STOP Leash Reactivity (Barking & Lunging) Quickly. Everything to know in one session. 

A challenge I have is when I have to walk my dog past another dog, the other dog is flipping out, barking lunging and usually on a too long leash. Obviously the owner of other dog has little control while I am trying to employ your methods. I do use a gentle leader. Your methods have completely changed the game for me and my dog. After watching a lot of your leash related videos (and others), this one actually made everything click for me, I have watched literally hundreds of hours of training videos, and I feel your methods make the most sense to me. I have only done one session with my highly reactive GSD (11months old) and it was the most game changing walk I have ever had with him, hes a different dog!! Thank you so much for sharing your training....absolute gold!! I can't wait to go on the walk tomorrow morning, and that is something I would never have said a few days ago!!

Building obligation is huge in recovery for a dog with these behaviors - Insist vs Resist, as long as his safety and survival is built with trust by the handler that you can handle the environment, the dog can then trust and begins the process to having them become neutral to the emotional response of seeing the stimulus. I always tell my clients: Thoughts without emotion, have no impact, while Emotions without thought, have no direction. Well done, Joel 👏

I've got a reeeeally stubborn but halfway really obedient people pleaser of a white shep puppy. 6 months old. Absolutely fearless and chill but a bit prone to going crazy annoyed puppy mode. I'm SO happy i found this channel, these tips are so valuable they're just priceless ❤

These methods work very well with a handler that elicits a dogs trust and respect. Calm confident energy, consistent clarity of communication. My dominant LGD has thousands of years of genetics telling him to go submit every predator size canine we pass but he is able to control himself because I insist that he must.

Im thinking to go back to the gentle leader for a while just to fine tune my dogs occasional just wandering closer to other dogs to smell and overall over interest. Its been such a hard road getting her extreme reactivity under control but I just refused to give up on her and always tried new tactics. Theres been a huge improvement lately. Just subscribed. It’s just great to see an alpha trainer deal with alpha/reactive dogs. My dog is my best friend and I adore him but there is no way he will dominate me or choose his own path. Hi Joel, I am so impressed how fast you managed to get Griffin to stop the freak-out and make him sit ( 09:54 ). Besides the Halti/head collar the most important tool for me is a simple KNOT IN THE LEASH. It gives me something to hold on to and it marks where I need to hold it for a consistent heel. I (f, 160lbs) rehearsed a lot with my 90 lbs rescue dog (as advised in a previous video) and I am so thankful for your guidance! Today he ignored his first dog! ... and then freaked out about 3 others ... More content about leash reactivity would be great, especially about the aspect of redirecting. Standing still causes my dog to build and increase the intensity of the freak-out. Some content concerning encounters with uncontrolled off leash dogs would be great too!

I detect that the dog has a limp, possibly a cut pad. The leash instruction training by Beckman is great and is reinforcing my leash work that I learned from watching Beckman that has given me the technique to train my new dog and improve my old dog. Thank you

I love Beckmans methods and my wife and I try to employ them to the letter. My only complaint is...I have not yet seen Joel with a truly "leash reactive" dog that even comes close to our 6 month old European Dobermans behavior. Euro Dobbies tend to be "out front" healers and ours is no exception. He slack leash heels like a champ, and sits at every curb/intersection perfectly. BUT...starting around 5 months, he began lunging and barking at any dog we pass, and he gets in a 'zone' where we don't exist, and he's even lashed out at us, and has bitten us out of desperation. We can now only walk him when the coast is clear, which has minimized our opportunities to long walk, which probably adds to his frustration. What a dilema😭

My Dobie is an "Out front" walker. I actually prefer it that way so I can see him reacting and be ready in time, as opposed to having him by my side and he sees something that I don't, and takes off and tries to yank my arm out of the socket.

Another terrific video. You're a great trainer. For 16 years I've been using my Border Collies X Kelpies in the same way you use Prince. Jed, my 1st, taught me so so much and is the reason I do what I do. Recently had the pleasure of getting to know my 1st Doberman. And wow if he is typical then they are super impressive. Brave, measured, curious and confident come to mind. Dangerous in the wrong hands. The pooch in this video appears a little limpy, probably nothing but thought I'd mention it. Peace.

Man I can’t tell you how many of your videos like this I’ve watched and this describes my dog to a tee. Have a prong collar and he started reacting to the corrections with it when locked on to other dogs and I believe it’s made him worse. Got a gentle leader and going to try this. He does great with the stop method but I he is an “in front” walker too

I wish I saw that video when I had my leash reactive Doberman I spent a lot on a trainer but she did a great job. I could have done part of it myself though.

