BT: The objective of investing is not to beat the market, but to fund our retirement. Best insight. Sometimes we get lost in all the action and forget.

The US market keeps on marching higher while the HSI keeps going down. In the past 60 years the S&P appreciated by 11% per year. Well, the HSI? same time frame? 19% per year. So chinese and Baba investors (me included) need to see the picture longer Term.

All stock pickers usually aim to beat S&P which is widely considered as standard, if not simply invest in s&p which will be just the market returns which is also huge gains in a bull run for 7 figure portfolio
@BoonTee
@BoonTee 29 дней назад
S&P500 (or other broad based ETF like VWRA) is superior because we can save a lot of time and still guaranteed to get the market average return. On the other hand, I still see value in putting the effort to pick individual stocks from education point of view.
@thealchemistinsearch
@thealchemistinsearch 29 дней назад
@@BoonTee , i assume ETF/S&P is your biggest holding then? If it is for self study/education, would make sense to invest small % in stock picking. By the way, i stock picked and so far did well, but only beating s&p by a couple of % YTD. But managed to beat QQQ in 1 year duration. It might be pure luck and I honestly believe the if i had invested in s&p as a major and a QQQ as a tech proxy, i would have slept well and did well. The ultimate test is to pass the sleep test! If you can do that stock picking will be just fine!

@@BoonTee enjoying your latest podcast video with boontie. so, let me ask you this: he admitted he panic sold META. you've been diamond handing your concentrated BABA position for quite some time now. IMO i agree with what BT said in the video about China, it can go either way and we can't really say for certain. that's why i adjusted my own position in china big tech from position sizes similar to yours to smaller ones. is that panic selling? to me, panic selling is what many amateur retail investors do which is invest in a lot of unprofitable growth story stocks into hype and panic sell when it crashes up to 75%, get burned, and decide to get back into the market either too late or even never - getting left behind thoughts? i've also had multiple 5 figure drawdowns in a day/week too lol funny to think of how we play with our money

Thanks for your insights, Chi Keng. I learnt a lot from your channel. Can I aslo ask for your opinion on using ibkr to buy hongkong stocks? Does trading fee more expensive though I'm very attracted by the exchange rate? Thank you so much in advance for your advice 🙏
@taychikeng
@taychikeng Месяц назад
Not advice - but I do use IB to buy HK stocks too. I understand that there are alternatives that offer much lower comms. I still have a lot of HK stocks in other brokers right now. It also helps that HK has minimum lot sizes, so per trade requires more capital - compared to fractional US trading which sometimes can cost quite a bit in commissions (if it's not free).

Personally, when I invest in a stock, in my mind I tell myself that I have already lost all that money. This way even when the price tank, it does not affect me that much. I have a few stocks with the companies filed for bankruptcy and that cost me 10s thousands and it is not a small sum for me. But because of the mindset I have, it didn't affect me much. It is kind of like a "man math" thing. If the moment I invest in a stock I have already lost the money, then there is nothing more to lose. And definitely luck play a big part when it comes to stock cos even though I lost quite an amount, there were still 1 or 2 stocks that doubled and pull me back up into the green. Plus I never panic sell. Instead, if a stock is tanking, and I know the fundamental of the company is strong, I will wait for a good entry point so I can average down. One thing though, I never touch options. I always use what I have on hand to invest. This way I can sleep well every night and not worry on which direction the market is going.

Thanks both for sharing great insights. I've just started learning to invest this year while the market is at ATH 😢. May I ask when Boon Tee says the his investment philosophy is for retirement, do you guys still DCA into the market monthly now when the market is at its ATH? Understand that you got in NVDA and other tech stocks a few years ago when they are at lower price, doesn't that mean buying in now will increase the average price? Or do you buy other stocks every month now? Because this is a recurring thing to do in order to accumulate a big enough portfolio for retirement, so I'm curious how you guys allocate the monthly salary? Hope to get your advice, and thanks in advance!
@BoonTee

I am not adding to the shiny stocks such as Nvidia, in fact the last time I added was 2022. For me it is a buy and hold. But although overall market seems on the high valuation, I don't think we should stop deploying. For me I still continuously invest in stock market, it just that I have lowered the investment amount since probably end of last year. So every month I have been adding to treasury bill as well. The treasury bill is helpful from emotional standpoint, because I know that I can step up by DCA anytime when I see market is coming down in valuation.

I see alot of most youtubers always say they are not afraid / not affected as long as the company fundamental is good / s&p is strong, its ok they go down short term bcos they look at 20yrs horizon. History shown the track record. But can that be applicable to a person that is 50/60 who will gradually withdraw their assets gradually to enjoy life? Also how about concern on world changing order, for that 20yr horizon?

On the horizon question, for those who are at senior age, they simply can't take up too much risks in stock market because of the need to draw from the portfolio in retirement age.
