I know that encapsulating fear of certain things in a video might seem overly simplistic, but no matter what it is that your cat is afraid of, it definitely couldn’t hurt to try these hints - and don’t forget if it’s a person, another cat or dog - there are more specific videos about that on this channel. Thanks for joining the chat, and don’t forget to put suggestions for more videos in the comments!

We adopted a cat Pansy and when we took her to the vet he said he took care of her when she was rescued. She was severely abused. She was so afraid of everything but especially hands. I vowed I would help her get over the flinching every time she saw a hand. It took over a year and a lot of love but I could eventually raise my hand like I was going to slap her and she would sit up on her hind paws give love blinks and meet my hand to get petted. She never had a hand on her in anger again in her life.

We foster and bottle feed often, and one of our foster fails was hit by a car when she was only a few weeks old. She's very touchy about a number of things, and big sounds terrify her. Fortunately, she took a liking to our grumpy old man cat that we adopted, and though he hates kittens, she cuddled him into submission. He's her security blanket now when we take them to the vet, etc.

The tube treats have helped me alot with my youngest cat in my cat family (one br + one sr from same litter = one baby) they are all fixed now...but Tazzy got extremely aggressive with her dad (uncle) after I divorced....my ex husband was her human but since I promised the young man that rescued them I would never separate them there was no way I could take only one or two...so they are all thriving, they have a cat-io, three floor condo, tons of cat tvs, four cat trees, three water fountains, four cat boxes, tons of interactive toys but favorites are fishing rod type toys and means three hours of individual times especially and flipping in the air....but when Tazzy is getting aggressive toward her father,,,then I feed them with the same tube treats and she forgets the aggression. They will never be lap cats from trauma before I adopted them, but we have our bonding time individually and together everyday...Your videos have helped so much. Thank you Jackson...I love my cat family!

A sudden noise or abrupt movement used to send my furbabe sweetie into hiding. We started smiling at him, saying " oh. It's ok, see, it's just a fork that dropped." Or " that was a fire truck. It's ok, we're safe." Now, before he runs, he looks to us for reassurance. We always give it, he relaxes again and stays put. Love building that trust bond!

My tabby Honey would like react that way. He’ll run or remain hunch stunned for a moment. Sometimes if he’s near looking for attention he’s like that, just the slightest movement like he’s making sure what’s happening, what to do, etc. I have no clue how to rem say it. I know he ain’t afraid of me, but at times he’ll turn to go somewhere, he’ll hunch stop again like figuring out where to go, but he’ll usually be like he’s accepted that I’ve got him/going to pick him up. So yeah, I don’t know, we’ve had him a long time, he has his brother Buddy, (non tabby) but he’s skinny, not the best eating habit…..

@@5idi Not sure what you mean without a trigger. He’s been to the vet plenty for check-ups, shots, etc. He doesn’t have much wrong with him except that perhaps he might not eat much (I’m honestly not sure who eats how much because 2 other of 4 eat some from the same 2 dish bowl) and I forgot what it was that it hurts him taking a dump on the litter box, the vet knows that, too. We already give him a medication for that, budesonide/metronidazole 20mg/40mg/ml. He gets 0.5 ml orally daily.

All my previous family cats have been terrified of vacuums and I felt so bad when they would bolt as soon as I touched it. When we adopted our two kittens, we were determined to not have them get massively stressed out every time we cleaned. I let them inspect it for a good 15 minutes completely off. After they were bored of it I would turn it on for a very short amount of time, slowly building up to pushing it around. We NEVER chase them and make sure they have plenty of time to see where we're going. I am so happy they do not run in terror whenever we vacuum, and there are even times they will sit right next to the rug we're cleaning and just watch. So proud of our girls!! 🥰

