Joel, 8 months ago I was completely lost with my dog. I considered giving him back, because I was so out of my element. Your videos and inspiration on consistency in training absolutely saved our relationship. My dog is now a joy for others to be around, he listens when I give him instruction, and his recall is close to 100.0%. Thank you a million, Joel.
@@professorm3136 i got him when he was just over a year old, and he will be two in March. high energy hunting/working breed, catahoula leopard. with other dogs around / playing, I may have to call two or more times to get his attention (after three calls, I am on top of him and pulling his butt to where I said he needs to be). but once he knows I've asked him to do something he realizes it simply isn't worth it to resist. Joel calls it learned helplessness, and it absolutely works.

I'm impressed with your tenacity and desire to seek out the help and not just give up on another, like so many others do.. I am at that point now. He does so well until another dog is coming by. And the walks are terrible. He does well for a while then he jerks and dashes to a mailbox to smell and pee. I am besides myself with him.
This guy is so far ahead of all the other "ideas" about dog training. Results. Control. Repeatable techniques. Super impressive. I learn something every time I watch.
This 15 minute video has done more for me than a $1400 training program. We flunked out of sit means sit. Do not recommend for small dogs, or at least sensitive little demons like mine. I could write a mini thesis on all the reasons that was the wrong program for us and how ripped off I feel...but....3 twenty minute sessions of practicing this and I have a pug who comes when she's called. We will continue to work on this a ton, because out of ALL the things I want my dog to mind me on, this is the #1 most important. THANK YOU.

Cane corsos are NO JOKE when it comes to training, so whatever you decide, I hope your son follows through diligently. Only 7 lbs? Is it a newborn? lol That said, that program was not the right fit for us by any means. I don't need to have my pug face me on a platform, walk on different surfaces, or have her head hang down and tail uncurl whenever I put that damned collar on (the trainer told me a 6 mo old puppy was "manipulating" me by getting scared and unhappy over an e-collar that scared her). I just need her to come when she's called and poop outside (and we handled that part already). Worked great for my son's lab, was like flushing money down the toilet for me. Literally just called her from downstairs, across the house, and she came running at top speed.
I think you're doing something here that some people may not notice. You're giving Cooper a release. You're telling him when it's ok to go do his own thing. So it's much more clear to him when you need him back because it's so different than when you turn him loose to play. It's very cool. You're so clear on "hey I need you to come", then "hey, we're done, you can go play with your buddy." I LOVE THIS!
Except when you’re in “Training mode”, if you want the dog to Learn, you need to have him “ FOCUSED, And NOT distracted, …. especialy for the first several Sessions! You can start to introduce this, “with” distractions “after” he’s learned the command… ! If not you’re just gonna overwhel the dog! Also, this is an older dog too, so that is why he’s able to get it a bit faster than say, a smaller puppy …. you shouldn’t wait until a dog is that old to teach recall though … !
Yep! You don’t want a dog vaguely wondering when he or she is allowed to resume other activities, and definitely don’t want to set a pattern where they just have to decide for themselves. That key about making sure to grab the harness so they don’t just dine and dash plays into that nicely, lol. And I noticed that Cooper also seemed to respond more quickly to the release signal as the video progressed, like he was gaining a stronger understanding of what the cue meant. 😃👌
I'm of the opinion that the "stay" command does more harm than good. Every command should have an unspoken "stay" attached to it. The dog should maintain their command until given the "break" command. Our break command is "free" but it's the same thing. With that said, we did use "stay" when the puppy was very young, but phased it out as soon as he understood what was expected.
What I really like about this video is that it shows real-world situations not just a perfectly trained dog who has already has mastered the command. I have a 6-yr-old rescue, who is very good natured, gregarious, and very high-energy. He has had some very good professional training, but "Come" is not something that he knows or simply chooses to ignore. I have already started him today, incorporating what is shown here. He is highly food-motivated and bright, so hopefully he will grasp the concept quickly.
@@ricky7892 I also haven't tried combining treats with the correction, which is my fault. I need to do that. But he is a former stray, a rescue, and very independently minded.
Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games ru-vid.comUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!
You are a legend boss! 😁 I tried this on my 2 year old dog, who I had given up on come recall. She kept running away from me the moment I tried grabbing her collar. But I made sure I chased her down and brought her back to the same place. Three times and the fourth time she let me grab her collar without any issues. And she walked down two floors when I said come. Super win! Just in 15 minutes. I need to do this everyday. Thanks a ton!!!
Great - key is consistency to ALWAYS following up ! NEVER give a command or ask something that you won’t follow up on if it’s ignored - wilfully, for fun or b/c of distraction . When training, I keep a 6 ft. leash on, even in the house so I can easily get & retrieve. Any training like stay/sit/down etc .. NEEDS to be followed up on after the FIRST command/ask .. don’t repeat command .. dog becomes lazy b/c there’s no immediate follow up. Always follow through - that is the borders//boundaries. Allowing them to KNOW what you expect from them.. where they fit in the pack - happy dog ❣️

