My mother told me that this happened back in her days. Young men would go apply for a factory job. The hiring person at the factory would call the high school and ask for the applicant's attendance records. The hiring person thought: "If he shows up for school, he'll show up for work." If he had good attendance, he got the job. That was it.
@politicalRockwell

My Dad said that this is how it was at the steel mill in his hometown. The recruiter for the steel mill knew everyone at the High School, and as long as you showed up for school, they would hire you once you graduated. My Dad told me that the majority of the guys he went to school with put no thought whatsoever into what they wanted to do for their careers, they just knew they would go work at the steel mill and make bank. It was hard work, but most of them were able to buy houses in their early twenties, start and sustain families, and have a few spoils like a Harley or a Trans-Am.

@ChrisBakerauthor
@ChrisBakerauthor Месяц назад
@@politicalRockwell There was also more promotion-from-within. Some of those guys might very well work their way up into something better. Lamar Muse, for example, didn't have a college diploma. Yet, he worked his way up in the airline industry. He was the first CEO of Southwest Airlines and is largely responsible for much of their success even long after he was out the door.
@ChrisBakerauthor
@ChrisBakerauthor Месяц назад
@@paraguaymike5159 In some cases, the jobs were replaced by automation. My grandfather worked for a great glass factory, and they still grew a lot of food at home. Others worked in the steel mills. Some worked in the coal mines--coal mines also require a lot less people now.
@RestlessBenjamin
@RestlessBenjamin Месяц назад
I'm part of that in between semi-generation between GenX and Millennial and I noticed this as an even deeper concept as a hiring manager. The people with good attendance in general were the only employees who would work out. They still might not due to other circumstances, but even the smart and "hard working" employees would eventually crash out if they were late or missing any work at all during the first few months. The ones who would show up to work regularly were also the type who would show up to their own lives and could be trusted and counted on.

@@nneisler It is not exactly feminism. It is a strange amalgam of socialist ideas and capitalist reality (and feminism is a result of that). Socialism wages war on families since family ties are stronger than political ties and socialism wants to remove this barrier to infiltrate every aspect of human life. Capitalism is agnostic to family, it just wants profit. And women and men alike competing against each other and chasing goods and status symbols instead of starting families is good for profit, at least in the short term (but we can fill the gaps with immigration). We have a socialist intellectual and cultural class that agitates against families and a capitalist entrepreneurial class that promotes individualism and consumerism. It is an unholy alliance, that is eroding our society since decades. And I say that as an atheist.

@TheHealthConscounist
@TheHealthConscounist Месяц назад
We've dehumanized ourselves to the point where life has become a cycle of repetitive tasks, done just to survive with the bare minimum. Living paycheck to paycheck has reduced life to mere survival. To cope, we turn to entertainment, but it no longer means connecting with others; it's mostly about using technology to escape reality. This will only lead to more problems-mental health issues, physical health problems like weight gain, and isolation. Add to that the lack of romantic relationships, and a society that often marginalizes certain groups, like straight white men, and you have a recipe for disaster. This frustration and resentment can quietly build up behind millions of screens, creating a toxic environment. The only thing keeping many people going are the addictive algorithms that numb them for a few hours until they have to face the world again the next day. Repeating this cycle for years is psychologically unsustainable for anyone, and it could lead to dangerous outcomes if we don't address it.
@monika9671
@monika9671 Месяц назад
@@TheHealthConscounist I think life can always be boiled down to a series of repetitive tasks, if you strip the nature of the tasks down far enough. But our repetitive tasks have been so far removed from seeing their direct role and result as something that is bettering lives of those we care about, that our brain doesn't feel motivated to do them. But yeah, our brains are not made to be happy in world of abundance of entertainment and deceitful lack of physical danger for most people. Tasks that were natural to us through vast majority of our evolutionary history, even if they were repetitive, physically taxxing and dangerous, our brain perceives as satisfying. That's why the most popular video games genre seem to be either war games or survival games. And noone really spends hundreds of hours in beurocracy simulator. But substituting enjoyment of living with real world with games and content, as you said, degrades real connections between people. There are rare exceptions, like how I met my husband through a video game, and that connection pushed the game itself to the side in our lives. But a lot of people aren't striving to make real connections while consuming entertainment, even given opportunities, since especially for younger audiences, but not just them, it's hard to humanize people while only seeing what they type on a screen. It's easy to treat other people using media as npc's.