I have one cat who has the opposite problem; he thinks he's 10 feet tall and bulletproof! Nothing scares him! I got him 6 years ago from a family expecting a baby. They wanted him gone because they were afraid of him. He would go out and catch snakes. He brought a live rattlesnake into their house and that was the last straw. When I heard they wanted to find him a home, I was thrilled! I fell in love with this big boy the first time I met him. He's a character and very smart. Nice to know if a snake finds it's way into my house again, he's on it! 3 times I found snakes in my kitchen before I discovered the installers of the stove cut the gas-line hole too big and rodents and snakes were able to get in. Yikes! He only goes outside with supervision here, because we are a remote, off-grid goat ranch and have problems with predators; mountain lions, bobcat, coyotes... I used to have problems with mice in the house but Maverick has solved that! He also is proof that you can teach cats to do tricks. When I put on my jacket with thick shoulder padding and give him the signal, he jumps onto my left shoulder and wraps himself around my head. Actually, he taught ME that trick, because I was so charmed the first time he did it, of course I gave him a treat! Now he knows how to get a special kitty-yum-yum and extra attention for himself. So far, he's only done it when I have the thick jacket on, thankfully. He's got big paws and claws! I love him so much. 😻

Our cat Milo who is almost 16 still gets easily frightened by strange, sudden, loud noises. And he is especially fearful of any visitors he doesn't know or hasn't seen in a while. In fact I can be holding him (which he loves) and if someone stops by he gets so scared he frantically fights his way out of my arms to the floor, runs faster than lightening with smoke coming off his paws to the basement to hide!! Then when we all pretend we forgot about him, he slowly sneaks back upstairs with gut to the floor, peeks in at us and sometimes enters the room. I have often quoted to him, "Milo..you have nothing to fear but fear itself". Ha Ha
@robingray5037
@robingray5037 2 года назад
I make friends with cats like your dear Milo by playing the game, "ignore the kitty". Cats are predators AND prey food. Anything larger than them is a potential predator. So ignoring the kitty means, to the cat, I am not going to eat them. Eventually, if we make any eye contact, I do slow blink and look away. Most cats start to lose their fear and start to sniff me. The only time I touch a cat is after they rubbed against me. Then, I only put out a finger and let them rub against it. If you haven't already, ask your guests to do this game. It may help him. Oh, and dropping those special treats that only "appear" when other humans are there, dropped by a guest as Milo appraoches. Good luck! And thanks for taking care of Milo so well. 16 is getting up there in age!

Great video as always, Jackson! I’d love to see videos in the future on: > Cat teenage transition and managing that stress around the house (there is surprisingly little info out there on the 8mo to 12 mo range; most info is on new kittens or adults) > Mending past kitty traumas you may or may not be aware of; we have a cat who exhibits signs of claustrophobia, especially in being held, in a carrier, or even in a closed room > What to do when your cat gets bored of their favorite toys > Silvervine, Catnip, and other cat stimulants And a more personal one - my 10 mo. kitten is SUPER fixated on our 10 yr. adult cat, even though she’s made it clear she wants her space. He won’t back down, no matter how much she stands her ground, and eventually bullies her into running. He’ll bolt over when she’s using the litter box (which makes her hover butt and pee outside of it), but she’s otherwise fine with him - if he’d just leave her alone. She watched him play, they bat at each other from different height levels, and she’ll watch him sleep in his living room bed. What can we do about him fixating so hard on her, when she’s clearly communicating otherwise?
@JacksonGalaxy

Hey there and thanks for the suggestion. About your situation - adopt another young cat! 10 months and 10 years is a pretty huge gap when it comes to the need to expel energy, to learn how to play etc. Just go for a cat a little younger than your youngest or around his/her age, and that will help your older cat to keep his/her sanity immensely!
@tundrawomansays5067
@tundrawomansays5067 2 года назад
As soon as his focus becomes laser fixed, good luck because he’s on it. Look at what behavior immediately precedes the fixated stare and intervene there before his body releases all kinds of stress hormones/fight/flight/predatory behavior. Intervene at 5 not 10. Yes, you have to really pay attention and then distract with treats, attention etc. Good luck.

