from the 70’s! I was so excited! I had so much fun playing with it.

I love that your scraps are all rumpled. I see so many videos about scrap management - pressing, organizing, cutting into specific sizes...I don't have time for all that. especially since I may never actually use them all! I put all my scraps in one container and use as needed. One question...what is the advantage of using a fabric foundation vs. a paper one?

Thank you so much! I agree--I am even thinking about donating my scraps and just starting over. LOL! Well, not the vintage scraps, but all the other ones. I feel like it would be so freeing! Sigh. Maybe I will. It is hard to part with them though. As for the fabric vs. paper for foundations, I feel the fabric moves more with the fabric and provides a more suitable foundation, especially for old fabrics. That said, if you are thinking about hand-quilting the finished item, it can be challenging needling through all those layers. Paper is nice because you remove it. The difference are minor, really, and both are great options. I hope this helps!

Mom always used old sheets to cut fir backing squares. She usually did 12x12 squares. I remember her and grammavsewing them by hand. Later, she did on sewing machine. She did on with all solid colors and did fancy embroidery on the seems. They were beautiful.

I am 77 and have crazy quilts, my great grandmother and greatcaunt made. They pinned their pieces on a foundation piece and then turned edges over and then top stitched them,thus having some curved edges. I have also done it that way. Your was is much easier. One ring they did to have some continuity was to decide how many blocks they would have in their quilt, say 20 blocks. Then they would make 20 piles, including one piece of a fabric in each pile. They would do this with a number pf different pieces and then roll each stack into little bundles. They would then use 1 bundle with other random pieces for each block. I was able to make a couple of quilts using their bundles and still have a few of the bundles of fabric they put together.

For me, I think this technique is easier if I iron my Fabrics first. Because I'm not about to snip any stitches or use a seam ripper. But Cutting is fine....Plus it just gives me a better idea of what it's going to look like when my fabric is ironed first. Yes I am a type A. And I wish I wasnt! I hate it...🤣🤣 Thanks for sharing! I’m just now seeing this… I have done this with 10” square papers to do as donation quilts. I haven’t finished any but my intentions are good 😂😂. Because I don’t quilt my own snd long arming can get expensive, I think I’ll tie them !! Pulling off the papers isn’t fun tho…I like your muslin idea!!

I like this tutorial! I must be type A when it comes to quilting, I did some foundation crazy quilt piecing yesterday for the first time and I had to press each piece open and trim excess with scissors as I went! It was driving me crazy ha ha ha ha! But it went together really quickly and I really liked it when I was finished!

Fancy surface stitches, or ribbons etc over the top at various times is also adorable. Though not sure how that would go over with the longarm machine

Great ideas! I did finish this one and I used fancy stitches but not ribbon. I did, however, use ribbon in my stitch-and-flip Christmas stocking video I posted in July! I used all the fun stuff--buttons, ribbons, etc. I made it as a quilt-as-you-go project, so the quilting was done before the embellishments were added. So much fun! Thank you for the tip!

I made a lot of scrappy strip squares out of my scraps. I'm sewing at least 3-4 at one time as it goes faster - and I'm ironing between as I think it works better for me. I want to make a quilt with jeans squares between the scrappy ones.

I enjoyed that, loved the square, exactly what I am thinking about recently but I would dearly like to develop more freedom, matching fabric is hard for me to drop. I have watched so many scrappy videos and (hope you don't me mentioning) found a lady " my sewing room" here on RU-vid, she is my other fav channel along with you, it's the vintage quilt thing I am determined to make one, thank you so much!

This is the ONLY way I do quilting, it gives you so many open doors that you can play with. I don't give a hoot about straight lines, I love the wacky look and always have, don't want something that looks like it comes from a factory. I have been known to even "patch" the block I have just got done. Accidents do happen, just add charm to a quilt.

This looks like a fun project! I'm pretty new to quilting and sewing, but I have accumulated a ton of scraps. This will be a great way of putting the scraps to good use. Do you have a video on how you then sew the blocks together? Do you just sew them together like other blocks? Do you then quilt it the same as you would other quilts? Thank you for your videos and advice.