It turned out to be the best decision of my life. I was able to move away from crazy Oregon to a small town in Kansas, make a family, buy a house and working off the crippling debt. The moral of my story is sometimes you gotta take the risk and get comfortable in being uncomfortable.

Thanks for sharing your story, I'm glad you found your way through. I had a similar story as a Zillennial. Decided to make a drastic change in 2017 and moved to China from NY. Ended up making a bunch of new 'diverse' friends in the truest sense amongst the locals and the expat community. I met, fell in love with, and married a wonderful woman, found my belief in God (though we certainly wrestle at times,) started a modest but virtuous career in public education, and became a father. Now living back in the USA, my worldview is miles away from where it used to be, as the majority of the mental health issues are replaced by the love of family, community, and God. My advice to younger men who identify with Tom is to find a radical way to change your life, one that requires extreme geographical relocation with no support structures or safety net. The forge will test you, and partially break you, but what comes out will be the strongest of steels.

We tell them just choose anything, car detailing, window washing, woodworking, pet sitting, just be your own boss so you aren't beholden to corrupt corporations where you have to pretend to be something you aren't. We drag them to all sorts of places, food fairs, festivals, concerts, skiing/snowboarding, hoping against all hope for them to meet other Zoomers and actually interact with other humans. They are nowhere to be found; they are all home living in the alternate reality of social media. In the rare case that a Zoomer is actually spotted in the wild their heads are buried in the phone. Do what you need to now to start, not in a week or year etc etc, start that plan in motion. If neither yours or your wife's job have a 401k or anything, you need to start IRA's and contribute as much as possible and it'll pay in decades (delayed gratification) The world is a different place than what many knew or told it was. Your job sounds like an area where you can easily start your own small business in comparison to others. Pool work is for those who can afford that luxury, step out on your own and use them.. Like the end of the video says in the end compassion towards others in society, wishing y'all the best, fortune and happiness.

I quit my job two weeks ago. I would frequently work 4-5 hours passed my scheduled time to leave often making me miss important stores and the bank throughout the majority of the day. They would often ask me to work extra while skipping my breaks. I asked if I could leave early for the post office cause they close at 5 and the day before I stayed 4 hours over. He replied “no” and that “we need you here” I said “we always care about your needs as an employee but you never care about your employees needs as an employer, I NEED to and will be leaving” he said “young male workers come and go” and that “he could always train someone else to do what I do” and “if you walk out that door your fired” I replied “employers come and go just as frequently for us as new employees come and go for you, I’ll make it easy for your ass I quit” walked out and never felt more free. I found a better paying job. We will see if it works out. But it felt good to fight for my independence and even win in my opinion. The terrible leadership of that place is known around town.

I was homeschooled, so skipped all the psychological torture of public school indoctrination. Due to Covid policies I left the west coast and fled to middle-America, where I found society is much healthier than the one I lived in. I was raised in the protestant church, but it modernized and drove me away to Eastern Orthodoxy. I am part of an Eastern Orthodox parish with about 30 friends, and 10 close male friends and three priests who have become not just spiritual fathers, but father-figures. I am at church 3-4 days a week and I feel more socially fulfilled today than I ever did. I am living month to month, but I am close with my room-mates and have a chance to pay off the debt accrued over the chaos of Covid. I am in an objectively worse place than my parents, but my life is very livable, and I have a circle around me that come to my aid when I needed it and vice-versa. "Who we are comparing ourselves to" I think the weird thing in American culture is that we all have to pretend that the opportunities and functional society that the boomers grew up in is still the present. If we could all just admit that America used to have opportunity but doesn't now it would be so much better than the pretending.
@coopclauson
@coopclauson Месяц назад
> all have to pretend that the opportunities and functional society that the boomers grew up in is still the present Just to elaborate further, think of boomers you know (possibly parents). If you were to present them with the fact that every generation in America after theirs has done poorly, they will almost always attribute it to their generation being inherently better and in fact making society so wonderful that younger generations have no problems at all, which ironically is causing problems due to purposelessness. This gets into the "end of history" idea, they think they're the last generation in history.