@@JacksonGalaxy such a great suggestion. We had a female kitty around 10 months old and she was starting to get bored and lazy- wouldn’t show interest in play much. So we got a two month old little boy as a companion for her, and it’s really helped a lot with her energy and to take his energy out. He’s now 8 months old and goes on walks every day- she doesn’t care to go outside lol but it helps keep the rough housing at bay. They just play with toys together now and it’s so cute. Two kitties around the same age is great.

I've found my indoor cat was getting board with his toys. So I began putting them away and rotating them. Now whenever I pull out a toy, he's so excited to play! And then since I rotate them, he keeps his interest in them too. Sometimes there's one toy he just doesn't care for anymore. So then I look for a replacement that he might like more. I've also made treats into play time. So I don't give treats unless I put them in a cardboard puzzle box for cats, or puzzle balls. Cats are so smart, he has learned sit and to come when I call him.

Jackson, I have 3 cats - mamma and her two kiddos. Mamma is a secure cat who came to my back yard 8 years ago, She brought her 2 kittens with her - Mini and Boo. They lived a feral life outside for a few months before I could get them all inside. It was difficult to secure the trust of the kittens but now, Mini understands that I absolutely love her - only took about 6 years - lol. Boo loves me, loves to be petted and loves to be brushed but...any sound - the door opening, the door bell, footsteps of the wood floor, sneezes - all ordinary day to day sounds - scare him into hiding. He also gets triggered with quick movements around him. I feel so bad for him - he is this big, wonderful, loving cat that spends much of his time anxious. I try to respect his fears and talk gently, move slowly and pet him whenever he is secure on my bed. He gets lots of love, as do the other two, but he is just not secure in his fur! His sister, Mini, is a little triggered by visitors and will go and hide with him if she feels it is necessary, but is much more willing to come out to say hello - from a careful distance - to a familiar voice. Is there anything that I can do to help him feel better? They are now 8yrs old and fairly set in their ways. I would just love to see him less reactive. Any suggestions?

My 2 year old cat, Cecil Eugene, is my ESA companion. He goes with me to therapy appointments and sometimes travels with me across state lines. Generally speaking, he does great! He likes going outside, he’s well mannered, bright- however, how do I help him build more confidence in large public environments like- say, a hospital? I’ve been taking him to a converted hospital where I attend therapy. He generally does great when we sit on the couch. I bring his favorite toys and his favorite treats while he sits in his spot and I go through EMDR/talk therapy. After a year he finally took a treat from my therapist, which felt like a big plus. My senior cat (16), Hunter Dean, was my ESA before but he also used to live outdoors for at least 10 years of his life. He is bullet proof. Nothing bothers him! He loves walking wherever I take him (he doesn’t let his old joints slow him down lol)- he is very vocal when he doesn’t like something (like automatic doors) or Petsmart lol. But I don’t really credit myself with his confidence. He walks around in the hospital halls on his leash and is cautious of people. So I’m sort of befuddled on how to help Cecil. I have a cat backpack- which is his safe spot. So if he feels too nervous he just jumps inside- which means, the moment I exit the car, walk up the ramp, and enter the hospital or when I leave the therapist’s office or if someone approaches. Maybe it’s a pride thing lol 😂 I’m not sure how it would fly if I whip out a toy for Cecil in the hospital hallway as he’s more motivated by toys than treats.

I had an interesting situation this week related to fear and one of my cats. We took our kitten to be spayed. While the kitten was at the vet, our other cat was totally freaked out. She had severe separation anxiety and seemed traumatized by her sister’s absence. She also hissed at me and chattered at me like she was afraid of me. I guess thats because I’m the one that put the kitten in the carrier and took her out of the house. Once the kitten came home, our older cat went mostly back to normal. But I wish I had a strategy for helping her not be so afraid during that time. And it was frustrating that she saw me as the bad guy during the whole situation.

i'm nowhere near as good with cats as jackson but try talking gently to the scared cat. i know it sounds a little nutty but taking a moment to say, "we are going to ____ we will bring your sister back soon!" seems to make a big different with my cats. i think it is in the tone of voice rather than the words that reassures my cats. and when i do bring the other cat back home, announcing it again. "___ is home! everything is ok!" i hope others can also give helpful advice : ]

