I'm on a mission to make sure people know where their food comes from. So, today I'm joining Crabby Al to learn more about stone crabbing. Find out how stone crabs are sourced, prepared and eaten from the expert.
Nothing better than a smoked mullet. My grandfather had a net boat for many years. He would net and smoke mullet. Fresh mullet are good fried only if you fry them fresh. After about a day they are too strong to eat because they are an oily fish. Fresh fried they are as good as catfish. Served with grits and hush puppies you can’t beat them.
Thanks for this video. I am going to Tampa on a fishing trip this month. I was hoping to catch and cook a few stone crab while there. I learned a lot thank you.
Brings back memories. I lived there in the eighties and early nineties. Had a friend named Hammer that had a crab shack out on Handy. Helped him run traps sometimes. Good times. Be careful out there.
Man I'm watching Al in action and I can tell he's an experienced crabber! I love crabbing! I'm just a recreational crabber. I love to see guys crabbing and you definitely have a new subscriber! Keep the videos coming!
I'm pretty sure you have to pull these manually or else you will be considered a commercial vessel. Awesome video, and very informative throughout. Definitely experienced crabber.
It has nothing to do with how you pull them I know guys that pull 300 traps by hand and its commercial residential, you’re allowed 5 traps per person if you have salt water fishing license how you pull them dose not matter
they find plenty of food, as scavengers. Without claws, they go into a more defensive mode and hide behind rocks, but can still find plenty of food. Ideally, you'd only remove one claw, but every now and then, if jumbo, the crabber will take both. It's a debatable topic for sure.
@@FishmongerApproved I actually thought it was a law that you can only keep one claw. I pot fish conch ( whelk) and Blue Crab in Cape May NJ but I’m relocating to our winter home in Naples this spring and would like to stone crab fish
What he didn’t mention is that up to 63% of the crabs die when both claws are removed and up to 41% when just a single claw is removed…no matter how carefully they’re taken off.
I`m sure this guy has pulled a many of Traps. But he should have Gauge the Claw before he took it and when he did gauge that Claw it looked like it Fell on the Short side. Makes you wonder how many Short Claws get taken. just so you know it I am a Freshwater, Saltwater Fisherman.
Hey Al, Why is it that you can take both claws on a legal crab and other people can't?? Is it because you are a Commercial Crabber? Or because pf the insane laws are for recreational crabbers?
Crabs find other ways to defend themselves while claws grow back. They hide behind rock and find plenty of food to scavenge on. It’s debatable for sure. But legal
Darla the FWC which is a highly regulated agency for Florida wildlife permits both claws, they go into scavenger mode and hunker down eating algae and easy access food until claws grow back (which they do).
@@walterschaaf605 and you know this HOW. THEY WERE GIVEN TWO CLAWS FOR A REASON IF YOU LOST BOTH YOUR ARMS THE ONLY WAY YOU WOULD SURVIVE IS IF SOME ONE FED YOU CHANGED YOUR DYPER THERE IS A HUMANE WAY TO GET THE CRAB TO DROP-ITS CLAW BUT IF YOU HAVE TO USE IT TAKE ONE CLAW IVE FISHED ALL MY LIFE AND I DO EAT CRAB DONT GET ME WRONG BUT TO JUST RIP THE CLAWS OFF IS CRUEL
Did he just snap of both claws and throw it back saying its still alive? Not for long, u just took it hunting and defense equipment.. they need months for a regeneration care package from god
Pretty sure that ol Al here knows whats best for mr crabby. You see if the crab couldnt defend itself they'd all die and Ol Al here wouldnt get a paycheck. Therefor I believe that that there crab with no claws will be just fine. Mr crabby can grow multiple sets of claws per year, therefor mr crabby only has to hide in his hole down there for alittle while witthout weapons of defense. Im sorry that you never learned this during you days on the SPB as you could have been eating twice as nice. If it were not good for mr crabby the regulations would be different to insure there survival. This concludes todays lesson on Ol Al the crabber, the facts stated above are also why I do believe your opinion on Ol Al the crabber being a jerk is not intirely acurate. Good day to you fine sir. Stay well and god bless

@@FishmongerApproved As a recreational dungeness crabber in WA who will be moving to FL this year, I appreciate all the questions and inside information that was shared. Great video, thank you! 🦀🦀🦀
