One of the biggest mistakes I see anglers make is by fishing the ned rig the same way every time they go out fishing. Sure you can probably catch fish doing this but a ned rig is actually more versatile then you think.
Another ned rig mistake I see, is people using too heavy of a ned rig head. These lures were intended to be fished on extremely light heads and it seems that the lighter your head, the more bites you will get.
Another ned rig mistake I see is more of a modification. If you use the modification I show you, it will help you to not have a twisting issue with the ned rig.
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

Swimming a ned with a yo-yo retrieve and treating it like a vertical jig is great for suspended/schooled fish. 110% agree with you on lightweight and the snapping method. For rivers with current... Take a weight where its JUST enough to keep bottom contact and let the current scoot it down stream! My favorite little trick I saw on YT several years back... Add some maribou to the end of a ned rig!

The trick is, as you said, light weight. 1/16th or less. But, equally importantly, it needs to fall on slack line. Give it extra line on the water so it falls with no tension. This lets it wiggle waggle on it’s way down. If you have tension it will mostly just glide down which is bad. Too much weight makes it just glide down with no wiggle waggle too. I like to fish it in 10-15’ of water and hop it off the bottom 4-5’ and let it wiggle waggle back down. Don’t like to jerk it off the bottom though. Real down to the water and smoothly lift the rod tip up about 5’ and the. Give it slack and call to the bottom. I never found it to be a drag bait. It’s a free fall bait.
@eric34399
@eric34399 Год назад
I’m a northern guy so not sure about other places but I throw a ned religiously on a 1/4 because the bait is meant to be on the bottom. If I’m trying to catch them on the fall I’ll throw a light hair jig or something similar.

My pap makes his own ned head jigs and they never fail me. Everytime I go out I'll get bit right away! My favorite color ned rig color is chartreuse and black great mix and if the rivers muddy it stands out great! Usually I stick to 1/10-1/16 my personal preference. But if it drops slow ill change it to a heavier ned head jig. Hope I can sell some in the future with my pap there top notch!

Old school, curly tailed jig anglers might remember cutting the tails of your jigs and downsizing the jig head during a tough bite. Some used to paint over the eyes, some would try to bend the eye out. Ned rigs are a very cool modern take on some old school finesse jigging with curly tails. FN love it!

I’ll add one more technique. Use the lightest head as possible (1/64th if possible) medium lite rod with 20lb or less braid to 4 or 6lb floro. Cast it out let it fall on semi slack line, watching your line as it falls , begin reeling and raise your rod to about 2 o clock, stop reeling and leave your rod in place . This will make the bait rise off the bottom begin swimming towards you, than as the reeling stops the bait will pendulum back towards you and fall to the bottom. Rinse and repeat . It’s a swimming and drop technique. Very similar to what u had mentioned but slightly different. I got this off john crews on bass u .

Good video. Thanks. 2 questions. 1, can you put the plastic worm on a ned rig and make it weedless, like tucking the hook just inside the plastic? Would it still be effective as long as you keep it straight? 2, What weight would you suggest for fishing moving water, like streams and rivers?

I'm evaluating which Ned rig spinning rod attributes I should be weighing most in my analysis in buying a dedicated rod (for it primarily, but sure will cover other finesse applications to some extent). Saw some videos where they were playing up the importance of a parabolic action in the rod, usually they were using a Med. power with a mod-fast or even a moderate action. I think most guys go with a fast or even extra fast action, but seek out a tip on it which isn't overly stiff. It's a little tough assessing that sight unseen. But I couldn't understand their pick of medium power rods where the low end weight rating/suggestion was starting at like 1/4, but many anglers throwing Neds stay light maybe 1/16 and up from there, and fish the .2's and 1/4 oz. weights more as the exception than the rule. What is the strength of the argument for shorter rods for ned technique (like 6'8, 6'10 and 7'0) vs. a 7'5 or a 7'6, which always has better hook sets at the end of long casts and fights a fish better than with a short rod? Can you share some of your educated opinions on these questions?
@kevinlynch6799
@kevinlynch6799 Год назад
Didn’t see a response so I throw one to ya: I have caught a couple 1,000 smallmouth bass and hundreds of largemouth bass on the Ned Rig. Usual Ned Head weight is 1/15 oz. and 1/10 oz. I suggest a 7’ medium light, fast tip rod for distance casting (boat or shore). Kinda assuming you are 5’’5” to 6’ 10’ tall. Go to say a 6’6” rod if shorter or you are only focused on short, highly accurate casts such as boat docks or low laying branches. One rod suggestion: St Croix Premier PS70MLF2SG: 7’, Medium Light, Fast Action, Two-Piece, Split Grip, rated 4-10 lb. Line, 1/8 oz.- 1/2 oz., $160 at Bass Pro as of 6/2/2023. Excellent warrantee if you break the rod. Two piece so you can always have it rigged and “broken down”. Use a couple of girls rubber band like Hair Ties to keep the two rod sections together when traveling. Mark the rod every two inches and you can simply measure a fish by holding it up against your rod. On streams I use a Z-Man Finesse Bullethead Weedless Jig in 1/10 oz. and 1/15 oz. with a Z-Man TRD CrawZ (green pumpkin). Best day on a stream so far is 166 smallmouth bass. But, I used a BFS Setup (Shimano Metanium BFS bait casting reel but now Shimano makes a sweet Curado BFS bait casting reel for close to $200 less) with a Medium action Shimano rod so I could cast, hook, reel and then swing the bass to my hip where it could be quickly be released. Hope this info helps someone. Life is Good.

@muskietime
@muskietime Месяц назад
@@M_O_N_T_A_N_A_Husker Thanks for asking: I used 12lb. White Berkley Nono-fil braid with a 6’ to 12’ leader of 8 lb. test (usually fluorocarbon but mono is fine too). I tie the FG knot with 30 loops to connect the braid to leader as the Nano-fil is soooo slick you need extra loops. Test the knot before sing as more than once I tied the perfect knot only to test and find the knot slipped! 12’ leader allows me to cut off and retie quickly if my line gets nicked or I change lures. White Nano-fil as I catch over 30% of my bass seeing the white braid move before my rod “telegraphs” the pickup. 8lb. leader line is strong enough to “swing” the bass out of the water to my left hip where I hold the bass as I pop the lure out by hand or long narrow pliers on a retractable leash. Fish drops right back in the water quickly.
