Building on the foundations of the city's bid to become UK City of Culture 2021, Stoke Creates was established as an engine for artistic, creative and cultural participation in the Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire city region to work towards our common goal of achieving 'place-based regeneration' for future generations. As a 'cultural compact', Stoke Creates brings together key partners and anchor organisations, including Arts Council England (ACE) National Portfolio holders, the local authority and YMCA North Staffordshire with representation from the Cultural Destinations Partnership and the local Chambers of Commerce. Its board is co-chaired by representatives from both Staffordshire and Keele Universities.
Becoming a designated WCC Craft City and working alongside the existing creative craft cities will help Stoke Creates to deliver its transformational mission. For the purposes of local government, Stoke-on-Trent City Council is a unitary authority and has the combined powers of a non-metropolitan county and district council. With a leading role in the City of Culture bid, the city council coordinated the development of a dedicated cultural strategy, Making a Creative City, to help shape and drive forward its ambitions for Stoke-on-Trent to be recognised and celebrated as 'a city of craft, a city of graft and a city of innovation'.
Capitalising on the city's newfound confidence and its future as a centre of art, craft and contemporary culture, a refreshed cultural strategy has been adopted which aligns with the WCC's growing awareness of the contribution of local authorities, craftspeople and communities to cultural, economic and social development.
Whilst this submission was led by Stoke Creates with the backing of the city council, Stoke-on-Trent has a distinct set of partners who continue to coalesce around a common 'Together We Make the City' theme steeped in the practice of doing and making as set out in the table below.
