In this update of AidanEyewitness we take a look at the progress of the two major construction projects currently in progress in Stockport Town Centre West. Both are scheduled for completion in 2024.
00:00 Introduction by AidanEyewitness
00:35 Stockport Transport Interchange
03:27 Weir Mill renovation & construction
04:24 Stockport's magnificent railway viaduct
05:50 Criticism of one aspect of the Weir Mill renovation
07:00 The River Mersey and intersecting lines
09:00 Intersecting lines on the map
10:00 Positive aspects of the Transport Interchange
10:27 Summing up and conclusion
They are the Transport Interchange and the conversion of Weir Mill. Using some drone shots we will study the two construction sites to gain a better understanding of the layout. We’ll see the progress of construction, which on both sites is well advanced.
There has been criticism of both projects. People have complained that the residential building above the transport interchange is too tall and massive. Someone said it should have been built right next to the station, but there is a reason why that would not have been feasible.
My personal criticism is directed against one major feature of the Weir Mill construction site, the tall block which they have placed right in front of the railway viaduct, preventing a clear, uninterrupted view of the upper part of the Grade 2* structure for the first time since it was opened in December 1840.
I will have more to say about this in future videos.
The entire video is made in 4K. If you are having playback problems, try adjusting the quality down from 2160p to 1440p and below.
Many thanks to Cinemaker for the drone shots. Check out his channel @cinemaker

Nice country the Netherlands, I love the architecture and the general feel of the place. It has changed, the apartments... well we'll have to wait and see. Many thanks for your message!

Apartments are not like the old days when families were moved in with nowhere for kids, they're usually for singles, couples and many rented often have age restrictions such as over 50s.

I’ll be moving up from London into one of these apartments when they’re completed. Manchester is the best city in the U.K in my opinion. The people are friendly, the architecture is beautiful, it’s got easy access to the countryside and has an extensive arts and social scene. Please be nice to your new southern neighbour when I come up as I adore your city and suburbs.

Oh I’m sure you’ll have no problems as a refugee from ‘The Smoke’. Many people from there have moved to Manchester, foremost among them writer and retired PR guy Andy Spinoza.

Another brilliant update, I'll make an effort to visit when it's finished and walk along the new green area to as close to the viaduct as possible, I'm hoping it provides a whole new view of that iconic structure for future artists.

Many thanks for your positive feedback. There will be a slightly more close-up view but the addition of the block in front of the viaduct is personally a disaster.

@@AidanEyewitness I agree I wish it wasn't there but I like to find the positives, I still think the extra green space means the positives outweigh the negatives.

Another interesting and informative video. Shame about the new block rising about the high of line.

Many thanks. The block will be nearly double the height of the viaduct. To me the viaduct is the ‘St Paul’s Cathedral’ of railway engineering. In London, key sightlines towards St Paul’s are protected. Many thanks for your positive feedback about the video, much appreciated. :)

You're doing wonderful work. Sorry but I really like that tall building but I do totally see your point. It will be a fascinating vantage point. I really wish we'd kept a lot of chimneys as works of art.

The Plaza is not a Cinema, it’s a Theatre and has been restored to its original 1930,s style.

The Plaza website refers to it as "The Plaza Super Cinema and Variety Theatre". I went to watch movies there as a child, I found the steep steps in the gallery very scary!

Excellent video and commentary. That is the question "how will things look in future Stockport"? How will this development be viewed by future generations? In my opinion, I think the interchange itself will age well. I like its organic nature - the curves of its façade, the large windows letting in natural light, and the greenery on top. Unlike most modern buildings, trees and plantings usually look better with time. Unfortunately the same can't be said for the apartment building. It's boxy, big, and bland. Just a modern-day equivalent of Regent House and Beckwith House. I think its only redeeming features are the fact that it is faced in brick with a fair amount of window area. It lacks beauty of visual interest. I don't think future generations will find it inspiring but as it's shiny and new with, as you say, a "unique place on the map" I'm sure they'll have no problem finding tenant paying loads.

Many thanks for your positive feedback. I pretty much agree with you. How did people feel in 1965 when Merseyway shopping centre was opened. I think they thought it would usher in a bright new world of modernity. In later years they had to remodel it. I wonder if it will be the same with these new developments.

Great update, I can't help as an original native of Stockport, but wonder how such a redevelopment will improve the town, beyond a more modern facade without a substantial economic boom to raise living standards. I also wonder if the target hipster clientele with tech skills and high wages will actually move into the developments shown around the site of the old bus station? Several of the UKs towns and cities have seen a boom in recent years in steel and glass developments (see Croydon for the latest urban planning monstrosities as a case in point), however in reality, most of the apartments in those new blocks are sold to investors who don't inhabit them and they remain zombie buildings surrounded by discarded offices turned into urban slums for the deprived, sadly. I hope I'm wrong, but facelifts don't really change places over time.

Well you raise a number of interesting points there and we'll just have to wait to see if you are right - or wrong! I intend to monitor and document what happens, so keep watching AidanEyewitness!

That large residential building above the interchange is build-to-rent - no apartments for sale, instead the whole thing is owned and let out by a single company. I suspect their main clientele will be commuters wishing to live close to a train station with easy access to Manchester and London. A lot of newer developments tend to be rental only nowadays. It’s probably a lot easier for the building owners to manage if they own the whole thing outright. Also, the whole issue with “zombie buildings” is drastically overstated, especially around Manchester where apartments are usually on the market for only a week or two before being snatched up, even the 1 bed £1200+ pcm ones. A lot of people with well paying jobs live in Manchester these days - and people willing to spend a large percentage of their pay on rent for the city centre lifestyle. Look around Deansgate Square at night and the amount of lights on in those buildings are proof that they’re well occupied.

@@theblah12 Yes, all good points. There are plenty of people willing to rent these apartments. Nowadays there are lot of people earning very high salaries in Manchester city centre, more than in the past. You can see in the closing sequence of my latest video how the Deansgate Square towers windows are lit up, apart from Three60 but that is not yet occupied! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mxoKZFUWLIE.htmlsi=aDByfRsX2VLgVjaT

I think that's a good point about Merseyway. We'll just have to see how it turns out. There is one person who thinks it is going to be perfect and a huge success - the director of the developers who are carrying out the renovation. Whether he's right remains to be seen.

The rents are way higher than probably the majority of people could afford, however there are lots of young professional people earning good salaries. If two people are sharing, then they can easily afford it. It's a case of "how the other half lives".

You would be surprised how much people are willing to spend on rent these days. Especially if you’re an ex-Londoner used to spending £2000 a month for a 1 bed.

Not really a fan of this one Aidan. Smacks too much of failed 1960s' notions of pedestrian access and circulation. Hopefully it works well

@@AidanEyewitness The flow is good, and the connections between train, bus and pedestrian/cyclist routes, etc, but it is too suburban and distant from the facilities it is meant to access. t s much easer getting a taxi from downtown out to the airport, for example, than lugging everything onto a train and then walking (or getting a tax) from the parkway. It looks nice still though! :)

We definitely do need Stockport’s new transport interchange. Many new car parks have been built and are being built. The cities are not going to die because new apartments and houses are being built in the heart of towns and cities bringing new life. Many thanks for your comment!
