She wasn't trying to copy Joplin. She was just as original as Joplin. The thing is, a certain "sound" in music at a point in time can become popular. Her sound and Joplin's sound was popular in the 70's. They were both original. If you stop comparing her to other artists and just listen and appreciate her talent, you will get more from her music. She is still great today.

Saw Wings at the Cow Palace in San Francisco...we were maybe 20 feet from the stage and Jimmy was rt in front of us....that kid was sheer talent!!! Another underrated guitar player gone to dam soon!
That's Jimmy McCullough on guitar--I probably misspelled his last name--who went on to play in Paul McCartney's band Wings. STC's first guitarist was Les Harvey. He died tragically as others commenting here have already made mention. Like Scot Rock? Give the Alex Harvey Band a listen.
That Firebird is a limited edition from 1972, recognizable by the gold plaque on the upper front of the body. I'll never forget how I played one of those at the music store "No. 1" in Hamburg in 1981, which was the place to go in Germany in those days if you were looking for vintage and rare guitars. I had only been playing for a few years and just discovered Johnny Winter, so it was my dream guitar at the time. Of course I couldn't afford it.
Saw them for the first time on 04/04/1970 at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester NY. They were the opening act for Ten Years After. A great CONCERT. I have every album by both groups. Also have some concerts by both groups on DVD.
I had a vest almost identical to the guitarist's back in the 70's. It was two tone blue with a lego like car on it. Even made it onto one of my school pics. Of course I was eight at the time.
i bought the Maggie Bell album in the 70's at a hippy store(US not UK) 'cause i liked her looks/tuff chick.i've had to learn where these great musicians came from 'cause they were not played in America back in the 70's.I'm blown away at how good they are live,OMG!

First band I ever saw live in 1972 I think it was, Torquay Town Hall. Les Harvey was on guitar, they were brilliant, a fantastic introduction to rock music for a 16 year old lad!
I saw Stone The Crows and Ballin' Jack opening for Lee Michaels at the Monterey Fairgrounds in the horse arena on a Saturday afternoon the summer of 1970. What a thrill that day was.
Ballin' Jack! Bought their debut album at a time when horn bands were still around. Chicago, Tower of Power, Sons of Champlin, Blood, Sweat and Tears (the Al Kooper version, not that David Clayton Thomas crap) and some I can't recall right now. Now that sound is sampled and used as an afterthought instead of being an integral part of the group. Man, I miss the music parties of my youth when everybody brought an album and we'd listen to at least one side of each disc. And that cider-jug pipe with the four tubes and the bowl filled with...you know what!
@@jefferyroy2566 Didn't do any album listening parties. Lots of parties where playing albums was the thing. Most the time, listening to music was putting an album on the Harmon-Kardon, Sony, Kenwood, Marantz or Pioneer with some nice floor speakers and listening to a whole side or two up loud while you went about your daily routine. But watching Burt Sugarman's Midnight Special (began as a regular series February 2, 1973) and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert (premiered September 27, 1973) were phenomenal. A lot of that is on RU-vid now and will take you back to when American rock all began.
@@namewithheldbyrequest1218 For its first couple of years, Midnight Special would feature groups and artists than spanned a variety of genres. In 1973, Focus performed Hocus Pocus in 12/8 time (I think) and it felt like their equipment was going to catch fire! It is on YT and I'm going to watch it for the 1,001st time after this reply is finished. Anyone from The Ohio Players to Black Oak Arkansas to Helen Reddy to Mott The Hoople could be in the lineup. I missed most of the 1975 season, but by 1976 there was too much Captain & Tennile, KC & The Sunshine Band and Bread. For some reason, I can't recall much from the Kirshner show even though I watched it when the Special got too sappy. They last thing I do recall is Be Bop Deluxe was granted a short segment in 1977 just before their unfortunate breakup. Why episodes from both those shows are not available for digital acquisition is beyond frustrating.
Look up Lydia Pense with Cold Blood. She was Janis Joplin's roommate and played the San Francisco bay area in the 1970s. Saw her a couple of years ago at the Seaside, Ca. summer blues festival.
saw this band around this time with Jimmy on guitar although it was obviously Maggie Bell that stood out. What an incredible show that I will always remember as outstanding, doing a full 2 hours as the support band didn’t turn up - Leeds Poly.

Such a pity the fight went out of them after Les's death, though completely understandable. Jimmy here absolutely tears it up - they could surely have had a great career with him.

It’s because you’re American most likely. Sadly never really made it in the States. Also sadly, they are only known in the US for Alex Harvey’s brother Les joining “The 27 Club” by being electrocuted onstage in 1972. Before YT, this is the only reason I’d heard of them without actually hearing them.