I suppose a guaranteed basic income will be established, so people in huge numbers don't riot and burn down their cities. I had enough proof when I started skipping school almost daily, and I dabbled with online education before it was cool (2008-2011 for high school and 2013-2019 for college). I skipped certain classes and eventually whole mornings or afternoons. I also had a hybrid education with some fully online classes. Despite my truancies and tardiness, I could pass classes just on essays, large projects, and tests alone. As for online schooling, I wouldn't do it full-time. It was overwhelming on the senses. A lot of screen time was hard on me when I did only online courses in college. I spent my free time reading, doing arts and crafts, exercising, gardening, and wasting away on Tumblr and Pinterest (my bad habit of the time). My parents should have forced me to socialize more though. I didn't join any clubs or sports. I hung out at the school library or the public library. I didn't even have to have a part-time job which would have helped me open up. A school day shouldn't be longer than 4-6 hours of lectures, reading, and school projects - less hours if taking only online classes. The other hours are best spread between exercise, creative pursuits, learning practical skills (home ec, home improvement, hunting, self-defense, etc), and socializing in a club or sport. I screwed myself over in not being more active, but I don't regret how much school I missed in person. I still graduated high school with just enough credits. I'm not ambitious, but I don't have to be (kept woman). Someone who is ambitious would enjoy less lecturing and more time working in a business idea. I have lived a "soft girl" life by choice, but others could pick up a variety of intense hobbies and skills, staying busy and as high-strung as they want without being herded around and corralled all day. Our peak youth doesn't last forever, and it sucks to waste time sitting around being fed nonsense or just nothing at all.

Man I went through three years college about to become a Paramedic. Pay is $18/hr and the cheapest apartments not absolutely dilapidated is $1,100 a month. I could move to city, and make $22.5/hr, and rent cheapest $1,800 in a ghetto or $2,800 for a moderately safe apartment. I went through partner infidelity, had my son taken (wasn't blood, apparently), and kicked out of my house. At the same time my boss berated me for late paperwork, asking why and I told him "Well you're a first responder, you're gonna have to figure that out yourself, not at work. Can you also go from 72 hours a week to 96?". I have no debt, last five years I spent 2 homeless, even working 90+ hour weeks paying for school certs and groceries. 18:37 this is a huge problem that isn’t talked about and it’s getting worse. I’m a bit older than this person created here, I was born in 1983 and I started going to talk therapy in college, around 2002. I went on and off since then and I’ve noticed therapists are so ideologically captured that they really struggle to connect with young men’s problems. It doesn’t help that a lot of therapists are liberal women who undoubtedly view men as privileged. How do you think they’re going to react to a man’s suffering? I’ve had two therapists respond to me talking about the physical abuse I endured with my mom by saying, “well your mom grew up in a time where she was discriminated against and held back so I’m not surprised she had anger in her.” Completely inappropriate and insane. You can just tell some of these therapists really want someone other than a straight white male in their office because they don’t see our problems as legitimate. On top of that the APA has pathologized masculinity so now it’s in the books.

But you just need to get a job like me to fix your problems), and we have everything going for us and have to solve it by ourselves alone, and isolated from everyone, and nobody wants to talk to a person who's posting dark negative things about their lives. No matter how true they are or how much we really are at the edge of what our psyche can take, we just need to hustle harder and lie to ourselves and post fun exciting pictures about how great our lies for a life is like them, that's what fixes societal collapse. And the dissolution of the family structure that's kept humans alive for how long? My gawd. Sorry coreycabral6061 I didn't mean to hijack the comments on your comment. I didn't even introduce myself. 27 years old, moved back in with Dad during covid, work a mediocre job, drive an old truck that brakes down a lot. I'm honestly happy, no cope. I've spent a lot of time thinking over my situation, comparing it to my peers, dwelling on shit. At the end of the day I have it better than 99.9% of humans have had it throughout history. Its all about perspective, and how knowledge and discipline can bring liberation from the trap of the modern world. I started gardening, raising chickens, eating better, exercising, learned to shoot, learned to live off the land, found God and came to terms with myself. It took a few years, and there's definitely times I stumble, but I feel like the skills and knowledge I've gained along the way will someday bring me a physical freedom from modernity to compliment the mental freedom I've gained. End goal is an off grid cabin, maybe a wife and kids if that's what God wills. Its so easy to get down in doomerism and become cynical, but the truth is everything you see out in front of you is a reflection of whats inside your own head. Redpill/blackpill are necessary swamps to drudge through before gaining this "enlightenment". You're not suppose to dwell in the swamps for too long. Realize the world is a crazy and shitty place, then take that realization and use it to your advantage. Become the master of your own world, an unmoved and ungovernable pillar.

