This video shows me making a very nice piece of cornice over the course of a week. The project is made from Portland limestone which is a lovely material to work with. It hold fine detail and looks great when rubbed.
The music is by the very talented Mackenzie Rhythm Section who have very Kindly allowed me to use their track "Clarice". Please feel free to subscribe to their youtube channel or listen to their music on iTunes and Spotify.

And of course, subscribe to my youtube channel for more masonry videos. (If any bands out there would like me to feature their music on one of my videos, please get in touch!)

Fantastic work Tom. Love the Portland - classic architectural stone of many British landmarks. I love seeing the way you use power tools, air tools and hand tools. Great stuff!

Great work Tom! I have to say! Im a stonemason myself from Denmark. You work very effectively! Im not a fan of the stone though, It looks way too uniform and boring. My favorite sandstone is Obernkirchern Sandstone, from Germany! Used for most castles in Denmark as a substitute for the old Gotland sandstone from Sweden, since there is nothing left! Once again ! Greatwork Tom!

Absolutely love it. Is an air hammer worth investing in? Can you list what blades and where you buy them some time? Incredible work.

I would say, if you work in a production set up, then absolutely yes you should get a air gun, if you work as a hobby then its expensive but will reduce the time it takes to remove material substantially. I've done a tool focus video on pneumatic hammers if you want to find out a bit more. Im using a standard flush cut 4.5 inch blade that is intended for granite so it has a soft diamond compound which always keep the diamonds exposed. You can get them from any stone tool suppliers here in the uk but it may be a little harder to get hold of dependant on where in the world you are. The 9" blade Im using is a segmented flush cut blade, also intended for granite. Im nit using one in this video, but often when I am working limestone (like Portland in this video) I use a vanity blade which has vacuum braised diamonds over the whole surface of the blade which makes it a dream for both cutting and grinding.

@@mainstonecarving excellent, thanks for the answer. Do you have a preferred website or merchant for the flush cutting blades? Is the tool focus video up loaded? I enjoy using hand tools as much as possible, but sometimes speed dictates the method. Thanks again for the info

Now do it without electricity and only copper tools. Like the ancients. 🧐

I seriously dont know how people can do this kind of work and having to wear a mask and all the other safety stuff for hours getting absolutely covered in dust, nope, no thanks 😭. My nightmare.

Yeah, definitely not for everyone. Equally I couldn’t stand working in an office. One the bright side, wearing a mask over the covid period was absolutely no issue. 😂
