Roger I just ordered Shimona Zodias 76M can’t wait to put that thing to test ! Thanks for showing the technique that you use up front. Loading up the hook set! I like to think of it as a tiny moment of peace/zen - where time slows down and you reel & load up before setting. It is analogous to baseball where hitters can see fastballs slow down

Such Wisdom....Thank You for Sharing.....It took me 1/3 of the season to learn this! So Now I have the Opposite issue....My hooksets have gotten so good that I have issues Unhooking Fish. So Now I would love some pointers on How to use the Unhook-um Tool. An you are correct...A fish that is being pulled in from Clamped Jaws doesn't even fight....Its befuddled! But in the Wash is where they go Ape Shit....and thats when you loose em! You make using that Un Hook-um tool look so easy!

The ideal scenario is you slide that shoremat onto land before she knows wtf just happened lol...as for the unhookum tool, I don't know what else to say - the guy has a video somewhere demonstrating its usage. It's basically a lever - find the bend of the hook, push down, twist to keep it at the bend, and push/punch in the opposite direction - be careful you don't punch it through the fish's gills/stomach.

One of the challenges I face on ocean side surf is the sloping of the beach, wave size and the pressure that the water puts on a fish as the water sucks out waiting for a wave to bring the fish in. These clips appear to be more bayside or with less breaking surf and flat landing zones.

Yeah I mean you have to adjust for the length of the receding waves by giving yourself enough room to walk forwards and backwards - the key is to keep constant, even pressure on the fish, while letting the wave take it back out while you wait for the next set. You can't be standing on the edge the entire fight bc then you'll have to wade in tits deep when the water sucks out a big fluke.

@@bryanturci3876 Yup and like anything else if it's a 20" fluke you can probably get away with just surfing it in...but a big fish you have to plan ahead lol. I would set the hook and just walk back 20ft instead of pumping/reeling to give yourself room to maneuver with the waves. Kinda like flipping trees in my kayak I'll make a flip and before the bait touches bottom I've swapped my pedal drive in reverse...just in case!

This seems to be the case with many of your videos. The waves and wash seem smaller and the cuts and bars are more well defined than where I fish. I thought it was just the camera playing tricks but I was also thinking that it might be because you are fishing a non replenished beach. Or would you say both replenished and non replenished beaches have the same features?

@@ralphc7182 Honestly you just have to react to the fish and wave conditions at the moment, the important thing is using the pressure/weight of the fish (along with the load in your rod) as a guide - you want to avoid sharp increases in pressure or god forbid introducing any amount of slack, and if that means walking a wave out and then walking the next wave in then that's what you have to do. Some beaches are flatter than others, some days the waves are bigger, some days you're fishing a shallow bathtub...the only constant is how much pressure you put on the fish.

I fish all over and down LBI/IBSP the beaches are flatter for sure, and if I were spending a day down there I would cover more ground. Pay attention to any bars/dips/points that form in the sand - there's always a deeper side and I would focus on those as much as possible. But then again I've caught big fluke down there in 6" of water so they can be on top of the bars/humps too!

Just looking at the specs on paper I would opt for the 742MLFS if you're jigging - "regular" tapers from Daiwa can be a bit spongey.

Either 3-4 ft with the knot outside the rod, or 8-9 ft with the knot between the reel and stripper guide - never into the reel.

Hookset and retrieve you'll be surprised at how many fisherman make the mistake in retrieving a hooked fish. They treat the fish as though it were a shark. My method is as you explained, if the fish turns left than your rod should be opposite at three o'clock , to the right your rod is leveled at nine o'clock. i don't pop the rod i just maintain the pressure without giving any slack or ripping the fishes lip this keeps the fish hooked.

Never - it's not tuna lol! It doesn't take much to get a hook into fluke, just be sure you're in position to give it that big sweep on zero slack.

Not much different except your rod angle relative to the water's surface. The goal is to always maintain that 90 degree pull to the fish, and being more vertical on a boat if you're fishing deeper water will change the absolute rod angles but not the relative angle from your rod to the fish - hopefully that makes sense. A jig hook set is always a jig hookset - reel down your slack then across your shoulders, boat/kayak/shore it doesn't matter the physics remain the same.

@@mrhanky5555 It's hard for me to say w/o seeing your hookset in action - though any fish I miss is going to be small fish...even a 15" fluke will inhale that 6" jerk shad within a split second. I don't wait at all - feel the bite, reel down and set the hook, as you can see in the video.

12lb fluoro leader is perfect for the jigheads we use and the size of the fish - you can bump it up to 14lb but no more. Fluke are everywhere, you have to go explore.

If you're only jigging then I prefer the Labrax in 99% of situations, the Steez is just a great crossover for the hard jerkbaits that I throw a lot. But for a pure jigging rod...hard to beat that Labrax imo. Which one did you get, the 86 or 90ML?

Would you use the 7’ 6”” zodias on the kayak as well. Or with the same rod in the 7 foot be better suited? I can see the 7‘6“ being a little bit more useful with casting distance in the surf, but also I found that the jump from 7’ to 7’6” in certain rods really improves the action and sensitivity. But maybe that’s just me lol.

@@nelsonfelixoutdoors6095 If I were only fishing from the yak I would look at 7 - 7'2 rods. 7'6 can be a bit awkward esp when it comes to landing fish. But if you're looking for a rod to do double duty shore + yak, go for the 7'6 - just make sure your landing net has a decently long handle so you don't end up high sticking the rod on every fish.