Joel, I’m a first time dog owner @ 63. I have a 8 month old Aussiedoodle… That does not step off of my curb , when I point my finger to the ground next to me “ cue “ He comes and sits right next to me . he 99.9% of the time comes to me when I call him. Joel is in my head all the time "are ya with me?" "I'm over this" "this is my house" I did the loose leash method with two dogs at once starting at the door. They are friggin blowing my mind. I like to go off leash, but the empowerment you feel with over 200lbs of dog walking next to you on the loose leash rocks

He's very talktative in the book about his dog training experiences with several different breeds over the years. When he does get to the training chapters, you need to read more slowly, take mental or written notes and try to apply his advice to your pet. That's where i'm at now. Another review is in order aftet i've trained my blue mountain shepherd with brandon mcmillan's method.
My 2 year old beagle mix is highly intelligent but has NEVER come to us when called. This method literally worked in 2 minutes. Just the “pop” in come made all the difference and stopped him dead in his tracks and he came straight to me. I did it a few more times with treats to reinforce him positively and he is transformed. I have trained recall with dogs that I only have 1hr with daily, the fact that they understand the pitch and the comprehension shows that these methods truly work - Many times people at the dog park think they are my dogs when in fact I only give them leadership, which is all they need to have consistent recall - Well done, Joel.
I was watching the beginning of the video and laughed when coup didn’t come because it reminded me of trying to get my golden to listen and he jus won’t, then towards the end I was really impressed how coup ignored prince and came right to you.
#Moreglob - I’m at the same 80% with my dog. He knows it’s good when he comes, there’s only positive results. But at times he’s just too distracted, and sometimes just even willfully ignoring the command! Redoubling my efforts with the grab and treat will be a big help, I think.
I have a 10 y/o Lab mix I got when I was 13 and I made soo many mistakes with that poor bastard, because patience was never my strong trait. But I was willing to learn and learn I did. Anyways, his recall has been at 95 - 99% for the longest time and when people asked me how I did it I honestly couldn’t tell them. After watching a good amount of Joels videos I realized that in my impatience I just never let him blow me off and I did everything right, unknowingly. I was so lucky with that dog in so many aspects. Still, poor thing for having to be the first dog of an impatient 13 y/o, but he laid such important groundwork for every dog to come.
Thank you. It is crucial Critical that they learn to come so you can save them from danger at any time. It is paramount that they learn to come immediately. COME Command is the most important lesson they will learn if you LOVE them and I know most of you do because you take care of them.
Some background, I spent 15 years working with animals at a shelter and was injured on the job when a dog swept my legs out from under me and I ruptured a disk in my back. I adopted a dog to train as a service dog and had a facility that we went to weekly for training. I could never get the recall to stick with the methods they were using. I pretty much gave up on training her because of this. Your methods have given me confidence that she will come back to me. She is the fasted dog I have ever seen, it literally blew my mind the first time I saw her running in a large yard at the training facility. Thank you for this advice, I really appreciate it.
Thank you for your explanation on why my dog won't come all the day when I call her to come. It totally makes sense. I just started showing my hand to her, and she comes correctly to me 100% of the time inside the house. It makes a HUGE difference. Today is day one. I'm looking forward to more practice with her. i have teared up over HOW GOOD MY BOXER IS AFTER THIS VIDEO. she used to run all over the yard and bark and lunge for quite literally hours if I asked her to come inside.
Cooper is such a sweetie, I love how Joel keeps letting him go off and play and he just prefers to be around him anyway. I can imagine that can make it kinda difficult to train some behaviors, though.
I know that's right, lol. We have 5 dogs, all but one are rescues. One is a bit of a struggle, but he's just 10 months. Our newest rescue, another husky, acts a lot like Cooper. He tries to stay as close to me as possible. He's about 12 months. In order to train recall I actually have to have one of the other dogs out to distract him. So by the time he's feeling secure enough to leave my side he should be well trained on recall. People have told us for 20 years that huskies are impossible to train, but that's not really true. It just takes a tiny bit more patience.
Recall is much easier to train if you use a 20-20ft long line in order to kind of reel them in if they ignore you, give treat, praise then rinse and repeat. Don't do overly long training sessions, the dog will get bored and less cooperative. That's how we did in when training our Rotts in Scheutzhund, we also did more than on type of training exercise in one hour sessions a couple of times a day. Patience, treats and repetition will get the job done. Have fun..
Love this. It's one of the first things I started teaching my 6 month old rescue from day 1. Saved our butts at the dog park the other day when someone showed up with 2 aggressive GSD. The GSD went after a pitty, my boy was headed for the mess, I called him and instead of getting in the middle of the fight he charged for my legs and sat on my feet. Made it easier to leash and leave without incident.

