Double barrel shotguns in general are a good multi purpose shotgun Good for self defense, find em for cheap/inexpensive, more likely be state compliant, good for hunting, good truck gun, good for beginners etc

Yes and no, Stoegers come pretty tight action wise. So snap-shut will actually SMOOTH the action out a bit . I polished up all the parts on mine to slick it up so it falls open and shut quite nicely.
Good choice! 12g is an overkill and unnecessary. Would be great if it would have ejectors but Coach Guns never have that. 000 Buck in .410 actually has a lot of over penetration in ballistic gel. Smaller like between 1 and 4 buckshot would be enough. But even birdshot looks ok.
I'd take a good 410 over a 12 for home defense any day of the week. But that's just me. With good shoot placement at typical home defense distances (10 to 15, 20 feet) a 410 will get the job done. As for using shot for defense... I normally go with no. 4. You don't get as many pallets as 7 or 8, but the trade off is bigger pallets. (Smile) Thanks for watching. Stay safe and healthy. Peace

I hope you aren't shooting 45 colts out of your Stoeger Coach Gun. .410 can be shot out of the heavier rifled barrel of guns chambered for both cartridges but chamber pressure of 45LC is too high for 410 shotguns and the bullet would not stabilize in a barrel without rifling. The Stoeger break action shotgun or any other 410 smoothbore shotgun can become damaged or worse and the accuracy is terrible anyway. Anyone reading this, please do not do this.

Ours is a 12 gauge, but lately I've been thinking about dropping down to a 20 as we ain't getting younger...you are correct that .410 can get it done, the common triple 0 shells pack a wallop at typical house distances...although we are the only two in house we keep the gun on safe, unlike racking a pump the safety is pretty quiet...it is a simple truth that even today no one wants to see the business end of a double barrel, double barrels have a huge psychological effect on folks...in that quick glance even .410 looks like a 4 gauge elephant gun screaming 'it gonna hurt real bad'...

Be careful when you alter a firearm (especially a safety mechanism). If you ever have to defend yourself the firearm will be examined and could make your case tougher.
Don't get me wrong. I love coach guns for what they are. Mostly for scaring the boys into behaving with your daughter, But if I'm grabbing a 410. It will be an AK holding 15 rounds in it.👍

I have exact shotgun still never shot it, had for 10 years, very stiff breaking cocking. Have lots lots ammo all kinds all shot- fire dragon- slugs-shot size 4-8 - 2 BB, and 4 BB, going to give to my daughter for fist gun. ITS REALLLY HEAVY GUN in weight-- and ODD to handle so need to cut stock and vent in , cut barrel down to18, at end of hand grip.
This is a very good first gun for home defense. Simple to use and with good shot placement very effective. As for the stiff break cocking action... There are things that can be done to smooth it out. If you have that set up for defense. Well snd good. The only thing I see is the safety modification if a slick attorney takes a civil or criminal action against you in a lawful shooting. He could use that modification against you and with some jury's it could go against you. Don't modify a firearm from factory specks ot come back and bite you.

I have the 20 ga. double defense. It has a lower rail for a light. A light is imperative at night. I was able to mount a light on my Mossy .410 pump. I don`t know how you could get a light on a coach gun.
I keep reading that one should not fire slugs or buckshot out of full choke barrels, like those. Are you doing it without any problems, including damage to the barrels?
Did you have to adjust the fore-end and replace the firing pins yet? I’m thinking of getting this in 12 gauge but I’m sure now if I have to change the pins and everything
