These would be perfect paired with a home canned jar of meat and broth.

That's a great idea! It's similar to your Noodle Soup in a jar, in that you can add the meat and bouillon/broth of your choice. Conversely, I have made soup extender in jars. That helps you add more nutrition/servings on the fly. It has pearled barley, lentils, rice, macaroni, split peas, and onion flakes in it (equal amounts of each), and all you need is a cup to extend any soup or stew.

@sherihicks1427. What a great idea on the soup extender. Here's my question ... how much additional broth/stock/water would I add to my regular soup recipe to account for 1C of the mix? I don't cook with dry legumes very often. Thanks!
@sherihicks1427
@sherihicks1427 4 месяца назад
@@pamskinner9490 I don't know, Pam. I usually just add what I think will do it, and then watch and stir, adding more if it gets too thick. I'm not real precise😂 And, it might only need more water, not necessarily more broth. Kind of up to you.

Most grains need 3 to 4 times more liquid than the amount of the original grains. Rice is a 2 to 1 ratio, but that is just for the rice, no broth for the soup.

I wonder if making up little spice jars this way would work too. Make up your chicken stock spice jar or you beef stew spice jar. Grab your soup starter mix. Decide which meat you want to use then grab your spice mix and just pour it in. Those baby food mason jars would work great for your soup spice starter jars.

My leftovers go into the freezer that night. At the end of the week I pull the compatible leftovers out and put them in a pot with chicken broth. A chicken leg here, a pork chop there. Leftover corn, green beans, peas, doesn't matter it goes in the pot. Ive never had a bad pot and it doesn't really matter what you put in. Once it all cooks together, its the best meal of the week.

Hey Jeni! Because I make my Dog Food… I started using QUINOA… instead of rice (Diabetic Dog). The Quinoa is great to add to your Soup Jars too! I’m not a real fan of Kale… unless I’m making ZUPPA TOSCANA. But you can grind up that dried kale into POWDER and add to smoothies

An excellent idea. I tend to make a mix of dried grains, pulses, dried garlic, onion, herbs, and sometimes chili. Then when I want to use them add boiling water and let them hydrate as a soup base. I've never added dried veg before as I usually have stuff growing in the garden, but certainly a good addition.

Great idea and I enjoyed watching. I would love to do something similar without the freeze-dried/dehydrated as I don't have the time/inclination to do those methods of preserving and I don't see these sold here in Canada. That said, the rest of the stuff in these would work even if I had to do fresh vegetables at the time of cooking. It takes a few minutes to peel and dice. Thanks for showing this!
