The NYPD says that theft of services, such as not paying the subway fare, and other quality of life crimes can lead to bigger and more violent crimes in the subway system. Using last week's subway shooting in Brooklyn as an example, the NYPD is looking to remove more weapons from the subway system.

I jump every time those machines read No Bills or Credit only. And I tell them I'm doing it if they refuse to let me pass. NY and NYC law requires all business to accept cash or have a machine that will convert cash to debit type card for payment.

Hey Genius when was the last time you seen machines taking cash? The law requires all business to accept cash unless a machine is on site to convert cash to debt card. MTA for 3 moths have refused to service machines forcing one way only tickets @ 3.90 with no free 2 hr transfer to bus. And reduce fare cards are not usable to refill so instead of $1.45 it's $3.90. Stiffle yourself

Living in NY and riding the subway daily, I can tell you, 'they' range in all colors, creeds, ages, economic backgrounds that I've seen fare beat. I at times have to wonder why... As my luck is non existent, I'd be the one they catch, ticket and book, and lock (no criminal record) away for $2.90. Not worth it. 😁

Looks like the MTA and NYPD are treating fare evaders the same way as a traffic stop. If they catch you speeding, that could lead to additional charges if they find something during the stop. So if they catch a fare evader, that gives them an opportunity to see if you have warrants or something else they can arrest you on. That's what it looks like. Kinda like the stop and frisk, but legal lol

I don't think this is going to make any difference in crime, stop and frisk must come back.The NYPD is trying to justify the amounts of overtime and this isn't going to work out for not only them but the citizens who ride mass transit. The reason is the fares must be raised to cover the expenses despite the congestion plan which is a tax on drivers who already pay enough money with horrible roads and registrations which are criminal.
