In this series Sam's checking out a few of the pedals available from Stone Deaf, and in this video we're looking at the Fig Fumb Paracentric Fuzz Filter, more info here: www.pmtonline....
The Fig Fumb, a cheeky little anagram of Big Muff, was inspired by the tones and circuitry of those classic Electro-Harmonix fuzz pedals, but takes it a step further by adding a paracentric EQ and noise gate, to offer some pretty powerful tone-shaping capabilities.
Control-wise, first up there’s a Fuzz knob, which dials in the amount of that creamy fuzz, and also increases sustain the more you turn it up. Next is a Gate knob, which adjust the threshold of the built-in noise gate, allowing you to tame high gain settings without choking tone, and it’s also great for creating that lo-fi dying battery fuzz effects. To add to it’s versatility, the noise gate is also foot switchable with a dedicated LED indicator.
So moving on to the EQ controls, as mentioned earlier, the Fig Fumb features a paracentric EQ allowing you to dial in a certain frequency to boost or cut. When there’s a lot going on, a Big Muff fuzz can sometimes get a little lost or sound a bit weak, as they tend to scoop the mid-range frequencies a little too much, but you won’t get that problem with the Fig Fumb as you can really tweak and tailor those frequencies to cut through the mix, great for creating those mid-heavy cocked wah style tones. The Frequency knob allows you to set the frequency that you wish to cut or boost, ranging from 35 hertz up to 6 kilohertz, the Cut/Boost knob controls by how much that frequency is enhanced or reduced, with a plus or minus 20 db range, and the 5-position bandwidth selector sets the Q factor of the boost or cut, ranging from thin to fat bandwidths. It’s also possible to connect an expression pedal to control some of these elements, turning the Fig Fumb into a fuzz wah or univibe style fuzz phaser, but do bear in mind, it will only work with the optional Stone Deaf EP-1 active expression pedal. Finally for the controls, there’s a balance knob which adjusts the overall volume of the effect.
The pedal itself looks great on your pedalboard with it’s funky cartoon graphics and it’s got a really solid, sturdy housing. Finally, there’s a super transparent buffered bypass switch and the pedal can be powered by either a 9 volt power supply or a battery.
