Description - I had a conversation with Pop Stoneman, I Believe it was Sunset Park and I asked him how did he manage to get all his children to play music , he said he would put all the instruments in his bedroom and tell his kids not to touch 'em Lo & Behold everytime He turned his back they be in that bedroom trying to play them.......The Stoneman family and different members played the D.C. and Baltimore area for quite a spell..

I know Pop Stoneman is in the Country Music Hall Of Fame but I think the whole Stoneman Family should be in the Hall Of Fame!!

I saw them at Independence, VA High School, after Pop passed away. Thank You, Lord, for taking me there. So good.

I knew several of the Stonemans. There was a group of them that traveled around playing coffee houses and other places that hired folk/bluegrass groups. This group consisted of Pop Stoneman, Roni, Donna, Van, Jimmy and Scotty. Pop showed me how to play the autoharp. I was more interested in the banjo. My group played alternate sets with the Stonemans at several local (Houston) venues. When they played, I sat ringside and watched what Roni's hands were doing. She told me that I needed to talk to Scotty, because he was the one who taught her to play the banjo. Scotty gave me a banjo lesson that took years off my learning curve. Van helped me set up a dobro. They were my friends. Scotty is gone now, as are Pop and some of the others, but I'll never forget how nice they were.

I am so proud of them! They are cousins on my mom's side of the family and now I know where my love of Bluegrass came from; the Stonemans!

Izit Over I share some of that pride. I own a piece of land near the Iron Ridge Mission on what used to be known as the Muddy Road. Right after I bought the place I was told that Pop Stoneman once owned it. That may not sound like a big deal but I feel somehow a sense of pride to think my little acre in the woods might be a piece of music history

Hattie Frost Stoneman was my 2nd Cousin 2x removed. Hattie's grandmother, Mahala Wilson Frost, was the sister of my 2nd great-grandfather, Nathaniel Gardner Wilson.

I remember their syndicated TV show, circa 1967 - 1970. Loved it!!! I remember very well one of the first appearances of Tammy Wynette was on their show, and she performed a Loretta Lynn hit.

I think it's very sad that MOST of the currant population of Galax, Virginia doesn't even know......or even want to admit the great heritage of the Stonemans!!! Most of them that do know are people who have lived here their entire life, or has had some connection with the music & people of the area. A few attempts have been made to honor Pop in the Galax area....but none of them really panned out to be anything. :-/ Galax could really grow and have it's place in country music if they tapped into what the Stoneman's did. You can see many of the people who have been influenced by the Stoneman's play at my family's business, The Stringbean CoffeeShop, at our Tuesday night jams!!!! +Stringbeancoffee

For those unfamiliar with country music, this is why Pop Stoneman made it into the Country Hall of Fame early on!

Was this from a "Life and Times" episode? If so, could you upload the whole thing?