@@jdtmb Thanks so much for sharing! I think talking them through it, in a calm and reassuring way, is a great suggestion. Thanks so much. My boy, (Bandit K Panther) became absolutely terrified of one particular feather wand toy, after hurting himself when we played with it. After that, any sight or sound of it = flat ears + gone under the bed. I left it for a bit, then put it on the floor, other side of the room. Have slowly migrated it to near the sofa, so he now walks and lays down on it, but I sti!l can't pick it up without him scarpering into the bedroom. But will use your challenge line and bribery to see if we can take it further. Thanks again for addressing this issue, and all the best to you.

Great video. I've had to do a number of things to handle fear in our family. One of my boys is so close to me that I can quell his fear just by holding him and telling him it's okay, but another one of my cats took a lot of time and patience to even come out from under the bed. It's very rewarding to see that fear turn to trust and confidence. By the way, I don't know if this really fits the channel, but if you could give some suggestions for dealing with the loss of a pet and handling your own grief and the grief of your animals, I would appreciate it. One of our very first bottle-fed babies just passed away at six, several months ago, and I'm still reeling. We brought his brother in after, and he rested his head on his brother's foot and just stayed like that for a long time, while I sobbed hysterically. I think he's taking it well, but I worry sometimes. Not to mention, I'm gonna have to go through this again and again, and one of our bonded pairs is a two-year-old and a 13-year-old, so that's gonna be a tough one when the time comes.

My kitten (5 months old) FREAKED OUT when I started doing vocal and -especially- breathing exercises for my singing. Yes- don't laugh- my voice is not out of tune- I do it professionally :P hehe. Since I got her I was taking a break from singing and this is why I never did warm-ups before, but now I need to start again. I ll watch your videos about fear but I have to say that I have never heard/seen my cat (or ANY other cat) react in that freaked out manner. I got terrified by her reaction and our relationship got weird for 2 whole days. She didn't want me to pet her. Probably the breathing exercises sound provoked some ancestral, wild cat reaction.

My 3-year-old cat loves it when I sing and do vocal exercises - she tries to get her little face as close to my mouth as possible. When my voice lessons have to move to Zoom because of Covid, she spends my whole lesson winding herself around my ankles. She is, however, terrified of the piano and runs from the room whenever I play.

But when a stranger or my daughter comes over he hides and has huge eyes. So this is a perfect video I need. I love this very much; I have an anxious cat who has the most sensitive ears of any cat I have ever known. Recently we've had construction noise on either side of us, AND some car nearby backfires every couple days. My cat has gotten more used to some sounds that used to scare her, like our heater running, but the backfiring is by nature out of nowhere, then it's gone again. I'm not quite sure how to deal with those one-off noises. She's in the midst of being diagnosed with Pandora Syndrome and I've told her vet that I think she got a lot worse after about a month with a lot of really loud noises nearby. It may be that she ends up on some kind of anti-anxiety or antidepressant, but if we can take the edge off something, it would be great. She's an unnervingly smart, very sweet, very athletic little (indoor) hunter-creature and I don't want to waste her life letting her be needlessly afraid.

For us using "jackpots" only when doing sometime uncomfortable didn't work. Our cat is too smart and she would just start associating the treat with the unpleasant things and run away when we took the treats out. We probably had to push her too hard and the treat wasn't worth it (this happened when carrier training and there were instances when we had to carry her in it even though she wasn't that comfortable in it) but I just wanted to put this out there that this might happen.