I'm disabled as well, severe social issues related to autism (on the face of it it's fine, at first at least) as well as general physical health issues that make normal exercise difficult, was diagnosed at 16, normally the government takes alot longer to diagnose but they knew immediately with me that it was incurable, which was strange as i'm 40 now, which should give you a idea how long i've been like this. As a old timer, let me give some advice, i went through the steps, suicidal thoughts, extreme depression, self destructive actions, what all of this eventually taught me is that life sucks for us all right now, my lot in life was a bad one, there's no getting around it, but it also allowed me to see a different perspective on things, it taught me that in the long run, i needed something to believe in and fight for, for me that was my faith in god and my own sense of morality, for others it might be something else, but overall the one thing to remember is that as long as your alive you can find something that only you can do, it might be something small, but it's still something that will have massive ramifications down the centuries, heck op, your quote her might cause someone to think differently and a few years down the life change someone's life, the importance of every action we take can ripple throughout history in ways we'll never know. I'm reminded of the question alot of religious people seem to ask, what is the meaning of life? To me, the answer is simple, to live, to experience, to see, and to influence. All people are important, no matter how small they may seem, every action has a effect and a simple word of advice you might give someone could have ramifications a century from now no one would ever remember you for, but it would still be there. So the meaning of life is, to learn and to live to me, as such even with the hand i was given, i no longer have those dark thoughts, the self loathing, because in the long run, even if it's minor, something i have done, will have a effect on someone and my goal now is to try to make it a good one.

This seems impossible and strange to me. Listening to this brought back memories of my childhood and youth in a small town in Central Europe, where everything around me seemed to be dying. Unemployment reached 25%. Inflation was in the triple digits. Over 30 years later, my mother still cries when she remembers how they had to pay off a 30-year mortgage in just a few months. People accepted any working conditions. It was incredibly difficult for young people to find any job. The infrastructure was falling apart. Everyone would say that things used to be better. Alcoholism and social apathy were widespread. My university professor would often declare loudly that he had no idea where we would find work. The search for opportunities to emigrate was common, and there was a running joke that the last person to leave should turn off the lights. Those were cruel times, and many people took their own lives.

That you can say "scared of what they said was true" shows humility and self-awareness which, at least from my perspective, is in short supply these days. Ask God for the strength to persevere. I'm what they call an elder millennial. I constantly lived my life on the tail end of the culture shift. I literally got a front row seat and watched the West go backwards. Look, I'm going to drop a truth on you that not many are going to want to accept, but I think we are genuinely a minority. When compared to the rest of the world, we've lost the majority of our power and say. We're not strong enough to retake everything and make it work for us. Our best hope is coming together, cutting out our own slice, and starting a-new.

@@AngryNegativeHistoryProject we're not going to have a choice and it's far easier than trying to retake what was lost. If we try to do that and fail, we will be in a much worse position than when we started. Forced to conform or flee with nowhere to really call home.

I agree with you and have been saying this since the great scam of 2020. I tell people "I am a kickback and watch the world burn kinda guy.", because I can not see a way to recover the minds of the lost at this point. It is better to let this fire burn to the ground and rebuild a new, than to try to rehab a nearly totally deteriorated society.

I'm 5 years before the millennial cut-off but I feel more like a zoomer than any of my millennial counterparts. I've always hung around with kids 2-3 grades below me and my best friends are younger than me. I'm over 30 and yet everything other than finances that he mentioned in the video applies to me.
