End credits of the 1975 film starring Channing, Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty. Directed by Mike Nichols. (The film bombed, but Channing was nominated for a Best Newcomer Golden Globe.)
I remember when going to the movies was fun. My brother and I spent an afternoon in Santa Rosa California to get money to go and see this.. I was 12 and my brother was ten. $1.25 to get in and popcorn didn't cost $20 a bucket! :)
I love Stockard's singing voice, it's so unique and lovely. It works perfectly for a song made to sound like it was recorded during the 1920s like this one. I'm guessing that is the sort of sound they were aiming for anyway, but perhaps not. Either way, our darling Ms. Channing sounds wonderful. Bless her heart!
Heavens to Sweet Sue Snell ! I remember seeing this at a local theater when it was first released. My friend & I were rather baffled by it but I've always thought Stockard Channing was one lovely lady ! What a cutie !! And of course she's a VERY talented performer. The courtyard apartments in this scene look a lot like the one featured in another movie from the same year ("The Day of the Locust" - which starred Karen Black, William Atherton & Burgess Meredith). Both of these movies turned out to be box office flops. And Paramount had put a LOT of money into "Locust" ! THANKS for uploading !! :-)
As Sondheim said for Glynis Johns, for "Send in the clowns" - it was for her originally; - She is not a singer with capital "S", but .... Channing as well . Love her expression. Although there are better trained voices in world of actors, she brings us everything. Her song in Grease is far above others. And dont we forget - she worked in theater, not many have her achievements. Brava sempre.
Wait a minute... This is a Hollywood picture from 1975, when "nostalgia" was "in" and some of the most tasteless, most anachronistic 'vintage' music EVER was perpetrated on the public, and yet... This version of "I Must be Dreaming" is PERFECT. It sounds like a Sam Lanin record from 1930. The orchestration is authentic, they play it just right - even the drummer!! - Stockard Channing sings like Helen Rowland or someone from the time. Just terrific. Kudos to music director David Shire.
Where can I find the movie? Did they put it out on VHS or DVD? I read the plot and it sound REALLY funny. Stockard Channing is great! :D Such a unique voice and look! She's my idol! :D :D
I noticed that too ! I saw this movie and "Day of the Locust" with a friend at local theaters when they were first released (both in 1975). Though both were box office flops, my friend & I found things we liked in both flicks. I found Stockard extremely sexy and "Locust" was an intriguing look at the underbelly of 1930's Hollywood. As is usually the case, the Nathaniel West book of the same name ("The Day of the Locust") is MUCH better than the movie. Nathaniel West's other great literary masterpiece is "Miss Lonelyhearts" which was made into an ernest but rather dreary drama in the late 50s starring Monty Clift, Myrna Loy, Robert Ryan and (in her first screen role), Maureen Stapleton.