Such a fun project! It is freeing and fun! I know I recorded putting these together and I think it was in one of my vlogs. I will try to find which one and link it in this thread. You do just put them together like other blocks. Because of the foundation, the bias edges are stable. You can quilt it any way you would like, but be mindful that it is thicker, so you may need to adjust your stitch length and possibly even your seam allowance, depending on how thick it turns out. Did you backstitch at the beginning and the end? I’m new to sewing and quilting, but I like the randomness of the colors and shapes of the fabric pieces with this style of quilting.

I didn't, but you certainly could if you would like to backstitch. Because I made a bunch and sewed them together into a quilt, I didn't need to do that. The seams between the blocks would secure the stitches in the actual blocks. If you feel better doing it, however, it won't hurt anything. Thank you for watching and commenting. He really wanted me to press them, too! 😂 I finished this quilt but the details are all spread out in the vlogs I used to do. I need to get them all into one video. Well, I didn't and I am very happy with the results. That said, I am usually a person who presses as I sew, but it was nice to throw that "rule" out the window and just have fun. The quilt turned out beautifully, too! ❤️

I keep saying I have to gather all the videos together that I made with this block and make an update. 😬 You simply sew them together like you would any other block, by putting right sides together and stitching. The foundation won't make a difference. If you want to reduce some bulk, you can open your seams when stitching the block together. I demonstrate this in one of my vlogs: Here is one of them. have you tried using the zigzag stitch to piece together the scraps to avoid sewing right sides together then unfold then iron to flatten? (i hope you get what im trying to say.)

I noticed you did not iron your scraps so I'm wondering if not ironing the fabric before you sew it down causes any permanent wrinkles or bubbles or missaped sections? I learned crazy quilting years ago but haven't done it for a long time. I enjoyed being reminded how much fun they can be.

I am so happy this reminded you of the fun! I didn't press anything until afterwards and didn't have any issues. That said, I know many people do press as they go. I think it just depends on your comfort level and personality. I did make this into a quilt, but the updates are spread around through my vlogs. I am hoping to get all those sections into one video soon so you can see the finished project. I hope this helps! ❤️

Great question! The backing/foundation offers stability for the pieces, especially when the fabrics are scraps. Many scraps are not cut on grain, so the fabric can stretch. Adding a base like this can help make sure they don't stretch as much, making it easier to work with them. So glad you love this idea! If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Actually Kris I wanted to ask you, are those scissors you are using Karen Kay Buckley scissors? I have been making yo-yos and I only have my large sewing scissors and they are not handy to lug around with me and I have been considering a pair of these scissors. How do you find them? Easy to take around with you and cut nicely?

Yes! They are Karen Kay Buckley scissors! I have them in three different sizes and are my go-to scissors for just about everything. I pieced this pair up at a quilt shop but also found them at quilt shows (I miss quilt shows--stupid COVID!), and I think they are available on Amazon, as well. They are great sharp scissors and this size would work well for yo-yos. I also keep a small pair (green handle) in with my handwork. I like Gingher's too. So happy to hear you are making yo-yos!

I was wondering what Stitch and Flip was. I just found out that I have been doing it for a long time to use up my scraps. However, I use cheap copy paper as the foundation (that I square to 8 1/2 inch squares.) I use a fine stitch; and, I remove the paper after I press and square the blocks. While I remove the paper from the back, I inspect my seams and remove any extra fabric not needed (to reduce the bulk). Someone told me she puts batting on top of her fabric foundation before she sews her scraps on. She told me that I would be piecing and quilting at the same time. I've never done this her way; because, I think the quilting on the back would be ugly. I use this type of project to emply many of my bobbins of left over threads from old projects. .

Great ideas! I have used foundation paper in the past and have also used the quilt as you go method. Both are great, too! For this project, that extra fabric gave it some stability since I was using vintage fabrics. All are great methods though! Thank you so much for sharing. May I ask why you don’t press those fabrics before you sew? I make charity quilts and have noticed that wrinkles tend to stay in the fabric if I don’t mist and press before sewing

Sure! I usually press my fabrics but I didn’t feel like it on this day and wanted to “break the rules” and just have fun. You absolutely can press. It is up to you. If that’s better for you, go for it. For me and for this project, I just wanted to let loose and sew. The quilt turned out beautiful. It was fun! ❤️ Hope this helps with an explanation.