Never trained with treats ..my dog works for her food. She only eats when the family gets done. If I do give her a treat on occasion. She won't eat it until I set down. She knows her place and her job. Good video
My dog didn't 'joyfully" recall for years (terrier surrounded by squirrels and rabiits), until I started pointing to the ground in front of me. Eventually, no sound...just name and point (for my dog anyway). It works.
I presumed that my dog already knew that she should come. I never considered that she blurred the come command. i was wondering why she was being distant. It is now apparent that it is my fault. Thanks for a Real correction method.

I never knew that holding my dogs harness when calling her was having a positive impact on her re-call. The more you know. Your videos are so helpful, and I love how you say things how they are. You don’t sugar coat or over exaggerating. I’m gonna recommend you to my friends or people I know who is getting a dog.
My recall for my dobbies when they used to chase rabbits in the desert was , I whistled to get their attention, then do a hand signal over the top of my head like "round up" and meet me here and they came to a left side heel. I never used treats in the day just praise and a long 20' leash. They listened probably because I had the dogs since puppyhood. I learned from books in the 80s. ✌️😊 Edit. I like learning new things so this looks great also. ✌️

Have a 15 month lab , recalled perfectly until my grandkids decided to train one day started a bad habit, just as he was getting back to me, would decide to circle instead of coming to me. I’m learning I don’t let anyone work my dog that want do things the right way.
I do practice your technical commands, hand motions and positive reinforcements. It takes quite a few takes but OMG it’s amazing. My dog thrives on the command, he loves the connection we have. Our outing are so much fun in fact Sam, on Q gets his leash and prances all the way to the park and back. Oh the joy! Thank you so much!
We're inside the house and I did this with my boy in the other room. He came right away. Then I shut the door and called..he opened the door and came to me. I'm starting now to hold his collar and treat him thanks for the good tips. Will need to try this outside with the distractions.
I just tried the recall with my dog (she found me and jumped on my bike and came home with me) I took her outside with the neighborhood street dogs running around, she totally got it! We practiced 3 times in the house and then went for a walk and she was playing with 4 dogs. I called her and she came running! Oh it was so awesome!!! Thank you so much for this video! Such a blessing. We will practice everyday in every environment we are in. As she comes with us everywhere we go
This is such useful information, thank you! My boy is very unreliable off lead but I have naturally been using the "pop" on the "come", the hand gesture with treats and the "go get" to change that, even though I wasn't at the puppy classes with him. This demonstration just helps me tie everything together very nicely. He is a 6yr Beagle that i inherited from my sister when she moved. I have subbed!
The dog figured out the game and just started following him. Very very smart dog. Also, I taught my pit to sit, shake and lie down. She always came when I called because she absolutely loved me. But when I asked her to sit, she would sit, stick out the paw for a shake, lie down and sit again. LOL Just in case I needed any of those we'll just get them out the way.
I appreciate that it gets recognized with the go get method that it’s not all about treats and that your energy matters to show the dog you were not just giving them an option, but a command. I have many close friends and family that refuse to be stern in anyway with their dogs so the dogs end up not understanding the consequences of having to do the task whether they want to or not. Also that he showcased very well that it’s done without by over correcting or being angry.

