My ideas on how to stop cats from getting on furniture and scratching a leather chair or sofa. These methods of teaching a cat how to not get on furniture really work.
Here's How I Stopped Destin From Scratching My Black Leather Chair:
1. At a young age I taught Destin what "NO" means.
2. When the furniture was delivered to the house, every time my cat would try to get on it I would sternly tell him NO!
3. At night I would place a large piece of tin foil on the black leather chair and below it. Additionally, I sprayed the foil with a mixture of rubbing alcohol, vinegar and water. The offensive odors helps keep cats off of furniture.
4. After about three days Destin continued to try and get on the chair in various ways. I eventually got out a spray bottle and filled it with water. When he would mess with the furniture I would spray the cat with water.
5. The above methods worked and my cat doesn't scratch or get on this piece of furniture anymore. It took him about a week to be trained.
6. It's vitally important that your cat have an area that is his. Destin has a cat tower that is covered with carpet. He loves to scratch on the carpet in various areas of the tower.
Keeping a cat off of furniture and from scratching furniture is going to require a significant investment of your time....You must teach your pet or else your couches or chairs are going to get scratched.

Going to use this on my new kitty. She's an adopted 3 year old and hopefully once I get her new cat tower set up she won't continue to scratch. I think I'll definitely use the aluminum foil and vinegar trick in the meantime. Thank you so much for the helpful tip!

Were you able to train the new kitty to stay off your furniture?

The foil idea is brilliant to see if their little paws left foot prints. Literally one of the few channels who used a squirt bottle. I tried only using positive reinforcement to my roommate’s cat and he still scratches the furniture every time I turn away even though he has a scratch posts which are not old.

The foil works well my kitten is 21/2 months and I'm training him to stay out from under my TV & electronics cabinet I sprayed the tops of my couch that he was running on Now it's time for the cat tree so he can learn that's his spot to chill and scratch 😀

My kitten is running around having great fun on top of the sofa seats!!! I am going to try this foil technique on the back of the sofa too. When you sprayed the tops of your couch, did that stop him?

I sure wish I had seen this before my cat creatively decorated my leather recliner! Still, I think it will help a lot because I'll try your method and make sure it's working BEFORE I do the expensive repairs. One other thing for your readers to be aware of: if your cat needs attention, as my very active Bengal always does, then even a "No!" is going to have the opposite of the desired effect. So I'll also try your water bottle idea. I really can't thank you enough!

cats do need to scratch so be sure to have a scratching post or the cardboard ones you can buy at Walmart. If you get the cardboard when it is shredded turn it to the other side. I didn't know that for a long time.

Spraying a cat only teaches it it can't scratch or jump on something when you're in the room once you leave the rules don't apply. Cats are v intelligent creatures.

I fully agree. They can destroy some delicate pieces while you are away.

You have to find a way to cover the piece of furniture and find creative things to put on top of the coverings or around the furniture to let them know it’s a bad idea to be on the furniture or to scratch it. Each cat responds differently too, so some things may work and others won’t. One thing that definitely usually works is covering up the furniture entirely and putting things on top of the coverings of the furniture that will scare them away when you aren’t around, the guy in the video used aluminum foil but there’s hundreds of different things that you can come up: plastic office rugs turned upside down (the ones with those prickly pegs), tape (though originally my cats got used to regular tape and loved chewing on it so I ended up buying duct tape and that was enough to get them not to get on the tv stand), clattering metal windchimes, toys with sensors that yell when movement provokes them, ect.. You have to come up with creative ideas and eventually it’ll work enough that the cats won’t mess with the furniture. Even after I’ve trained my cats not to touch or scratch something, I always still continue to cover the furniture when I go to bed or leave the house anyway just in case, it also helps to protect the fabric of the furniture anyway and is a good idea and good habit for people to do even if you don’t have animals.

The mixture you spayed on the foil, in what proportions were the liquids? Perhaps 1:1:1? Or something different. Thanks for a great video.

Great Video, however I did have the scratch tower for my cat,, unfortunately she somehow almost got knocked out when it toppled over on her,,, it really did a job on her, I had to remove it from my family room, she,,, since that episode happened became terrified of it. So, for me with my cat this theory is a no. Feel bad this happened to her,, and also feel bad for her one chair she scratches. Have a great day!

I'm searching for preventive measures for my GranKitty not to scratch my beautiful leather sofa or use my drapes as a climbing post while he's visiting for a week. Thx for the vid. I'll be trying everything mentioned in this vid.

My roommates hiss and yell at their cat, get bit and scatched. whenever i am up at computer on only one home she hoovers. First she would jump in a desk draw, she stopped after hearing no and being moved. It took me too hours last evening removing her off the desk. she started to run when door was opened.

So it at least took three days, and you used the word no without picking him up? They would be offended by the vinegar, but the waterbottle seems like a good plan.

Taking a kitten from its mother at 6 weeks is irresponsible, probably learnt nothing from its litter mates then, shouldn't leave until at least 12 weeks.

You did not solve the problem. Look at your carpet and see what you will find there. I have noticed that you don't have any other furniture other that your black chair. The rest of the apartment belong to the cat. Am I right? Is that to accommodate the cat? Was it destroyed by the cat? Just curios to know because I think you live with a cat and not the cat living with you.
