I am sick and tired of the Capri controversy. Nothing tight is flattering. Southern summers+too old to wear shorts = CAPRI pants. If you don't like it don't wear it but stay in your lane. 😮
The capri pants topic will never go away. I’m tall, slender and have long legs. I am in my 60s and wear capris and they look very stylish on me! Please don’t lump all of us in one frumpy category!
I was young in the '50s. The photo you are showing that you call 'Capri' pants. We called them 'Toreador' pants, because the looked like the pants a Toreador (Bull Fighter), wore. Capri's were slim, not tight, pants that went to the top of our ankles. 'Peddle Pushers' came below the knees. Burmuda Shorts were long shorts that hit above the knee.
The shorter, wide leg pants were popular in the 70's, we called them gauchos. Capris are similar to pedal pushers, so called because they wouldn't get caught on anything while riding your bicycle, but if they come down to the tops of the ankles they are called cropped pants these days. Slightly looser and more casual were "clam diggers" ...Bermuda shorts are nice because they cover more leg, and I have seen shorts that come just below the knee but are fitted which look great on the right person.
I agree with you on the capri pants. I only have one pair, which I use to mow my yard in. I can't wear shorts as I have calcification in my knees. (not pretty)
Oh, I have to push back on the turtleneck… The cowl neck is out of style so that’s a good reason to leave that behind… But if you watch any of the runways and you really enjoy fashion and you think it’s great… wear it! The higher necks that are not quite tight are extremely in this season… If you enjoy trends, I say go for it! I love turtlenecks and I don’t care if I have a little bit of sagging skin around them… They are so chic at any age and I love them!
OMG! The Disney character advice could not be more on point! I literally laughed out loud. It has always been a mystery to me why any adult would say to themselves, "Hmmm, Mickey Mouse seems like a great choice today, with my matching slippers!" Great tips!
Omg! I literally thought the same thing! If you are past the age of 5, you have no business wearing a Disney sweater 😂 me and my husband call these people "mutants" 😅 like they are half human, half cartoon characters lol 😆
@@annesmith6582 That is exactly what I think! When I wear a scarf, as I often do, when it's not too warm, I usually arrange it in some sort of "cowl" too.
I love turtlenecks made from soft, thin knits and, as long as they are not chunky, too high and/or tight, they look good on me. Top tip if you love them but want to style them a bit more modern; fold them towards the inside instead of out! It makes for a very different look (and no, it doesn't look like you're wearing a mock neck). In my opinion, too much flesh on show everywhere looks frumpy, cheap and desperate at any age. It barely looks... OK... on stick thin, flat chested runway models!
I HATE wearing skirts in the Summer. I get the "Chub Rub" due to my thunder thighs. It hurts. Plus sometimes there is just too much fabric with skirts. Capris - why not just get some that suit your body!! If you are short and wide, of course capris that are baggy, a loud colour, and stop mid calf are going to make you look like a beach ball. Ones that skim your legs and stop at an attractive point on your leg can work. I live in Canada. When it is -35C, the last thing I am worring about is my neckline. Warmth, it is in short supply come January!
Agree with most clothes you mentioned I like cowl necks v flattering actually and Capri trousers fitted correctly or above ankle v nice and has to be slim fitted I'm sixty three and wear them
I have always, and will always, love turtlenecks! The tighter ones, rather than the looser ones, look great on me and as long as they continue to do so, I will wear them. I have an undercut pixie, and love earrings, so they are a perfect complement. When did this classic style fall out of favor and get so much hate????
I agree re capri pants. Elegant classy woman would never wear them. I respect ladies who love wearing them, but living for years in tropics I found them uncomfortable. They made me hot! There are better, more elegant alternatives to capri pants which you actually showed. Thinking about capri pants - they would be very practical to wear while I’m watering my green house ( live in Europe now ). My long pants are getting wet 😂😂😂
Agree in principle but please - don’t ever judge my running shorts and tank with Pirates plastered across the front while watching my 9 year old grandson play baseball at noon in July and August when it’s over a hundred degrees in the shade and 90% humidity! I’ll take criticism any day over a heat stroke!
I know the capris look frumpy but I have about 30-40 of them and I made my bed and I'm going to lie in it. At least I'm not fat. I think that makes it a bit better. I also wear turtlenecks in the winter because they are warm. Otherwise I follow all your style tips. Would never reveal too much or wear Disney anything or expose my elastic waist (all my capri pants have elastic waist--so when that wears out I will move on). I have a massive amount of earrings including some heavy ones, but they are so uncomfortable, I usually take them off before the end of the day. I embrace the frump, but appreciate the advice and tone it down some. I think that helps. You should see my handbags--you would be horrified.
It’s tough to make changes all at once. I’d go gradually with replacing the capris. Embracing our age and staying joyful and open hearted is key I think over clothing ☺️haha I’ll have to do a video on handbags soon!
I live 7 miles from Disneyland m and I go to Disneyland several times a month. Where I live, 7 out of 10 men and women are wearing something Disney. They do not age us! Disney apparel makes us look like fun people who enjoy the Disney magic.
