Stone Soup Grows Up! Broken Torsion Bar Replacement, Carb "Fix", And More For This 1962 Dodge Lancer

In this video: how to replace a classic Mopar torsion bar; Holley 1920 rebuild tips and internal circuit identification; classic Mopar ignition circuit description and identification; early A body and B body Mopar size comparison; responses to comments on previous Stone Soup videos; and much more.
Well, this is it. I think. Maybe. I might be done with my part of the Stone Soup project for ‪@DiecastDreamCustoms‬ . Now that I say that, I've realized there are at least five other things I should probably do. Like, for example, smash the Holley 1920 with a hammer like I promised in the last video, and install something that sucks less. Anyway, for today, let's see about chipping away at some of the biggest problems on the Lancer, and try to achieve my goal of making it decent enough to drive onto a trailer and out of my life.
There is so much left to do on this car. We'd need a piece of cardboard as tall as my shop to write out everything that needs to be done. But compared to what we started with, it's really getting places. So I guess I'll just sit back and revel in that achievement.
The next channels that will have videos on Stone Soup are ‪@heavensmopars‬ , ‪@thejunkyardnecromancer‬ , and... ‪@rocketresto‬ ?

I don't get it, man... are they jealous that other folks are doing something fun? Who cares how it starts out? Community isn't about GETTING. It's about GIVING. I personally feel blessed and honored that so many folks are coming out of the woodwork to help with this project. You've given it a good start to be sure, but you're just the first stop! Let's see what it really needs, eh? Tires? (taken care of down the line). Floors? (Again...taken care of). Brakes? We've got a volunteer for those. Electrical? Yep...a guy in Indiana is going to re-harness it. People from all over these beautiful states are willing to throw just a little bit of time, effort and maybe a busted knuckle or two to help create a work of resurrected automotive art. The naysayers can't seem to see the bigger picture. Ignore them and they'll fade in to the corn like Shoeless Joe. Jamie, I am honestly blown away by the things that you're capable of. The problem with so many mechanics (at least, that I've discovered over the years) is 1.) They can't admit when they're wrong and 2.) none of them know of a time when they WERE wrong. The beauty of what you do (and why I think your channel is surging in popularity) is that you can clearly admit when you're wrong and don't make a spectacle when you're right. This is an awesome thing that you're doing and we're proud that you're our first stop. Thank you so much for even considering it, let alone doing all that you've done for our channel and the community in general. -Vic and Foggy, FUNCTIONAL HISTORIES

This car is definitely worth saving. It's a piece of history, a totally weirdly styled Mopar that was built when JFK was president. It definitely needs a lot of work, but like you said there are far worse. At least the basic structure is pretty good. The broken torsion bar reminds me of a 66 Belvedere I bought once that had a broken bar. I replaced it and then resold the car, and then I used the remains of the bar as a pry bar. I just reshaped the broken end into a sharp wedge, and I still have it today. My Mopar bar is with me for life!

for carb rebuilds- I started using vinegar as carb dip. It does a good job of cleaning out the garbage. Side note- using an old dawn soap bottle full of gas is a good way to fill the bowl via the carb vents and spraying gas down the carb to get an old clapper to fire off.

Back when the '71 Challenger was my daily driver i had a torsion bar snap while I was driving. It sounded like a rifle shot going off. Car still drove but the tire started scraping the wheel well when turning even a little. There was no internet or youtube (or DDG!). I had the FSM but no special tools. It took me hours to replace that bar even using my uncle's shop's lift (and in fact he came over to help with his persuader (5 lb fist maul) and mega-vise-grip to get the stubs out. The new one went in easier.... I kept the pieces for years until they were stolen from our garden shed... I like the idea of a sledge hammer handle. I also like the idea of forging them into a dagger and a sword if I still had them ;) Really glad you're doing this and that the car is getting a new lease on life.

I like these... There is a guy in our Turbo-Mopar club that shortened the roofline, made it look more like a coupe since the bean counters at Chrysler wanted to use the 4 door roofline. He also added that auto-spoiler from a Chrysler Crossfire and inegrated it into the the deck lid. I believe the power plant was a built 2.4 Turbo, that was from an SRT Neon. All you need is imagination and the willingness to do the work and execute your vision, definitely better than a sea of Mustangs, Camaros, Chevelles etc... all lined up at car shows. I love the oddball stuff, it's cool to dare to be different.

I think you have donated the ‘meat and potatoes’. It’s sad to me that people cannot see the potential in anything…They just have no vision. Sometimes they can be so narrow minded that they can see through a keyhole with both of their eyes. 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️ I’m excited to see the transformation of it, as each channel contributes , although I already know who is going to donate what… 👍 I may have a radiator and a steering column for it! 😉 I won’t be needing those since my ‘62 Valiant will be getting blessed with a 340/4-speed down the road when I have time…😃

I like early A bodies so I am not impartial ;) I like this video series and it's fun with the idea to pass it around to different channels, the moss give it character, to be honest I think the reason I like them is that they are so simple, there are 5 cables or so going to the back, the electrical schematics are 3 pages (1 extra page for station wagon), you need 3 wrenches and a screwdriver to take it apart, ok the older ones sometimes need a ham... sledge hammer for calibration, be careful with the sun Jamie, you are not used to it...

Knowing that that model was only made for 2 years as well as the Valiant version, I don't understand why there isn't more interest in these limited production cars. Seems to me that since there were fewer of them than say the Dart that folks would like the least available classic more. I meant to reach out a few days ago but forgot. I have an early A-body Carter BBS (looks brand new or rebuilt) that I picked up when looking for one for a '70 Dart (before I snagged that 318 and cast 833OD from you). Not planning to use it. It's yours if you want it.
