From Stone Sour's 2012 album The House of Gold and Bones Pt. 1. Tuning is Drop C#. I do not own any rights to this song, this song is merely for instructional purposes only.
The audio you are hearing is from a Boss GT-6 effects processor. The amp in the video is only on as a monitor for myself while recording the video. The amp is a Mesa Boogie F-50.
Just a thought, I think you're tuned to half step down drop D, but Jim Root goes standard C# for this tune, so all the strings would be dropped a tone and a half. It's how he gets the harmonics lick leading into the solo
Great, so tune it like you think Jim does (and I've seen this/heard this comment multiple times regarding this song over the years) and see if you can make that work and sound like the album.... Nope. Edit: I tried this and it didn't sound right...(years ago) But after looking closer just now, you're right. Now I gotta try it again.. 😋
That really does depend on the particular song, and the difficulty (and number) of the guitar parts within a song. But, just guessing... I can typically learn a song with somewhat difficult parts within a few days (maybe 3-6 hours of total time?) Once I learn a song, I then play it several times every day until I feel like I have mastered it, or at least as close as possible before I record it.
Yes. The intonation is hard to get "perfect" with the stock SE bridge. However, I was able to get it nearly perfect on mine after several adjustments. I would recommend a bridge upgrade though... it would definitely help. Perhaps a bridge with individual string adjustments? I've heard the TonePro bridges are great. I just haven't gotten annoyed enough with mine to justify buying a new bridge myself.
Do you have trouble with getting the correct intonation with that guitar and that tuning? I have that guitar and have it tuned to drop B and to get the intonation even close to being correct the top end of the tailpiece has to be wound back as far away from the neck as possible. Which then causes the strings to be off center to the polls on the bridge pick up.. Anyway... Thinking of getting a RezoMax wrap bridge.. Any ideas?