@@SallyAtkins I agree about the capris though. When I was teaching though, I wore them for years because shorts were not acceptable, and dresses were not practical. Loose pants were not in style. In my last couple of years we were able to wear longer shorts on very hot days. I haven’t worn capris since my husband, who is so very kind and tactful, said they weren’t flattering. I’m in Southern California so I wear shorts and sleeveless tops from May-November.
I would never wear shorts that go to my knee. I would look like a box. I wear skorts or shorts. And yes, I live in SW Florida, where it is always hot and humid.
I mostly agree with your observations besides one: if you were turtle-neck sweaters in a monochrome outfit you actually create a colour-column which flatters each bodyshape and is rather stylish. I also would like to add tip no.10: no synthetics, especially polyester. They are cheap, but also look like it. They take a heavy toll on the environment (they are based on fossil oil and non-degradable) and are unpleasant on the skin. Stylish women won't ever wear those trashy fabrics. Buy less, but class!
Thank you for your truly useful advice. I could not agree more with you. Capris! I never wore them, - even years ago. In my opinion, only women with special body styles can use them without looking even shorter and larger. If a woman is tall, slender, and has great long legs and narrowish hips, - yes. Then she will not look too short. Unfortunately, women of all ages wear them and sometimes I feel as if those with tummies and chunky calves would summertime be victims of mass hypnosis. Let´s watch out for another common mistake: Modern shops offer various sizes of comfortable and supportive bras. We ought to look at our figure at least reflecting from shop windows. I did it recently and immediately understood that my bra had reached its end. These tips and thoughts are not meant to be impolite or disparaging, so why couldn´t we try to avoid the basic frumpy problems and look our nest. So should men do, too. No one needs to look like a film star.
Very good advice thank you. I’m in my eighties and like to look my best and I agree with you. I would like to complement you on you’re makeup,it’s beautiful and natural looking,
Love your videos but totally disagree with the turtle neck (I’m from the states) being frumpy! There is nothing like a sleek, not bulky, black turtle neck with a pair of nice black trousers and belt paired with great black ankle boots…classy and timeless and far from frumpy, imho. Totally agree with all the rest though… 😉
Capri pants were taken over by crops. I could not find a thing with my 34 inseam. Crops and ankles that are to short look awful. This was a bad summer. Anything in talls was sold out. I wore my hiking crops because I could not find anything else.
This!! I have lived in this particular room in hell since I was 12. Pants that are long enough-compounded by having a short torso-are a rare and coveted find. Also long sleeves that are actually long enough. Why is this so hard?
I’m tall with a 34” inseam, as soon as new season products are launched if I find one that’s good, I order right away. Waiting for sales just means I’m ultimately disappointed by no stock. Amazon has some great options, Yogipace has different styles and silhouettes with up to a 37” inseam.
I have just been watching other videos where they say that big, oversized sweaters are coming back for the fall of 2024. I agreee with you but they are coming back. Enjoyed the video.
I've been on the hunt for a basic pair of solid color pants for summer because I don't care for capris and I look awful in shorts. Every pair of pants I find has tons of spandex , cargo pockets, wide legs etc. Why don't they sell basic cotton blend straight leg pants for the hotter months????
Hate capri pants, always have! Didn't think about the earrings but now I see what you mean. I love an elasticated waist but like you say it should be covered. Love your vlogs!
Capris are not flattering. How is letting an extra four or five inches of leg stick out "cooler" than wearing a skirt or flowing pants? In any case, my favorit pants are ankle length. I think Mary Tyler Moore in "The Dick Van Dyke" show, early 60's. Side zip, flat front, ankle length, slim fit but not tight, a classic look! And yes, there is a line between being stylish and being an exhibitionist. Excellent tips!
Hey - reality check. When you are over 65, you cannot hide being old. But you can do something about looking frumpy and grumpy at any age. Aging gracefully is an art, not a science. The cheapest face lift is a smile. And underwear as outerwear is disgusting on all women of any age.
Just noticed this year that turtlenecks and even high crew necks increase the distance between the top of the tops and the sag of the boobs. V-necks shorten that distance between the neckline and the boobs that lost the gravity battle. If I have to wear a turtleneck, wearing a V-necks sweater vest or a half-buttoned shacket over the turtleneck for the same illusion. I also like to wear necklaces stacked inside the v-opening to add to the illusion. A scarf tucked inside the v-opening can also emphasize the v shape. Beware of low-hanging boobs (illusions). The same could be said about the distance between boobs and a crop top hem. The loser the hem is to the boobs, the lower they appear. Time to declutter the closet of all the boob-sag-illusion tops and dresses. ❤❤❤
I’m 59, tall and slim, have never have owned capris and never will! Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn wore them with panache but I’ve never ever seen anyone else wear them so well
I have (finally) come to see the light regarding capri pants. This summer I've been wearing full length linen trousers and they make my legs look longer and and slimmer overall. I've also been ankle length jeans and love the look. I'm never going back to capris.
I agree with all except turtlenecks. A cashmere turtleneck in a soft colour can be quite flattering on the right body type. I think crew neck sweaters are much worse, rarely complimentary on anyone. Turtlenecks keep you warm in the winter, substituting a scoop neck won't work as your upper chest is exposed which is not ideal in frigid temperatures.