Thanks Jackson - so cool that you covered the ceiling fan fear, one of our newly adopted previously feral kittens had this problem during his first month at our home. He started off spitting, hissing and jumping down two flights of stairs when the overhead fan was turned on - a few months later with a lot of the technique that you covered in this video he is 90% better, occasionally he meows at it but more out of curiosity than fear. His brother never had a fear of the fan but he is afraid of a lot of other things - especially anything black and possibly also afraid of the dark which is odd for a cat. We thought this was weird until we read other people have seen this fear of black objects with their cats too. It especially bothers him if the object is half hidden - for example the black remote control falls into the crack in the couch, or a black sock is crumpled on the floor. He gets very low to the ground, hisses, tries to attack the object and runs away if you try to pick it up and show him its okay. His fear of the dark is odd as well - he actually seems okay when all of the lights are out at bedtime, but when the lights are on and its dark outside I suspect his fear has something to do with the reflections in the black looking windows. Why this may have happened? Like I mentioned, he was feral from birth to when he was rescued by the Boulder Humane Society at 4 months old so we don't know if he had some sort of traumatic experience before we adopted him. It's not an enormous problem for us since we are still in the process of gaining their trust (at least the cat has learned that he is safe in my arms, and will sometimes retreat into my lap instead of running away) and at 7 months old they still have an open mind, however like you said in your video we don't want him to live a fearful life. If you have any suggestions for how to desensitize him to black objects, and possibly also his fear of the dark we would appreciate it. Thanks for all that you do!

Our cat is a rescue who was abused and neglected. She is not scared of normal things like the vacuum or ceiling fan, but is scared of being picked up. We keep our voices soft and do not pick her up unless needed. But when we slowly go in to pet her (from the front so she can see), she will run away if she thinks she's being picked up. Our vet says her stress goes into her bladder and contributes to her UTI problem (we keep her litter extremely clean, give her good food, a cranberry supplement, etc.) We do our best to keep her environment as stress-free as possible, but she freaks out so much when picked up. She will cling to the carpet when we do have to pick her up, meow very loud, and then will cling to our arms. I swear, she has PTSD. When we do pick her up, we hold her securely and pet her, sing to her, talk softly so she knows our arms are a safe place. But she still is so stressed out. I don't know what to do to make her feel safer. We've spent thousands on vet bills to get her treatment since we adopted her last year (dental, UTI treatments, cardiologist, lab work, etc). We will never give up on her and accept her as the nervous nelly that she is, but for her sake and the sake of our bank account, it would be nice to get some help.

My cat sleeps in a separate room next to our bedroom. We taught her that she can only get food and attention when we wake up when our clock radio starts playing music. Everything went well and we were able to sleep without her meowing or waking us up. Until last Friday. It has started storming. We did the normal routine of hunt, catch, kill, eat, sleep but a while after we fed her and closed the door, she started meowing and scratching the door in a panic. Since this was the first time, we turned on the clock radio and went to have a look. She hadn't eaten all of her food and wanted attention. My husband then went to sleep with her on the sofa after she had scanned and looked at everything in the living room. She relaxed and fell asleep. The next day we did the usual routine, except for a few meows everything was ok. The next day there was another storm and she started meowing panicked again. We ignored her and didn't get any sleep but in the morning she was all stressed and wouldn't eat without us around. She also lost her brother a month ago in an car accident and he was her big support. She is 1.5 years old and she got over his death rather quick we think. She likes it quite and he was a bit to active for her. She blossomed after his death as he was always demanding all the attention. But outside she normally followed him but now she is affraid and doesn't leave our garden. Another storm is coming so we fear the same scenario again. We don't really know how to react or what to do. Can you give attetion to this subject in a new video? We really want our cat to be happy.

We got a stray cat 2,5 years ago and although we keep him indoors, he's still afraid of many things. Like the sound of a plastic bag, or the one from an air freshener, or the hair dryer (not the vacuum cleaner though!). He also afraids of sudden moves or sounds. We think it's probably the result from his previous life on the streets (he was already about 4 years old when we got him). He was never feral, he was more like bullied from other alpha male cats as we were told, so it was critical at that point to get him at a safe place. So, we try not to yell in the house or causing him more stress, but it's not always easy. ...And after watching your video, I realized that this was the wrong thing to do, because instead of minimizing his fears with a technic, we just go with his flow. So for once more, I wanna thank you for another helpful video and I'm gonna try help my beloved little guy, overcome his fears!