All of my dogs that I have been personally responsible for have been working dogs, specifically guide dogs. My first guide 23 years ago was a pint-size black Lab. I was a noive handler and disappointed that I got a Lab because I'd been told by others that "Labs are dumb". I wanted a GSD. Long story short, little Filly was anything but dumb. I called her my pocket rocket. She was a lot of dog for me then, given my lack of experience and skills, yet she always did her best for me. I'll always have a soft spot for Labs and someday, I'm gonna have another one... or two or three. But yes repetition and consistency are keys to success in relationship building and dog training. A wise trainer once told me: "You get from the dog what you put out. If you want a better dog, then learn to be a better human. Or rehome that dog."
Just wanted to say Thanks a lot. I rescued my daughters pit bull because her idiot first boyfriend gave her one for Christmas. She has never had a dog before, luckily the asshole is gone but I couldn’t allow a dog to be crated all day. She is a female that loves to mark. I used to take her to dog park everyday and she was the friendliest dog of all. Unfortunately I had to go into the hospital and someone was given my dog. That dumb ass took her to a home unleashed with another unleashed pit bull. Needless to say their was a fight,her first ever. Dumb ass was proud to say that Daisy kicked the dogs ass. Well dumb ass should have realized he changed Daisys life forever. I no longer can take her to the dog park as she hates female dogs now. Want to thank you for using your teqnique. She was trained because she now growls at me when times to eat. I will never allow any dog to growl at me. I put her food on the conter and using my different voice I made her sit,lay and wait for my signal. No growls. Not taking anymore crap from my dog. I too am over it. Thanks for your words of wisdom. I truly appreciate it because I will never be afraid of any dog except the Akita- lol, that lives here!!
Decided to adopt my first pup at 22 a few months ago. He's a 65 pound, 1 and a half year old pit/lab mix so you know he's smart and got endless energy. Set myself up for a tall task for sure, but i am definitely looking forward to working my buddy's mind a little more by trying these great methods! LOVE the collar grab after Cooper comes and before giving the reward, gonna be a game changer!
Love it love it… the pop to the voice is so important. The que and the grab keeps them in focus to you and not run back to what they were doing. But the methodical “go get”no matter what will be my game changer. Can’t wait for all my snow and ice to melt to complete my go get “all day”.

this is refreshing to watch when most training videos show the dog listening almost immediately. this guy's not afraid to show you that it doesn't happen instantly so you can see how to respond.
Great video. I've seen you describe the process before but this is a great, concise lesson on how to put it all together. I love Cooper too. He's like "I'm not going anywhere except where this guy with the chicken is!" Recall? You have to get him to leave you first :D

I'll be getting my doberman this summer: researched since 2016, and have been prepping since about a year ago (researched breeders and been approved by my top pick this winter). A solid recall is my top priority (along with adv. obedience + protection, with professionals), so will certainly be learning + implementing what I can from this page!
From my experience, the amount of urgency in the voice contributes sometimes to get a good recall in critical situations. Volumes sometimes beats excitement. And being short and poppy with the articulation of the command is indeed very helpful for longer distances. Shepherds commands are good examples to learn from, I figured. I experience, that trampling sometimes also helps, since I usually approach my juvenile criminal very quickly to interrupt unwanted behavior. He knows that my patience ended, when I run towards him. Sometimes though, I feel that to praise the dog for coming too early, is counterproductive. Not sure on this one yet, though. Great content, as always. Love your channel and learn a lot at the moment.

Thanks for this great instruction. It works so well. My dog Luna (black border collie) is already 3.5 years of age, but doesn’t always respond to the command “come”. But for whatever reason, these last two days she responds immediately to “come Luna”, with sharp stress on the “c”, pronounced more like a sharp k. I also like your no nonsense style of instruction

This is really good training info !! Have 4 month old rescue puppy I’m having difficulty training. She listens to me real good in home.. but moment we are outside, she have difficulty listening to me. Also she comes and take the treat and leave right away. I wish I known about the collar grabbing!! Thank you so much !! I will train with her !
I am so pleased I watched this. I have a crazy friendly dog who would go home with the first person who smiled at him so have been delaying letting him off leash. I am now on the long line and working on recall which he is getting really good at. The grab of the collar before treating is something that I will now be doing! Thanks Joel
Finally ! A dog training video wherein a dog is actually being trained so viewers can see what happens in real life and learn what to do next. (I use basically the same techniques to train my dogs. Yes, that 'grab' of the collar or to attach a leash is like sealing the deal. However I add a click with the treat...no, not with some silly clicking device but a tongue in cheek click that means I can always make the click. )