At the 10:20 mark you mentioned don't grab your dog by the muzzle but use the leash. If you're not using a gentle leader would this be the same approach? I have seen and won't lie have also grabbed my dogs muzzle to get their attention and say 'eyes' in order for them to look at me before.

Beckman, I'd love your input on being on the receiving end of off leash dogs in a strange situation like riding horses and another person's dog comes up to you. I saw a video of my worst nightmare, an incompetent owner not grabbing their dog while someone was riding her horse. People can get killed or seriously injured.

With my upfront rottie it is very difficult to get him behind me or even on my side. He is also redirecting at me for corrections. No one tells folks how to handle dogs like him because they cant handle themselves. So they show just "easy" dogs. So thanks a lot for that video. Told me that i do some things right but have to work on the other hand. But it could be a way for my dog and me. Rotties do react well to discipline but not very well to corrections. Your method could be the way between i searched for.

100% about treats. It drives me crazy when I see someone use treats as a way of redirecting their dog away from my dog - all that is doing is rewarding the dog for the bad behaviour. The treat should only be used when the dog does something positive, as a reward, not as a redirection or distraction

Love your way of training, not being stubborn and only using the technique that worked before, but trying out different ways. I often hear 2nd or 3rd time owners say: "oh, I had a dog before, I know what I am doing" while the current dog is completely leading them by the nose. Each dog reacts and answers to methods differently, you gotta start at 0 with every dog, not thinking of taking "shortcuts" ^^`

This video by Joel is a great video on reactivity, in terms of demonstration, methods and tools used, and explanations. Also, Tom Davis describes "contact heal" and "contact targeting" for a reactive dog, yet also mentions that at some point it becomes a currency battle. (See video titled: "this forces all dogs to be reactive and fearful" between the 1:45 and 3:00 minute time mark ...the video was put out 5 months ago as of today which is 7-27-24).

I was dog walking a Papillon for a client that had leash reactivity and was able to eliminate that behavior within a couple weeks. I wasn’t brought in to train him however I wasn’t going to walk a dog with leash reactivity every time either.

my dog freaks out when she sees other big dogs but it seems more fear based (was attacked by an off leash big dog in the past). I'm not sure what else to do other than treats

So, I am fostering a dog who is not treated motivated. I am working on several of the items you talk about which I am loving your methods. What do you recommend for dogs who are not food motivated. I have been using affection, yet I am finding this gets her excited, and I want to be focusing on creating a calm dog. Thank you in advance, and continue to do the amazing work you do!

A couple of questions if thats ok? Do you ever use prong collars or e-collars? Are you using a gentle leader here? It’s hard to see it. Is it not true , because another trainer said that pulling or correcting your dog with a gentle leader can hurt their neck , back, etc… also what if you have 2 dogs/ is it important they are consistent with the sides each time/ one always on left and the other always on the right ? Thank you

To echo what someone else has said here, this dog is slightly limping on one of his front legs. You can see it by his head nodding as he walks. Something to look at if it keeps happening. Other than that, a really helpful video.

Something wrong with the dog, struggle walking normally (limping or something). I was waiting the whole video hoping for a word or two to explain, but nothing, just harsh corrections on a dog struggling already. And what if the aggression was related to pain? With no explanation, can only speculate and wondering what is going on here.

Looks like he had a hip problem as far as the limping.

This is not a terribly leash reactive dog in my opinion. He looks to already be far along with training. Would love to see a video with highly reactive and out of control dog. One with bad walking habits as well, which is common in reactive dogs.

What about when your trying to train a 17 week old puppy for leash reacting but she won’t always look at me and pay attention. Following your puppy video methods from 3 yrs ago…

I like the general leader, but I can't keep my dog from staring at another dog with it. I had to go back to a pinch collar to even have a chance to get his (partial) attention.

So my dog somehow figured out that she can be more aggressive when the gentle leader is off, but as soon as she sees it becomes the most behaved girl in the world. All bad behaviors go away, with gentle leader on. Bad behaviors come back, with gentle leader off. Since she hates the gentle leader because she knows she's no longer in control, I've been using the act of putting it on as a correction method. Put it on for a little bit, she calms down, and I take it off. Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of leash? Will this work on a toy poodle that barks/ reactive towards humans and dogs
